Verizon and Redbox Develop New Video Service to Battle Netflix

Verizonand RedBox develop new video service to fight with Netflix. What'stheir way to compete with Netflix? Read My article and know moreabout the battle between movie and video service providers.

AfterNetflix unveil its first original series, Verizon and Redbox aredeveloping a new video service to compete against Netflix, which willcombine Redbox's kiosk DVD and Blu-Ray rental service with streamingand downloadable video content made possible by Verizon's network.Specifics are scant at this point, but the new service seems primedto compete more directly with the once-thriving-now-strugglingNetflix: like Netflix, the Redbox-Verizon service will apparently besubscription-based, meaning customers will pay a flat fee for accessfor to both physical DVDs from Redbox machines and an online trove ofcontent available for both "on-demand streaming and download."

Thecompanies said that the joint venture will launch in the second halfof the year, and it will combine Redbox DVD and Blu-ray rentals withan on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon. The servicewill offer "subscription services and more," and it will beavailable on multiple platforms like smartphones, tablets, andtelevisions. Due to "competitive concerns," however,Verizon and Coinstar declined to provide details on exactly what theywill offer or how much it will cost, and did not take questionsduring a Monday morning conference call.Redbox has DVD kiosks insupermarkets, drug stores, and other locations nationwide. Customerscan reserve movies or games on their computers or smartphones, pickthem up from a nearby location, and return them when finished.According to an NPD survey from last month, Redbox is now the mostpopular source of DVD and Blu-ray disc rentals.

Netflixcustomers pay a flat fee for an unlimited amount of movies andtelevision shows, which they receive by mail or by streaming over theInternet; Redbox, meanwhile, has unleashed an army of DVD vendingmachines on the supermarkets and big box stores of America, offeringrentals on a pay-per-night basis. With its partnership with Verizonto bring content to the web, however, Redbox is entering Netflix'sterritory; the company's CEO Reed Hastings has reiterated many timesthat he believes streaming media, not the physical DVD, is the futureof his company. Redbox and Verizon join Amazon, Hulu, DishNetwork/Blockbuster, and the movie studios' Ultraviolet as upstartcompetitors looking to unseat Netflix in the streaming space.

Redboxhas kiosks at 29,000 locations nationwide, including grocery stores, convenience stores, drug stores, and at some Wal-Mart stores. "Byoffering instantly available online and mobile content with immediateaccess to physical media through rental kiosks, Verizon and Redboxwill be uniquely positioned to deliver the best of bothworldsdigital and physicalto consumers across the country,"the companies said. Netflix isstruggling after a shaky 2011, Verizon and Redbox will still havetheir work cut out for them. No mention of specific content was made, but Verizon said it will use its "industry-wide relationshipswith entertainment content providers" to ensure a good selectionof movies online.

A Call to End Format Wars, Boost On Demand and Untether Digital Downloads

Want to own the current Holy Grail invention of blue laser but are disappointed that no one format offers movies from all major studios? Want to watch any TV show or movie on demand but can't find enough content available? Want to buy songs in open mp3 format but can't find enough songs sold that way? You're not alone, and the industry should know their customer better.

The music, television, movie and consumer electronics industries (hereafter collectively referred to as the industry) have been struggling with the rapid advance of technology and the new virtuality of content. Here are the top eight things the industry should do to harness the technology and recapture the simple tenet of giving the customer what they want.

1. End format wars.

When a new format is needed to advance the industry to the next level, there should be one and only one format that goes to market and becomes the standard. This applies to both online virtual formats and offline physical formats.

The current example in physical formats is Blu-ray vs. HD DVD. Two formats were necessary at first to spur competition, but the differences between them at this point are so negligible that ultimately one has to win for either to succeed. A standards body needs to exist to allow competition at first and to oversee a limited beta period to ensure customer opinions are factored in, but then to ultimately pick a winner before full-scale market launch. Companies should be required to register candidate formats in the early stages. The standards body should track investment and invention level of each candidate along the way. Then a winner should be chosen with a percentage of the licensing revenue going to all of the candidates commensurate with their investment and invention level. The candidates either agree to these terms from the get-go or they do not participate in determining and profiting from the next generation format.

The current example in virtual formats is mp3 vs. AAC vs. WMA vs. yet others for audio, and mpeg-4 (H.264) vs. WMV (VC-1) vs. yet others for video. The industry should have standardized on mp3 and mpeg-4 a long time ago to ensure that all content will be universally playable on every device.

Correcting this immediately is essential. The industry should get a standards body in place as soon as possible and declare much overdue industry standards, such as Blu-ray, mp3 and mpeg-4. The marketplace will rejoice, sales will skyrocket and the floodgates will open on the dam the industry itself has been one of the largest contributors to building.

2. Offer three consumption models.

a. Offer all content free with ads.

All content should be available on demand all the time free with ads. The best examples of this so far are music videos at mtv.com and music.yahoo.com and TV shows at in2tv.aol.com. The worst examples of this are the television networks who still insist on having their content time expire after only a short period of availability. Networks should use the ad model to make their entire catalog of shows, current and past, available for free all the time. All media stores, such as iTunes, should also introduce the option of listening to or watching a brief ad per 10 minutes of content or so in order to enjoy the entire content rather than just short preview clips.

b. Rent all content without ads for a fee.

This is the same as 2a only without the ads for a fee. The best examples of this so far are Netflix and Yahoo! Music Unlimited. With the former, for as low as $8.99 per month, you can rent any movie in the store, and that now includes some that can be watched directly online. With the latter, for as low as $5.99 per month, you can listen to every song in the store as many times as you want with no ads. All media stores and sites should offer this option.

c. Sell all content Digital Rights Management(DRM, or copy protection)-free.

There will still always be a market for owning content outright, such as for those times where you just don't have an Internet connection or don't want to be tethered to a server. In these cases, for both online virtual formats and offline physical formats, DRM simply should go. It has proven to hamper sales significantly due to treating everyday paying customers as if they are pirates, restricting them to play back the content on too few devices, giving them the chore of backing up and managing licenses on their computer and violating their fair use rights. DRM will always be defeatable and the industry simply needs to stop investing an inordinate amount of time and money into something that has a negative impact on their bottom line. The industry should abandon it and get back to the basic premise of allowing the customer the joy of experiencing the content they paid for without any strings attached. The best example of this so far is EMI which is now allowing media stores to sell their songs DRM-free.

3. Wireless Internet-enable all devices.

The computer cannot be the only access point. TVs, cable boxes, disc players, DVRs, game consoles, portables, boom boxes, phones, car head units - in short all playback devices - should come with built-in wireless connection to the Internet for access to content servers. The best examples of this so far are the Playstation 3 and the iPhone/iPod touch Wi-Fi Music Store.

4. Allow playlists to be defined and stored on the servers.

What 2a and 2b do is move us away from the need to store and manage our own copies of the content on our client devices (or on our shelves). Moving playlists off of the clients is a natural extension of that. When we can dial up all content including our favorite playlists on demand all the time anywhere we have an Internet connection, the convenience of not having to permanently store and backup our own copies of the data will start to prevail. The best example of this so far is Yahoo! Music Jukebox.

5. Offer movies by the chapter in addition to whole.

Just as the norm is now to be able to buy individual songs rather than just whole albums, the same option should be available for buying the individual chapters of movies. Doing so would offer the same advantages as individual song sales - the ability to collect favorite chapters at lower cost and storage use, the ability to direct-access chapters on playback and the ability to arrange favorite chapters from various movies into playlists. Note that this would require players to pre-cache the next chapter to ensure gapless chapter-to-chapter playback, but that is certainly doable.

6. Offer a choice of bitrates.

Highly compressed bitrates were fine at first, but there is no doubt that even with today's bandwidth and storage (which will only grow with time), those who want to enjoy higher bitrates should have the option. With 2a and 2b, bandwidth is the primary factor, and clearly higher bitrates are possible even today. With 2c online formats, storage is also a factor, but even with today's capacities some may choose quality over quantity for must-have content.

7. Piggyback audio on video for physical formats.

The industry moving to a new physical format is a big undertaking. Assuming a new HD format succeeds for video, then audio should just piggyback on that success. The video format will obviously have enough capacity for audio, and consumers will not have to buy additional players. Previous HD audio attempts of DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD failed for several reasons - separate audio-only players, no single digital connection such as HDMI, format war, etc. - all of which can be avoided once either Blu-ray or HD DVD is declared the standard. Albums in uncompressed PCM, both 2-channel stereo and multi-channel surround, with HD extras such as music videos, live concert footage and still photos all played through an existing player with single HDMI connection would be very compelling. With lossless compression such as Dolby TrueHD, perhaps entire album box sets could fit on one disc. These are exciting new possibilities.

8. Leverage viral marketing.

This is an extension of 2a. Provide url-addressability to free ad-coupled content that sites anywhere can provide links to - it essentially equates to free marketing for you. It doesn't matter from where the eyeballs found the content, just that they found it. More eyeballs means more ad revenue in your pocket and more exposure that will lead to the eventual purchase of the content and related merchandise such as concert tickets, t-shirts, posters, action figures, toys, etc. A free ad-supported lure has always been necessary (radio and TV) for widespread exposure. The best examples of this so far are music videos at mtv.com and music.yahoo.com and TV shows at in2tv.aol.com. Music, movies and all TV programs should get on board and realize the massive new source of constant ad revenue never before possible without the new technology.

These eight things would take the industry out of its current slump and carry it into unprecedented growth territory.

Lets Go Beat Up Some Smokers

The American public has been so inundated with anti-smoking information that it is no longer effective and commercials are becoming more and more outrageous. According to one of the latest commercials on Spike TV the tobacco industry supplied its products to have it featured in a Muppet movie. I thought I have seen every Muppet movie ever made and for the life of me I do not remember any Muppet movie that featured a cigarette. I must have missed that one.

The war on smoking has been going on for over 40 years now and it is not going well despite the preponderance of the evidence is that cigarette smoking damages ones health over the long run. Yes millions of people have quit smoking and yet millions more have also started during the same time period.

The same production company produces another commercial that shows a knucklehead trying to purchase light bullets for his gun and one if his statements is something like "cigarette companies are labeling there cigarette with light and ultralights even though they are just as deadly as regular cigarette?". Lets see now, if I apply the same logic to air quality then if I lived in Linfen, China (dirtiest air in the world) or if I lived in Cape Grim, Tasmania (cleanest air in the world) I would still just as likely to develop respiratory problems because both have places have at least some air pollutions. Give me a break. If a tobacco company filed a law suite against that producer can you immanage the publicity that would be generated against the tobacco company? Its just not worth the effort.

Now don't get me wrong, I do not condone smoking. If you want to smoke great. If you do not want to smoke great. But if you try to force me to do either one we will then have a big problem. So why is it that this commercial producer can get away with blatantly false statements? It is because it is socially unacceptable to be a smoker. Smokers are in the minority and it is ok to beat up smokers today.

Do you know of anyone who would publicly admit to being pro smoking? Even smokers will tell you that they know it is bad for you and they are trying to quit or have tried to quit in the past but they will not admit to being pro smoking.

I do not have a problem with the anti smoking campaign but I do have a problem with the way society is allowing certain business and government practices to occur. Business have won law suites allowing them to not hire employees that smoke and to fire existing employees that do smoke. The bases if the law suite is that the health insurance cost would rise if they employee smokers. I have worked for a lot of companies over the last 40+ years and never once have I seen an insurance representative come into my company and taken a pole of how many smokers and nonsmokers were employed and then adjusted the companies insurance rate based on the results. The next time you update your resume, you may want to include references willing to vouch that you never touch tobacco.

I believe that all of the jurors on the employment issues of smokers were non smokers. Smokers were relieved from jury duty because they may be prejudice. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2004 44.5 million U.S. adults were smokers comprising 20.9 percent of the adult population so 2 of them should have been smokers. Sounds like stacking the deck to me.

I think that I should be allowed to fire all of my employees that are over 40 years of age. After all older employees will use more health care benefits than younger employees so this policy should keep my insurance rates to a minimum. While I'm at it anyone with a higher than 12 percent body fat is gone. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 1989 that Obese people cost 51.5 billion in health care costs per year.

Here is an interesting fact. The Department of Public Health, Netherlands reported in 1997 that smokers have more diseases that nonsmokers but nonsmokers live longer and can incur more health costs at advanced ages. For a given age, smokers can cost 40 percent more in health care cost than nonsmokers and if all smokers quit today health care costs would be lower at first but after 15 years they would be higher than at present. That does it I'm going to fire everyone over 40.

Why does society allow this type of injustice happen? Because you as an individual do nothing. To paraphrase a popular saying; for injustice to occur all that is needed is for good people to do nothing. If it is ok with you that smokers are being punished for there actions then do not complain when it is your turn.

A comparative study between the Last Airbender TV series and the movie

People who have enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes also will go to watch the last airbender 3d and last 2009 movie, so they can note a considerable difference between this animation movie. So here i think for write an article, in which i m gonna discuss Some of the aspects which have not been included in The Last airbender movie.

Avatar: The Last Airbenderhas been shown as both an anime series and as a movie. But people whohave watched Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes can note aconsiderable difference between the cartoon and the movie. Some of theaspects which have not been included in the movie have been discussedin this article.

Tostart with, the movie does not give a detailed description of the warbut just tries to explain it through scrolling titles. On the contrary, the anime series shows the great war in the introduction although onlyfor a few seconds. The portrayal of the war is necessary to explain thenecessity of an Avatar.

But in their hunt for Avatar: the LastAirbender episodes, thousands of fans have come across numerousentertainment portals providing free download services. At firstglance, they look quite lucrative and users generally do not give evena second thought before clicking on the directed links for Avatar: theLast Airbender download. As a result, they get trapped in these baitsand pay heavy price for those so called free downloads. If you want toact smart and use an authentic source for Avatar: the Last Airbenderdownload, go for subscription websites.

Secondly, those whowatch Avatar: The Last Airbender online might know that the aftermathsof the war are better portrayed in the series than in the movie. In theanime series, Sokka tries to retain his status as the last man in theSouthern Water Tribe and he has been shown building his own army andutilizing Fire Nation for defense. But in the movie Sokka and Katara donot try to defend themselves when Fire Nation arrives in the village. On the contrary, they are seen engrossed in discussing about theirlong-lost parents.

Another important aspect noted by those whowatch Avatar: The Last Airbender is that the anime series boasts ofside characters like Jet who have no place in the movie. However, itsobvious that such side characters cant be included in a two hour film. The film also contains fewer moments of humor as compared to theseries. In fact, only two funny moments can be seen in the film. Thesemoments are related to Sokka and Water. On the other hand, humor isfinely blended in the anime series. Even Aang is quite humorous alongwith other slapstick characters.

The film does not includeSuki and Kyoshi warriors, who play an important role in the series. Infact the war against Fire Nation is incomplete without the inclusion ofthese warriors. In Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes, the courtshipbetween Sokka and Princess Yue lasts for three episodes and progressesat a very slow pace. In the film, the viewers instantly come to knowabout their relationship and Yues departure is also quick. This showsthat their relationship has not been given enough screen space todevelop in the movie.

The most touching omission in the filmis that of Appa and Momo. Those who watch Avatar: The Last Airbenderonline find their characters very endearing. These characters havealways worked their magic on the fans. But, considering the totallength of the movie, it is very difficult for the creators to includeall the characters. Overall the movie was great, but fans of animeseries cant help comparing it with the series and finding flaws in it.

Believe In Yourself And Become a Winner: Lessons from Hollywood

A while ago I made it a point to watch the movie "Legally Blonde."

Not just for the bright, chirpy and eminently watchable Reese Witherspoon, but also because I loved the message it sent out.

If you didn't see the movie, all you need to know is that it's about a smart, fashion-conscious blonde who's told time and again, by her family and friends, that it'simpossible for someone like her to go to Harvard law school.

That she's just not smart enough and doesn't have what it takes.

In the movie, the character played by Witherspoon not only goes to Harvard law, but also through sheer determination and intuition, graduates at the top of her class.

Its just the sort of movie people love. Because it makes us believe that we too are capable of achieving anything we want to.

It reminds us how we often let ourselves, and others, underestimate our own potential.

And how we undermine our own sense of self, because of what we look like or where we came from.

But why just let it remain a movie, when it can be the story of your life...

Have you ever asked yourself what it is that keeps you from reaching your full potential?

From doing what you are inherently capable of?

For many of us, it's a lack of belief in ourselves. A lack of confidence in our own ability to succeed.

And because we believe we will fail, we usually do.

But there are people who have succeeded beyond all expectation - no matter what they look like, or where they come from.

One of my favourite role models who comes to mind is another Hollywood celebrity, Barbra Streisand.

Indeed, one of my favourite films of all time is her movie, "Yentl," about a courageous, intelligent woman trying to fulfill her capabilities, in the face of overwhelming odds.

"Yentl" was also the movie in which Streisand became the first woman ever to produce, direct, write and star in a major motion picture.

Streisand carved her own path, and broke the mould.

She showed how a woman with unconventional looks can make it in a field where beauty is more important than brains.

So, if you believe that you are less than someone, because of your lack of education, looks, talent, background or ability, take courage from her achievements.

They are an inspiration not only for women, but for everyone.

Because all it take is a belief. The belief that you can do what it takes.

Don't wait for someone else to give you an opportunity to prove yourself. Stop depending on others for handouts.

Don't wait for the right opportunity to fall in your lap. Because it never will.

All you need to carve your own path, is the confidence and the belief that you can succeed at anything you set out to do, no matter what the odds.

So start today. Choose a mentor.

Learn from the masters. Re-invent yourself.

Create your own opportunities and forge your own future.

Your belief in yourself, coupled with the courage to see it through, is what will carry you from a life of mediocrity and under-achievement, into a world where you can be the winner you aspire to be.

Sitara Telugu Movie Review Rating

Release date : December 04, 2015

AuthorRating : 2.25/5

Director : Surendra GL

Producer : Ravi Kumar Ds

Music Director : Ghantadi Krishna, Ram Paidisetty

Starring : Ravi Babu, Ravneet Kaur, Ashwin, Suman

Continuing with the trend of small budget films, the latest one to join the list is Sitara. Starring Ravi Babu in a pivotal role, this movie has hit the screens today. Let’s now see how the movie turns out to be.

Story:

Raghuram (Ravi Babu) is a popular director who is planning a movie with all the newcomers. In the process, he falls on Sitara (Ravaneeth Kour) and believes it would be ideal and selects.During filming, Raghuram falls for Sitara but his bad luck, Sitara falls in love with the hero (Ashwin). Knowing this, a jealous Raghuram starts behaving horribly with her.Twist in the tale arises when Sitara is killed on the set of questionable manner. Did she get killed or committed suicide? Raghuram is involved in this? Which forms the rest of the story.

Plus points:

The concept of the filmis enjoyable. First 15-20 minutes of the film are very engaging. Screenplay featuring two parallel stories is the main highlight of the film. The highest point is not bad. Ravi Babu is an asset for the film with his versatile play. It was popular in his party.
Ravaneeth Kour seems glamorous and provides the necessary oomph factor. Krishna Bhagavan provides plenty of entertainment with its blows comedy and Chitram Srinu also tries to evoke few laughs.

negative points:

Management is the major drawback of this film. There were plenty of opportunities to make this film as an engaging thriller, but the director has failed in its execution. Even if the script is good, the film is fairly predictable after 15 to 20 minutes. There are so many unnecessary scenes that come in the middle of the film. Except Ravi Babu character, every other character lacks depth. All the songs in the film becomes speed breakers for the procedure.

Technical aspects :

Cinematography is decent and the shots are beautifully captured. The manager lacks clarity in its execution and failed to make the necessary emotions in most scenes. The history of revelation with another film and ending with three other films are good.
Coming to the music, not even a song is good, but the background score is not bad. editing Nandamuri Hari is very dull. Production values looks good.

verdict:

Overall, Sitara lack of depth in the story and completely deviates from its plot with many unnecessary scenes. The only points of thanks for the film are Ravi Babu game, first 15 minutes and some comedy scenes. Except these, there is not much in this movie. Watching when the DVD came out.

Gustav Klimt and the Power of Danae

When watching the 2010 Hollywood movie "Clash of the Titans", masterworks in the world of art are not the first thing that comes to mind, at least not the visual arts. Yet the story has its roots in a story that has inspired artists for centuries. The story about the daughter of the king of Argos and Eurydice who was foretold that he would be killed by his daughters son and subsequently locked her a tower of bronze.

Here she was visited by Zeus, in the form of a shower of gold, who thus impregnated her, leading to the birth of Perseus. The king threw them both into the ocean in a wooden box, but they were rescued and thus begin the epic movie about the legend of Perseus.

Except that for most artists, the best part of the story is already over. The slaying of medusa, the travel to the underworld, the rescue of Andromeda and such are all well and good, but for the true artist, another part of the story carries much more interest, namely the impregnation of Danae by the shower of gold.
This part, which The Clash of the Titan actually ignores instead placing Zeus human shape in bed with Danae, has been the subject of numerous artistic depictions. From the artists of antiquity to Titus, Rembrandt and Klimt, Danae has been depicted on numerous occasions as she receives the shower of gold. Titus alone painted four versions. But what is it that strikes a chord with artist in this story. What is it that makes it so appealing to portray this particular scene?

There is of course the duality. Did Danae know about the shower of gold and what it would do? Did she enjoy this contact with the god or did she shun it? Was there any love involved? Titus e.g. has Eros included in one of his depictions, while in the work of Klimt, there is little done to hide her sexual ecstasy. Still, we are dealing with forbidden love and feelings, of going against the wishes of her father and of giving herself away. There is a loss of innocence in the scene, of letting go and maybe dealing with the consequences afterwards that many an artist finds fascinating. It is partly an expression of the hooker - Madonna complex as the virgin is turned.

At the same time, there are also strict parallels to another virgin who was impregnated by a god many years later. And while the church certainly did not in the mid-twentieth century allow the graphic depiction of that scene, Danae was still fair game. As such, some depictions of the scene do allude to that other later event, creating a somewhat ambivalent expression.

The re-emergence of interest in the classic arts and legends during the renaissance also contributed. With this re-emergence came the legends and heroes of old. Gustav Klimt also had a well established love for Greek myths and portrayed not only Danae but also Pallas Athene herself.

However, in the end, with all the other legends of Perseus and his exploits taken into accounts, why is it Danae that we see time and time again? Could it be down to the basics of a beautiful young woman, seduced and/or taken by a man she is not supposed to see, and potentially being a willing participant in this act? While other parts of the story deals with the fantastic, the basic principles here are the mainstays of human nature, of love and lust, innocence and betrayal. These immortal characteristics have always driven men and inspired artists and in Danae they found their muse.

Bootleg Movie Downloads

Bootleg movie downloads are a major scourge in the world of entertainment and are an offshoot of the digital makeover associated with the movie industry.

Bootleg movie downloads are a major scourge in the world of entertainment and are an offshoot of the digital makeover associated with the movie industry. One of the disturbing facts is that it has generated lucrative, novel businesses including movie DVDs and downloadable music. In other words, digital technology has opened up an unknown scope for bootlegging by unscrupulous players in the field.

The harm that has been done by bootleg movie downloads is unprecedented. Records indicate that disc and tape forgery accounts for a sizeable loss in revenue. An area of grave concern is that illegal copies of movies are flooding the internet. Bootleg downloads have hit the entertainment industry hard. It has encouraged commercial piracy to a great extent, and it has come as a great blow to creative ideas and views.

The United States entertainment industry is worried that there has been a steady growth of disc bootlegging. The ambiguous system that facilitates entry of bootleg movies to the market is complex. It is lucrative as well. Commercial pirates earn huge amounts through this nepharious process. In the absence of strict laws, the risk involved is minimal allowing bootleggers to pocket thousands of dollars a week.

Bootlegged movies move globally with the aid of an intricate and surreptitious channe1. First, a movie is clandestinely recorded with a camcorder while up for public viewing in a theater. The recording is then transferred to a computer and placed online, The master copy is handed over to a manufacturer either in the form of a DVD or electronically. The manufacturer makes copies from the discs that are made available for a fee to a network of distributors. These distributors sell them to teams of peddlers.

The Expendables, with nearly every major action star fromthe 1980s and 1990s appearing, was 20 years in the making. This is the moviethat every fan of the genre has been awaiting. And it delivers in an orgy ofviolence and nostalgia. You must watch The Expendables online for free.

How do you even begin to describe a movie of this magnitude?Ill start with something that still resonates in my head the total, uninhibited applause of the theatre crowd as each of the actors names appearedin the opening credits. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, BruceWillis, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke,Randy Couture, Stone Cold Steve Austin, David Zayas. These are the Olympiansof what was arguably the golden age of Action/Adventure films. And to have themall in the same movie is almost unimaginable.

Of course if all these actors were still in their primes, their $20 million per picture salaries would have made this movie impossible. But just because they are all past their primes doesnt mean they cant stillkick butt. This movie is thrilling partly due to these movie icons still beingbad-asses.

SylvesterStallone, who co-wrote the screenplay, plays Barney Ross, the leader of a groupof mercenaries who call themselves The Expendables. Rosss group gets called todo the jobs no one else will do. The members have wide ranging skills, and aremade up of a knife specialist (Lee Christmas, played by Jason Statham) amartial artist (Ying Yang, played by Jett Li), a big gun expert (GunnarJensen played by Dolph Lundgren), a demolition expert (Toll Road played by RandyCouture) and another gun expert (Hale Caesar played by Terry Crews). Thegroup receives their assignments via their handler, Tool (played by MickeyRourke).

The audience gets introduced to The Expendables as theycomplete their current assignment. They board a boat where rebels are about tokill hostages. Though they are hopelessly outnumbered, the mercenaries displaytheir killing skills and ultra cool manner under pressure as theysystematically kill every rebel onboard. Among the imaginative kills is onecase where the enemy has his upper body decapitated, but his legs are stillstanding. This first sequence is all you need to see to know what the rest ofthe movie will hold.

Quickly we get into the main storyline. The CIA approaches TheExpendables to do a particularly nasty job.. to overthrow a maniacal SouthAmerican General named Garza (played by David Zayas). Garza is a drug lord andmurderer in a fictitious country called Vilena. When Ross and Christmas go toVilena to do some reconnaissance they meet a local female freedom fighter namedSandra (played by Giselle Itie). Sandra tells Ross that General Garza is just afigure head, and that the person really responsible for all the atrocities isex-CIA guy James Monroe (brilliantly played by Eric Roberts) and his right-handmen Dan Paine (a beefed-up Stone Cold Steve Austin) and The Brit (GaryDaniels). Shortly after their meeting with Sandra things go awry, and Ross andChristmas are forced to flee the country in a hail of gunfire and explosions.Sandra is captured before she can escape.

With the knowledge that Sandra is facing certain torture anddeath, Ross gathers the rest of his mercenary group to go back into Vilena totry to save Sandra and defeat Garza and Monroe.

The action scenes in this movie are exhilarating andconstant. There are tons of gunfire and explosions. I was most impressed by allthe exhausting hand-to-hand combat, especially by Jason Statham and Stone ColdSteve Austin. They are machines.

Sylvester Stallone is fantastic and a marvel at age 64. Hisphysical presence and energy are those of a much younger man. And though he isthe star of the movie, he gives much screen time to the other actors, especially Jason Statham. In fact this role sets up Statham to star in manymore action flicks.

The 2 best performances though belong to Mickey Rourke and EricRoberts.

Rourke plays the long-time mercenary turned overseer as asort of wise old sage. He is clearly tired and worn out from many years offighting and killing. There is one standout scene in particular where he givesa soliloquy about his life to Ross. This is another high point in the resurrection of Rourkescareer.

Eric Roberts is known for intense supporting roles, and heis superb as the disgraced CIA operative who is really pulling the politicalstrings of the tyrannical General.

Finally, the scene that everyone has been talking about .the one where the Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willisshare the screen for the first and only time in history is awesome!. They are the 3 Mount Rushmore figures of 1980s action movies, and to see theminteracting in the same scene is unbelievable.

The Expendables is not only a great action movie, buthistoric in what it delivers. Supposedly Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagalwere also offered roles in this film but turned them down. That was definitelytheir loss.

A Review of Blade Runner and Other Sci-Fi Favorites

When watching Blade Runner you should try not to compare the movie with the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Thats a book written by the best science fiction writer of all time, Philip K. Dick.

The mechanical pets are absent but there is a monologue discussing the absence of real animals in the future in the movie. I agree that the ending is quite different but this is necessary because of the different time and character development. It should be pointed out that Blade Runner features fine casting, good special effects and has a complex storyline and premise. All these aspects of the movie justice to Dock's writing style and genius mind. Rachel played by the stunning Hollywood actress Sean Young fits perfectly in her stoic replicant/human role. Another famous actor taking part in the movie is Harrison Ford who with his smoky voice is a hunter seeking out the hiding replicants. The interesting role of Pris, a replicant ballerina, is played by Daryll Hannah. With amazing make up and costuming she gives a special touch to the movie. The soundtrack of the film couldn't be better, it is utterly scintillating. It is a wonderful compilation of wailing wet sounds of the sax, drums and consistently expresses in Blues and Jazz which are romantic and surreal. This soundtrack relieves the epic, daunting and depressing bleakness of the reality of the future, just as the famous author Philip K. Dick has depicted it. The movie is frequently categorized in the cyberpunk genre-set. The main reason for this is because the action takes place in 2019 Los Angelis. There are cyber technology of cloning, hyped-up surveillance tools, and advanced investigative strategies. The latter are carried out by the Harrison Ford character, blade Runner Deckard. The director of this masterpiece is none other than Ridley Scott. He will always be remembered with such films as Andromeda Strain and blockbusters as Thelma and Louise and Gladiators. The movie is visually dark and you can even physically feel the darkness and the depression. The premise is true to the novel. The main plot is to show how precious human being and other life creatures are versus the technological displacement we face. Usually I would suggest you to read the book and then watch the movie but I retrain from offering you that as far as Blade Runner is concerned. As the comparison you will be making is going to interfere with your experience of this marvellous SF movie then don't read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep first. Watch the film, one of the best of all times, and then read the book. After watching Blade Runner you will be flabbergasted at the details of the future life, mentality and morality.

The Wizard Of Oz: The Wizard Of Oz In Film Prior To 1939

This article was originally published in the movie blog Movie Fanfare.com by Gary Cahall. You can find the original article here.

They were the most popular children's books around, with kids eagerly awaiting the release of each new title in the series. Dismissed by many educators and critics as "junk literature" and catching the ire of religious leaders for fostering an interest in magic and fantasy, the writer behind them was nonetheless adored by fans of all ages around the globe. With all this popularity, it was inevitable that some enterprising producer would consider shooting a live-action film version.

Think I'm talking about Harry Potter? (If so, you didn't read the headline too closely.) No, this all happened about a century ago, and the author in question was L. Frank Baum, creator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, who would eventually go J.K. Rowling one better and make his own silent Oz movies. With next week's 70th anniversary video re-release of MGM's The Wizzard of Oz in mind, let's take a look at the cinematic history of Oz, one that began long before Judy Garland donned a pair of ruby slippers--which, by the way, were silver in Baum's novel. MGM thought red would look better in Technicolor.

The very first glimpse of Oz in motion picture form came in 1908, just eight years after the first book's debut. Baum himself penned and financed a stage show entitled "Fairylogue and Radio-Plays," which mixed a live lecture by him, a slide show, and brief silent film vignettes based on four of his books and featuring a cast of mostly children. The production enjoyed a brief run on the New York stage, but its ultimate failure (which contributed to Baum's bankruptcy in 1911) allowed the Selig Polyscope Company, makers of the movie segments, to step in and produce four Oz short films without the author's participation.

Of the four, only 1910's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is known to still exist. The 13-minute story borrows from both Baum's book and a contemporary Broadway adaptation, the latter of which explains the lines of chorus girls and actors in animal costumes. In it, Dorothy and the Scarecrow are both (!) in Kansas, until a cyclone sends them, Toto, and a cow and mule to the Land of Oz. Searching for the Wizard, the group is joined by the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger, and they clash with the wicked Momba the Witch, whom Dorothy manages to "liquidate" and thus free the kingdom. It's an interesting, albeit creaky, curio that gives a peek at how stage shows looked at the turn of the last century.

By 1914, Baum had moved to Hollywood, California, just as the movie industry was getting established there, and decided the time was right to set up his own movie production company to bring his visions to on-screen life. Forming the Oz Film Manufacturing Company and serving as its president (but, wisely, not investing his own funds this time), Baum would script three feature-length films based on his works. The movies were well-made and boasted impressive special effects for their time, but ultimately failed to find much audience interest with either children or adults. The first, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, was relatively faithful to its namesake book and offered a lively performance by French acrobat Pierre Coudrec in the title role of Scraps, a human-size doll who comes to life and helps a Munchkin boy named Ojo and his uncle reach the Emerald City. Released in late 1914, Patchwork 's lack of box office success ultimately doomed the comapny's subsequent entries, The Magic Cloak of Oz (based on the non-Oz tale Queen Zixi of Ix) and His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz (which would finally get a limited release in 1917).

ollowing the demise of the Oz Film Manufacuting Company, Baum continued to write until his death in 1919. The books' publishers hired Philadelphia-born Ruth Plumly Thompson to carry on with new stories in the series beginning in 1921, but the movie industry stayed away from the fantasyland for several years, until slapstick comic Larry Semon would direct, co-script (with Baum's son Frank J.), and star in 1925's The Wizard of Oz. Once again straying from the original text, this version also starred Dorothy Dwan (who would eventually become Mrs. Semon) as a rather nubile Dorothy who is wooed by a pair of rival farmhands, played by Semon and a pre-Laurel Oliver Hardy. A tornado arrives to sweep the trio and Dorothy's Uncle Henry (plus a stereotypic black worker, who in surviving prints is named either Rastus or Snowball) up and into Oz, where it's learned that Dwan is actually the country's long-lost princess and rightful ruler. The Wizard is a royal court magician, there's not a wicked witch to be seen, and Semon, Hardy and the black farmhand disguise themselves as a scarecrow, tin man and lion, respectively, to avoid capture. Semon's very loose adaptation failed at the box office (notice a pattern here?), and is of interest today only for a glimpse of Ollie before Stan.

Aside from a long-missing 1932 short based on the second Baum book, The Land of Oz, the only other pre-1939 cinema release of note was a 1933 animated cartoon, The Wizard of Oz. It covers part of the familiar story (Dorothy and Toto travel via twister, meet the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman, and visit the Wizard, who shows them some magic tricks) , but the interesting concept here is that the Kansas scenes are in black-and-white, with everything turning to color once Dorothy arrives in Oz. Could this independently-made cartoon have been what inspired MGM to use the same trick for their own film six years later?

In summation, the road to big-screen life for the residents of Oz in the 38 years since Baum's "American fairy tale" first saw print was just as perilous as Dorothy and her friends' trip down the Yellow Brick Road, filled with several detours from the source material and a surprising lack of financial success. While it was considered Hollywood's premier film studio at the time, MGM certainly had its work cut for it when, in 1938, it announced plans to turn The Wizard of Oz into a big-budget, Technicolor musical. That film's final outcome, and cinematic depictions of life in the Emerald City since then, will be discussed next week.

John Travolta - Why Danny Zukos Car And My Wiper Blades Will Never Go Out Of Style

My passion for classic cars started during childhood after seeing one of my favorite movies, Grease. This article breaks down a few ideas that I pulled from the classic movie, both for the vehicle that I drove as well as some cool clothing ideas that I have sported over the years.

Go Grease Lightning, Go grease Lightning! Such a classic tune etched in the back of my brain. Ill never forget watching the race footage when John Travoltas white classic stainless steel steed launched over the water gap down in that Southern California sewer ditch, leaving Danny Zuko the winner. Also helping out with the whole situation was Sandra D. Every classic car should come with a woman like that.

By the age of 15, I was already gearing up to buy my first car, and it had to be a classic. I would rather own something that I understood under the hood than something that is smarter than me. I was scouring papers and the web and found great listings for Mustangs. Many were listed in our local Recycler. So the choice vehicle I went for was a 65 Mustang. They have such a classic and clean look to them and they look super impressive while rolling down the street.

This was a pretty impressive rig to own at the age of 16. I remember lots of heads turning when I used to park that beast in the student parking lot. One funny thing we used to do was we would point the wiper blades and water release vents out away from the windshields. So when the wiper fluid was turned on, the water would shoot out and hit any car or person to the side of the car. Im not sure if this was easily done to Mustang wiper parts or if it was just a special trick that we could do with some of those older cars, but it sure surprised quite a few when they would get sprayed.

So along with my pimped out 65 Ford Mustang, I kind of liked the whole greaser look that the T-Birds had. I had to go out and get a leather jacket. I found one at a thrift store, and along with a couple pairs of blue jeans, I was there. Pretty much a blast from the past. Its pretty funny how fashions come back around in circles. Perhaps fanny packs and slap bracelets will be the next fad along with Iroc Camaros and white Jeeps and every school. And maybe the fashions can really be connected to each popular movie that comes out. So Dont tell Mom the Babysitters Dead and Clueless can be blamed for such sweet fashions that will be coming back in the future.

I only wish that I decided to keep that 65 Mustang. Those classic cars will never go out of style. I have seen many of the new re-issues, the new PT Cruiser and the new Dodge Challenger. Theyre very nostalgic and are new solutions. But the real deal lives in the old steel. Road rage is best in an old classic.. just kidding :) But Im sure many of us have thought from time to time how nice it would be to have an old clunker to teach a lazy driver a thing or two out there on the road. And the ease of being able to work under their hoods is so missed nowadays.

I have convinced myself enough to jump back online and search for one of those classic Stangs. I bet they go for more money now, but they are totally worth the investment.

As such if looked upon in India, there are a lot many takersfor entertainment through movies and other stuff. Though the craze has alwaysbeen evenly spread across the colorful nation, there is something peculiarlygrave about the kind of fan following that is accorded to stars of the south. This fact can also be substantiated by the fact that all major moviesproductions are based in South India. Having said that there is also a kind offeeling in south Indian fans with respect to their stars and all and the spacemovie stars occupy in the minds of people in the south is something truly outof this world.

Though the trend actually started under the shade ofBollywood, it has actually grown out into a new identity and has a niche of itsown. The fact that much more films are made in south than anywhere else justgoes on to show the perplexity of the common man. The films normally producedare protagonist centric but the scripts have become more meaningful over theyears. There is also a heavy inclination in favor of the male actor and he isthe one able to garner all the sympathy of the audience.

The audience actually decides by and large as to how aproduct is presented to them. The case with movies in south is no different. The audience treats their heroes and heroines as god like and even temples aremade for them. Seeing the nature and proclivity of the audience the wholeindustry tries to make films to actually suit and meet the needs of theaudience in letter and spirit. In fact they have indeed been successful indoing the same year after year.

The budget of films range from small to big and in manycases surpassed the budget of Bollywood. In fact the costliest stars hail fromsouth Indian Films. Many a heroines like Deepika Padukone and others havestarted their career in the south Indian Industry and have gone great guns too.The whole aspect and way to look at the industry is actually undergoing a newchange. There are large investments from people not afraid to take that extrarisk. It has been a new trend in the movie industry to incorporate freshnessthat would actually appeal to the audience. In the process to do the same a lotof directors and producers have started exploring a plethora of options thesedays.

The use of modern technology these days is also shaping asto how the film is presented to the user. A lot of new animation techniqueshave actually made a huge difference to how a film is produced. As the audiencebecomes more cynic towards better quality and substance the producers of thefilm have started to respond to the changing demand accordingly though thebasics of the ever changing game remain the same.

As we get into 2013, get set to be interested with an exciting mix of sequels and remakes like "Competition 2", "Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2", "Himmatwala" and "Chashme Buddoor". Film lovers looking for 'hatke' movies won't get frustrated either as there's lot in shop for them too.
There is so little consistently brilliant creative association in our cinema that we must celebrate the ones that always overreach -- and always deliver. The Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar duo remains one of the most exciting partnerships in contemporary cinema, between our finest, most filmic composer and our cleverest, fabulous poet as they make no mistake, their latest for Bhardwaj's upcoming Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola trailer has as saucy soundtrack as we dare expect. He is back with his crazy quirky comedy.
Vishal Bhardwaj drives desi all over again with 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', set in Haryana. The songs are absolutely in synchronize with the film's establishing, seems to be promising. His old affiliate Gulzar has trapped nine numbers for the soundtrack, moreover to two reprise versions. Overall, it is the desi taste that strategies the roost in the Bollywood songs of this movie. There are a few drawbacks, but most of the sound effects are in combination with the film's establishing and will be relished by the listeners.
I'm of the tribe that faiths Bhardwaj as a great singer, a heart touching crooner who makes great verse even more magical, and he works his mellow, emotionally-laden voice perfectly here too. It is a haunting song, with Gulzar's words desirously sad and celebrating love all at once, saying that whatever it may be, it isn't for nothing. All the songs are simply aweful and its for sure that will enjoy all the tracks. The heading melody is just perfect. The song which had already got me hooked with its appearance in the trailer will make you dance guaranteed. With addictive beats and an even more addictive tune and loop, Sukhwinder Singh is just the apt choice for this song. Though the song has a heavy VB hangover, you still cant help but dance to this lovely number.
The story line is set in the rural surroundings of a village in Haryana, This creation of Bhardwaj is a comedy-drama about Harry Mandola a character played by Pankaj Kapoor, a wealthy industrialist who loves his drink, his daughter Bijlee i.e. Anushka Sharma and the unusual bond they both share with Harry's man Friday, Matru a role played by Imran Khan. Much to her father's delight, Bijlee is all set to marry Baadal (Aarya Babbar), the son of a powerful politician Chaudhari Devi (Shabana Aazmi). This coalition which is far from just being a simple union of two young people becomes the seed for a story that brings twists and turns in the lives of Matru, Bijlee and Mandola.
Now let us hope that this movie proves to be a blockbuster and definitely if the songs and the trailer are so catchy then full show will be more enjoying and entertaining.

Bad Movie Review - Cool as Ice

If ever there was a film deserving of the infamy of being included in a bad movie night, it is Cool as Ice. This portrait of the early nineties was Vanilla Ices first and only starring role, and its about as good as you would expect. The nonsensical tagline to the film, "How do you melt a heart of stone? Just add Ice" pretty much says it all. Of course, it arrived 2 minutes after Vanillas 15 minutes were over, so it has languished on video for years, and is now developing into something of a cult hit for those who can appreciate how funny awesomely bad movies can be.

One interesting note of trivia: This is the first film for cinematographer Janus Kaminski, whose later credits include no less than Schindlers List. Wow. I guess we really do all have to start somewhere. On the other hand, this film effectively killed the career of director David Kellog, who waited 10 years for the laughter to die down before directing the probably equally terrible Inspector Gadget. Whoops.

Vanilla plays Johnny, leader of a super tough posse of biker rappers, who apparently go from town to town performing in warehouses where the lights hang at about knee level. This particular gang is so tough, that they dont even need helmets. Though, come to think of it, massive head trauma might actually explain a lot.

On the way to their next gig, or wherever it is theyre actually going, the gang encounters the horseback riding heart of stone that Vanilla desires to melt with his, um, Ice. Of course it belongs to an uptight overachiever named Kathy, who clearly needs a little Vanilla in her life to spice things up. (I made that one up myself). Ice starts by nearly killing her with her own horse, which is about the most extreme pickup technique Ive ever seen, and strangely enough, seems to work. Sure, she acts all annoyed and storms off, but as Vanilla notes:"Yup. Yup. She likes me". Its probably because shes sick of her possessive, walking clich of a boyfriend Rick.

One of the gang has some mechanical failure on the way into town, so the posse ends up stuck at a hippy-trippy bike repair shop, run by some crazy old couple. Thankfully, they run the shop out of their house, which is oh so conveniently down the street from the perpetually smoky residence of Kathy and her parents.

Oh, and did I mention that her parents are in the witness protection program, and on the run from two thugs who apparently have nothing better to do than sit around and wait for Kathys dad to appear on TV so they can track him down and extort money from him? It seems papa Kathy played by Michael Gross in what was undoubtedly not a highlight of his career was a cop who saw too much and ratted out some of his colleagues, who vowed revenge. Its really no wonder this guy left the force; he is without a doubt the worst cop in the history of law enforcement. His every instinct is completely wrong. He doesnt get anything right, or figure anything out throughout the entire film. I guess thats what he gets for trying to suppress his daughters desire to Iceify her stony heart.

But at least Vanilla is cool right? His wardrobe alone is truly something to behold, (I wonder where he keeps all those clothes on his bike?) along with his strangely erect hair, and I think any film that includes a dead-serious Vanilla Ice spewing such lines as "Yo Kat. Some words of wisdom: Drop that zero and get with the hero" at least deserves a look. And I havent even mentioned the scene where Vanilla single-handedly kicks the crap out of no less than five armed jocks who make the foolish mistake of messing with his homeboys bike. He is equally delicate in his melting of Kathys heart, which basically consists of him walking around with no shirt on, talking about how "if youre living life for someone else, you aint living", and generally acting creepy and/or criminal. This is really just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more priceless moments of unintentional hilarity to discover.

So why is this movie the pinnacle of bad-movie night cinema? It is because it is so clear that Vanilla and those involved in creating this film took it very, very seriously. This only accentuates further the laughable dialog, the ridiculous plot and the clichd characters. Somehow the thought that someone actually thought this pile was going to be good makes it all the more unintentionally hilarious.

Finding this film on VHS on Ebay is about the only way youre going to be able to purchase it, though you can often still find it for rent at your local independent video store. Watch it with a group of friends while consuming your alcoholic beverage of choice.
