5 Secret Techniques to Writing a Killer Script!

Writing is not easy, especially writing screenplays. In fact, in order to get good, I recommend that you write as often as possible. I see too many screenwriters starting out with false expectations. They think that they will sit down and on their first past write a great film. In my experience, great films come from screenwriters who have not only written material many times before but their best works come from a number of rewrites.

I advise that if you want to be a great filmmaker then you should learn how to be a great writer. The filmmaker is the visual storyteller of the script. The problem is that in our era writing good scripts, especially on the indie level, is not taken seriously enough. Most aspiring filmmakers strive to mimic Hollywood blockbusters. So they not only copy ideas from Hollywood, which are usually bad and done by committee, but in doing so they fail to perfect their craft and find their own voice as a writer.

Here are 5 Secrets that I find common in really good scripts. Of course, these are not the end all be all secrets on this subject matter because it is so lengthy it would take publishing several books to cover the ins and outs of screenwriting. 1. Have a great inciting incident. The is the motivation for things to happen. It gets things moving and provides context for the rest of the film. This doesn’t have to be action packed but it does grip the reader or audience right away. It is the key element that will propel your protagonist and antagonist into action.

2. Make every page a cliffhanger or a page-turner. Now, I am exaggerating a bit, but a good screenplay should leave the reader on the edge of his or her seat. This means you should structure your scenes in such a way that not only keeps them guessing as to what happens next but creates a burning desire to want to know what happens in the next scene.

3. Tell your story visually. Too often writers try to explain everything through exposition. Instead, use symbolism and imagery to convey the meanings you are trying to communicate to the audience. Remember the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well, try trimming down your dialogue and include more visual expression. 4. A really good script typically has a great and complex villain. In fact, the best films are the ones that have an antagonist that you love to hate. But you shouldn’t forget that their motivation for being the way they are shouldn’t be trivial. Too many films suffer from poorly written villains whose motives were unclear.

5. Have your protagonist be imperfect. In fact, the characters that are written the best are usually those fighting with inner demons. This forces them to go through some type of character arc which, when dealt with, gives them the strength to confront and be victorious over the antagonist.

Bonus Tip: Try telling your story in a nonlinear fashion. The problem I have with a lot of the films that Hollywood produces is that they presuppose that life happens linearly. When I saw Deadpool I wasn’t blown away by it but I loved the non-linear structure that they used. It made the film more interesting. Although this can be a powerful storytelling technique, it is not easy to do. So you should try writing a few stories with it to get the hang of it.

Don’t forget that once you have written your screenplay try and get some feedback. You might think it’s a masterpiece of literary work but others will give you more of an objective opinion. But, if you are really serious and want to master this craft, I really believe you should watch as many movies as possible to study the writing. Then write as many screenplays as you can. The more you write the more you’ll define your voice and style! Good luck!

In the recent movie, "The Castaway," Tom Hanks played
the role of a FedEx delivery man. His job was to fly all over
the world making sure that the packages were delivered on time.

One fateful trip found his cargo plane flying through a nasty
storm somewhere in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean.
The plane crashed near a tiny, deserted island. The only survivor
was Hanks.

Upon awakening the next day, Hanks found himself all alone.
Alone with nothing except the clothes on his back.

So picture this: no matches, no tools, no food, no shelter, no
communications, only 1 small flashlight along with a few packages
containing some useless items that had washed up on shore.

He learned to survive a meager existence sleeping in a small
dark cave. His food came from coconuts and the few fish he
managed to catch.

Tom Hanks was captured and held prisoner on an island with
seemingly no hope of ever escaping. Every day the island
dictated to him how he was to live.

He was trapped on that island because he saw no way of
escape.

His fears of losing what small sense of security the island
provided, as despicable as it was, prevented him from trying to
escape to a better life. A life he knew existed, but now only
dreamed about.

Looking out over the vast expanse of the ocean, he constantly
thought about that better life. But those thoughts soon returned
to seeing the opposition and competition that prevented him from
returning to what was rightfully his.

4 long years later, Tom Hanks made a decision.

He had grown sick and tired of having a nothing life.

It was either die a nobody, going no place, on a nowhere
island, continuing to live a struggling and pitiful hand to mouth
existence, or......die trying to escape to a real life.

The Pacific Ocean was the obstacle. His opponent was
his own fears of overcoming that obstacle.

He made a plan to escape. The day arrived and Hanks set sail
aboard a make shift, rinky dink raft of logs tied together
with tree bark and video tape.

He met every adversity the South Pacific could throw at him.
It wasn't easy, but finally, the rescue came.

The movie portrayed a very intense drama. An analogy of what
life is like for many people. Thousands of folks every day feel
trapped in a nowhere life. They feel like their life is being wasted,
like they are going nowhere, on a nowhere island with little hope
of escape.

Every day these people trudge off to a boring and hopeless
job that offers only an existence but no real sense of satisfaction
in life as accomplishing anything.

These people know there is a better life out there, a life they
so desire, yet it seems so far away. They are trapped on their
own island of despair.

Held there, not by the island itself, but by their own fears of
not being able to overcome the adversity and opposition that lies
between them and their dreams.

A few do escape from that island. They are the ones who
finally become sick and tired of living a wasted life, they are the
ones who overcome the fear inside.

They start out from their island, not really knowing if they will
make it or not. But they look that sea of difficulties square in the
eye and say, in the unforgettable words of Admiral David Farragut,
"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."

I worked closely with Titus Moody in the making of the movie 'The Last of the American Hoboes'. Recently I have found a few reviews of the movie on the internet. I was excited to see favorable mention of some my early work in the music business in some, others were not as flattering. There was a couple of misspellings and an error in fact in that the movie wasn't released in the late '1970's' rather around 1971 or 1972. Below is a composite-example of a couple of them. I corrected the misspellings in this post. I have tried to contact the posters but so far have not had a response. There was no copyright protection notice and since the reviews deal with my work I believe I have the right to comment on them in this way.

If you've ever wanted a close up experience with real life hoboes and their stories this is one of those rare films that provides just that. Filmed in a documentary, story-telling form that provides the history of the hobo; going back to how they began riding the rails, looking for work during the great depression, and how they would put a mark near a house that was friendly to hoboes to the story of Hal Jon Norman-Actor and how he lost his leg while trying to jump on a moving train as a youth. A Juddy Phillips produced soundtrack the best cut being 'Like A Hobo Should' by Gary Revel also tracks by: The Chapparral Brothers, Wayne Storm, Brian Mark and sounds from the street and the hobo jungle brought by Hobo Actor Journalist The Nobel 'Kid' Chissel, Mike DeTemple, and The Salvation Army Band. The movie is rare and collectible. I saw it at a screening many years ago and bought one of the soundtrack albums at a garage sale. The soundtrack album cover-photography by Ken Berg folds out and is a unique collectible in it's own right. Inside the cover it says, "A Judy Russell Gary Revel Byron Spears Movement". The song credits show that Gary Revel wrote and or performed on about half of the cuts on the album. I remember Titus Moody produced and directed. The movie premiered in the late 1970's at the Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa. An enjoyable entertaining film.

The eminent Marathi actor, the one who played the role of Gandhiji in Munnabhai Lage Raho Dilip Prabhawalkar plays the role of Pandit Daya Shastri, Aartis father. The movie will also star Govind Namdeo, Asrani, and Bharti Achrekar. Little known Pallavi Sharma makes her debut in the movie and will be seen playing the role of Geeta.

The movie is the directorial debut of Ajoy and has been produced by Kunwar Pragy Arya, Sanjay Bhattacharjee and Sushma Reddy. Renowned lyricist Gulzar has written the lyrics for this movie, while singers Sukhwinder Singh, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mohit Chauhan have given their vocals for the songs in the movie. Hollywoods big boys Warner Bros produced this movie with Aryan Brothers Entertainment. The movie is all set to release on 22nd October 2010.

Following in the steps of Shahrukh Khans hit Swades which was shot in the village of Wai, the director of the film has chosen to shoot the movie in the small town of Sonapur. To make a village story authentic, you cannot create it in a studio. Our entire film is based in the village. So we chose to shoot at actual location in Wai and Mahabaleshwar. Certain sequences were done at Gorai too...We really had to be very creative with our lighting and camera to get proper shots, says the debutant director.

Hancock

Hancock is a great Will Smith movie. You can watch with your family and friends and have a movie night. It would also be considered a really cool gift for someone who is a Will Smith fan or a fan of his movies.

Hancock is one of Will Smiths latest movies, but it really doesn't have that Will Smith charm that some of the others have. The movie got mixed reviews, some loved some didn't feel like it measured up.

This movie is about Will Smith being a regular looking guy with super powers. He is confused about where he came from and what he is doing and somehow seems to make a mess everywhere he goes and tries to help.

He ends up running into an image consultant, Jason Bateman, and saving his life. He undergoes a transformation of sorts and makes some changes in order to reinvent his image with the public. Needless to say, all the people who were upset with Hancock changed their tune while he was away and were clamoring for his help when he wasn't around to prevent the crime rate from rising.

The story is an interesting take on the whole super hero genre and with the recent trend of showing the other side of super hero life. Films like The Watchmen and comic book series like Civil War that shows the human side or the dark side of super heroes has opened a whole new way to tell their stories. Why shouldn't super heroes have feelings and emotions? You got a little bit of that with the Superman movies of the early eighties, but they were afraid to explore the underside of the whole genre like the new films like the new Dark Knight movies. People like their super heroes to be a little more human, to feel pain, to make choices that don't always seem black and white on the surface. Hancock does a good job in that area, but just doesn't quite hit it hard enough.

You should watch this movie at least one time to form your own opinion. The extras are good too.

Plus points:

Naga Shourya is perfect as the boy next door. He has a good ease in romantic scenes and he manages to support Srinivas Avasarala well in comedy scenes. Avasarala is very good as the awkward boss Uday. His desperation to marry Prabhavathi is hilarious.Raasi Khanna is a good find and this actress can get some good film in the future. Posani and Rao Ramesh are decent.Good second half is a major asset for the film. The comedy will work in one of the malls and multiplexes. Restaurant scene Avasarala with Raasi Khanna's hilarious.

Less Points:

The film is a bit long. The first half could have been trimmed significantly as the romantic track between Naga Shourya and Raasi Khanna is not too good.Placement of the songs is very bad throughout the film. They do not allow the flow in any way.Comedy and romantic scenes will not work in the centers B and C. It is a strictly central film.

Technical aspects :

Cinematography is good. Editing is poor. Kalyani Koduri did a decent job with the musical score and background. Dialogues are very good.Avasarala direction in this film is average. He has to work on his narrative style for better speed. Although this film is a small budget film, the production values are equal to a regular commercial film. The production company has ensured that they are not compromising on the richness of the film, and have once again proved their belief to filmmaking

Verdict:

The IRS allows you to hire your school-age children as part-
time employees for your business. Then, you pay them a
reasonable salary for their work that is then used to cover

tax deduction. However, your policy for covering these
expenses must be in writing and copies of all receipts and
bills should be maintained for your business records.

Besides the obvious benefits of being able to write-off
these costs, hiring your child as an employee can have
other positive effects. You will save time because of the
additional help your new staff will provide. While they
handle the menial duties, you can concentrate on running a
successful business and earning more money. And with your
children on the staff and on the payroll, they - and your
spouse - will be more likely to support your venture.
There's also no better way to teach your children the value
of money than by having them work for it and get Uncle

Considine sets the tone early when Joseph, in a pure, misdirected rage, kicks his dog to death, an act of uncontrolled anger that only serves to enrage him further. It seems unlikely then that any good can come of a chance encounter with charity shop worker Hannah (Olivia Colman). To him, she is the epitomy of a middle-class do-gooder, with her gentle demeanour and offer to pray for him. In reality, however, she, too, has a ringside seat for misdirected violence - only this time as a victim of her husband.

There's a sense of damaged souls finding common ground, as a fledgling relationship develops between the pair, but violence is a constant companion in Considine's movie - and it's violence of a very real and visceral sort, as things get nasty in the way that gritty British movies such as Nil By Mouth (surely an influence here) have a tendency to do. The dogs in this film may not come out on top, but they aren't the only beasts acting on impulse, with the humans - particularly the men - being shown to be every bit, if not more territorial, violent and animalistic than their four-legged companions.

Initially, Considine shies away from showing too much of the violence, letting implication speak louder than a full frontal assault. But as his film progresses he seems to lose faith in his audience to get the picture and begins to wallow in it more than is necessary, particularly abuse of the marital sort. The lack of upbeat moments also makes this the cinematic equivalent of blunt force trauma, where a more experienced director would have known shade works best when you let in some light.

What really stands out in Tyrannosaur, however, are the towering performances - both of which won breakout awards at Sundance Film Festival. Mullan - able to show inner turmoil with little more than the set of his jaw - has rarely been better than here, allowing us a window into the conflict in Joseph's soul. Eddie Marsan, too, puts in an intense and compelling turn as Hannah's abusive spouse. But it is Olivia Colman who is the real revelation. Best known for her comedy turns in the likes of Peep Show and That Mitchell And Webb Look, she sinks her teeth into Hannah and doesn't let go, expertly creating a magnetic combination of fragility and unexpected steel.

Although some will find the unremitting portrayal of violence difficult to stomach, this is nonetheless an assured debut that has already won the directing award at Sundance and which promises better to come, and is worth seeing on the strength of its performances alone.

Escaping from your Job Search Groundhog Day

The actor Bill Murray earned critical acclaim for his performance in 2003's Lost in Translation. It was a great movie about someone feeling like he was in a rut - both with his career and his personal life - and how he escaped from it. In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray plays a weatherman who has to live Groundhog Day over and over until he gets it "right." To make matters more complicated, he is the only one who knows he wakes up every day and it's February 2nd -- to everyone else, life is progressing as usual. Plus, he has no idea why he has to live the day over and over again and no idea how to get out of it. First he tries being really mean to everyone. Then he tries becoming a criminal -- stealing money from an armored car and getting thrown in prison for drunk driving. He even goes as far as committing suicide several times. But no matter what, every morning he wakes up and it's still Groundhog Day.

He goes through a big slump of feeling completely worthless and mad at the world. Then one day he realizes he should really take action to go after what he wants in life. He decides to pursue a crush he has on his boss, an attractive woman named Rita. At first he tries using his super-powers of living the same day over and over again to gain information he can use to trick Rita into falling in love with him -- such as remembering her favorite foods and childhood memories. This doesn't work because Rita sees through the tricks and realizes he's not being genuine. However in the process, Bill Murray's character actually falls in love with Rita and with her passion for excellence and helping other people.

At this point, a transformation happens in our hero's life. Even though he's stuck in a rut and living the same day over and over again, he decides to make the best of the situation. Instead of being mean to people and ignoring them every day, he starts being nice and helping people. He starts learning new skills like how to play the piano and how to ice sculpt. By the end of the movie, he has really become an amazing individual - saving many peoples' lives and playing the piano in a brilliant concert performance for the townspeople. Rita, his boss, is genuinely impressed and truly falls in love with Murray's character, Phil. They fall asleep together after having had a deep and meaningful conversation, and the next morning it's not Groundhog Day anymore.
