5 Secret Techniques to Writing a Killer Script!

Writing is not easy, especially writing screenplays. In fact, in order to get good, I recommend that you write as often as possible. I see too many screenwriters starting out with false expectations. They think that they will sit down and on their first past write a great film. In my experience, great films come from screenwriters who have not only written material many times before but their best works come from a number of rewrites.

I advise that if you want to be a great filmmaker then you should learn how to be a great writer. The filmmaker is the visual storyteller of the script. The problem is that in our era writing good scripts, especially on the indie level, is not taken seriously enough. Most aspiring filmmakers strive to mimic Hollywood blockbusters. So they not only copy ideas from Hollywood, which are usually bad and done by committee, but in doing so they fail to perfect their craft and find their own voice as a writer.

Here are 5 Secrets that I find common in really good scripts. Of course, these are not the end all be all secrets on this subject matter because it is so lengthy it would take publishing several books to cover the ins and outs of screenwriting. 1. Have a great inciting incident. The is the motivation for things to happen. It gets things moving and provides context for the rest of the film. This doesn’t have to be action packed but it does grip the reader or audience right away. It is the key element that will propel your protagonist and antagonist into action.

2. Make every page a cliffhanger or a page-turner. Now, I am exaggerating a bit, but a good screenplay should leave the reader on the edge of his or her seat. This means you should structure your scenes in such a way that not only keeps them guessing as to what happens next but creates a burning desire to want to know what happens in the next scene.

3. Tell your story visually. Too often writers try to explain everything through exposition. Instead, use symbolism and imagery to convey the meanings you are trying to communicate to the audience. Remember the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well, try trimming down your dialogue and include more visual expression. 4. A really good script typically has a great and complex villain. In fact, the best films are the ones that have an antagonist that you love to hate. But you shouldn’t forget that their motivation for being the way they are shouldn’t be trivial. Too many films suffer from poorly written villains whose motives were unclear.

5. Have your protagonist be imperfect. In fact, the characters that are written the best are usually those fighting with inner demons. This forces them to go through some type of character arc which, when dealt with, gives them the strength to confront and be victorious over the antagonist.

Bonus Tip: Try telling your story in a nonlinear fashion. The problem I have with a lot of the films that Hollywood produces is that they presuppose that life happens linearly. When I saw Deadpool I wasn’t blown away by it but I loved the non-linear structure that they used. It made the film more interesting. Although this can be a powerful storytelling technique, it is not easy to do. So you should try writing a few stories with it to get the hang of it.

Don’t forget that once you have written your screenplay try and get some feedback. You might think it’s a masterpiece of literary work but others will give you more of an objective opinion. But, if you are really serious and want to master this craft, I really believe you should watch as many movies as possible to study the writing. Then write as many screenplays as you can. The more you write the more you’ll define your voice and style! Good luck!

Liposuction: Not Just For Movie Stars Anymore

If you are considering having liposuction, learn some information about it. Although the procedure is usually safe, it still should not be undertaken lightly, even if Hollywood movie stars make it seem mundane.

If you have negative body image problems, rest assured that you are not alone. In fact, the use of liposuction to remove excess fat from your body has become very popular in recent years. Therefore, you should have the hernia surgically repaired beforehand. If you have had this procedure done in the past, you may have scar tissue present, making the repeat procedure more difficult to perform. You may also choose to have multiple procedures done at the same time, in which case you would have prolonged anesthesia exposure as well as an increased period of bed rest postoperatively, which leads to an increased risk of blood clots.

In fact, the Italian ministry of health recently confiscated about 7,000 pairs of 3D movie glasses over evidence that they may not have been cleaned effectively between uses and may contribute to short-term eye-sight problems.

A recent study done by Good Housekeeping revealed that the special glasses movie watchers everywhere don so they can have the 3D experience carry germs that cause skin infections, conjunctivitis, food poisoning, sepsis, and even pneumonia.

Headaches and Blurred Vision

Headaches and blurred vision during and after 3D movies is usually a result of strained eyes. Normally when an object moves toward you your eyes converge (move inward) and follow its path and also accommodate (change the lens shape) to keep the object in focus.

However, when watching a 3D movie, as your eyes try to follow the objects that move off the screen toward you they converge to follow the object but can not accommodate because they must stay focused on the screen, rather than the object. This unnatural movement often causes headaches and blurred vision.

A University of California Berkeley dubbed this effect "vergence accommodation conflict" and found that people in their 50's and 60's were less likely to experience side effects while younger people may struggle more.

What You Can Do

Most theaters with newer technology use a single projector to alternate between both the right-eye and left-eye images (as opposed to the old-fashioned approach of using two projectors) at a rate of 144 times per second. This minimizes the properties that caused headaches among viewers.

Older stereoscopic glasses (with one red and one blue lens) may also contribute to headaches, so finding a theater with new technology will help reduce your chances of coming out of the movie with a headache. Also, trying not to look at the unfocussed parts of the image may help keep headaches under control.


Motion Sickness

Movies done in 3D confuse your brain when they trick your inner ear into thinking you are moving while your body knows it is sitting still. When this confusion happens, people often experience motion sickness, headaches, and nausea.

What You Can Do

Looking away from the screen for a minute when you feel nauseas may help reduce your feelings of motion sickness. You can also take some motion sickness medication before going to see the movie.

Which movie marks its World Television Premier this weekend? While most of us are fed up seeing the likes of Agneepath on Zee Cinema, Wednesday on UTV Movies or Robot on Sony Max, we expect the Hindi movie schedules to be more sorted.

Repetitive schedules every week might urge the fans to switch to other channels in search of new films, unless it is a film like 3 Idiots or DDLJ that's being telecasted.

But again it depends on which film is being telecasted. It's easy to get grandiose ideas when you first start out in filmmaking. These film training tips will help you get grounded and work within your budget.

Many times people don't really get what is meant by this. I'm not referring to writing like a professor and using fancy dialogue. The writing within your means that I am talking about has to do with your budget. This film training article is to help you keep your script within the budget that you have available. It's very easy to get carried away by your vision of what you want you movie to be like. Beginning filmmakers find it easy to visualize the big picture, but the trouble comes when its time to convert it down to the details. Let's talk about your script. Here's an example of a simple line in a script: "The Firemen arrived at the scene." Ok, that doesn't really sound that complicated. But, stop and think about it for a minute. What does this mean to you? First off, it means there needs to be a fire truck. Does your budget allow for you to get one? If the answer is no, then what are the firemen supposed to arrive in? Maybe a delivery truck? Oh, wait, that's expensive too. Then there are the firemen. Does your budget extend to hiring a lot of firemen? How about their uniforms? Also, how big is the fire? I'm not going to go into how much it might cost to create the fire. Then you have to think about the equiment that's needed to fight the fire. This whole scene is enough to create major havoc with your budget. Now, imagine if your script read like this instead: "The army arrived at the scene." Just picture it - tanks, armored cars and jeeps, soldiers and their weapons, uniforms, etc. You get the idea, I'm sure. It only takes one line in the script to blow your whole budget. It will take some planning from you not to veer off into an Avatar adventure or other special effects productions. You don't want to end up with a movie you can't possible make. I mean, that's fine if you have an unlimited budget, but let's face it, that's not usually the case when starting out. The effects don't have to be elaborate to tell a good story. Movie making is an adventure as well as a learning experience. Some people shell out the dough and go to film school, which let's face it, is quite expensive. Other people prefer to learn as they go.
