How We Got Movie Stars

Early movies had no stories, no stars and no sound. A popular movie in the 1890's was two girls getting undressed by a lake. Right before their last garments came off, a train came by to block your view. In the next scene the two girls were swimming in the lake. The film was a hit throughout the country.

One old farmer went and saw this same movie for weeks and weeks. One day the theater manager came down and said," Say old timer. Every day we show the same film with the girls, the train and the lake and every day you keep coming back." "Well sonny, one of these days I'm hoping the train will be late!"

Many of the early film actors were quite content to stay anonymous, reasoning that the new flickers were a novelty and would damage their reputation on the legitimate stage. They were often expected to work all day long. Their duties included hammering nails, painting the set, picking up trash, and lifting heavy equipment. There were no trailers or perks or glamour or big houses. A casting director might meet a newspaper boy on the street and hire him as an lead actor for five dollars a day. Ladies of the evening were often given jobs simply because they provided their own wardrobes. Not knowing their real names, the movie going public would give their favorite actor's appropriate nicknames such as "the waif" or "the cowboy". The growing curiosity surrounding the identities lead to the birth of movie fan magazines such as Photoplay in 1909. But fearing that their players would demand huge salaries the producers still refused to release their names.

One of the most prominent movie theater owners was a former clothing store manager from Oshkosh, Wisconsin named Carl Laemmle, the eventual founder of Universal Studios. By 1909 he was sick of buying movies from Thomas Edison and had decided to make his own. Laemmle would listen each night, as his patrons would leave his theater; many would excitedly discuss the actors on the screen. He decided if he was going to produce his own pictures he would sell them by creating a star.

He wasted no time in hiring a twenty-year-old actress named Florence Lawrence known to the public as the Biograph Girl after the studio she worked for. One tale had the four-foot Laemmle conducting a midnight raid of Biograph where he carried his new star away over his shoulder. He then announced her real name and 250-dollar week salary to the new fan magazines then arranged for her to mysteriously disappear. "My competitors will stop at nothing to ruin me. They've kidnapped poor Florence, perhaps even killed her!" he told the press.

For the next few weeks Americans followed the saga in the newspapers, there were several false reports of foul play. One account had Florence killed by a streetcar. Then, as pre-arranged by Carl Laemmle, Florence "miraculously" resurfaced in St. Louis were she was mobbed, her clothes ripped off by hired fans. And so Florence Lawrence gained a huge following. Movies with her name on the marquee started selling like hot cakes.

A few years later she was working on a film when a fire broke out on the set. Young Florence courageously risked her life to save her fellow actors and the incident left her temporarily paralyzed. By the time she recovered no one would hire her. But though she ended up in obscurity, Florence Lawrence was the first movie star.

Walt Disney's Horror Movie

In 1934, when Walt Disney called for a meeting among his artists, a rumor had spread that he was going to shut the studio down and they would all be left unemployed during the great depression. Instead he personally told them in his own spellbinding way the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which he intended to make into his first feature length film. It was a risk unlike any other he had taken before. The film would cost a million and a half dollars at a time Disney was spending anywhere from ten to thirty thousand on his short cartoons. Doubts came from his wife Lillian and his brother and business partner Roy, who were sure they would be in debt for most of the rest of the lives. Also nervous was Walt's backer Bank of America, who at one point interrupted the production by cutting off his credit. Then there were the heads of the other studios like MGM, Universal and Warner Brothers. They would gather for their weekly poker games at the Hillcrest Country Club and speculate that Walt, who they called "the Mickey Mouse Man", would never succeed, no one would sit still for an hour and a half to watch a cartoon. And the press referred to Snow White as "Disney's Folly".

Despite the doubters and his own health problems (he suffered from a thyroid condition), Walt pressed forward relentlessly for three years. The key to the film, as far as Disney was concerned was the evil queen/peddler woman. Snow White was sympathetic, the dwarfs were humorous, but the villain had to be horrifying to keep the audience interested. The vocals were performed by a renowned stage actress named Lucille Laverne. Her haughty voice was a great fit as the queen, but her playing of the character after she transformed into the old crone had some at the studio worried. "Wait, I have an idea", she said. She left the recording room for a few minutes then returned. "I'm ready". She delivered her lines in a way that chilled and thrilled the Disney staff. After she finished there was applause and she was asked what she did when she left. She smiled and said," I took my teeth out!"

Walt's calculations were correct, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs was a hit throughout the entire world in 1938 and for many years beyond, keeping audiences riveted. The only down side for Walt was that maybe the peddler woman was a little too horrifying, he was disturbed by reports from Radio City Music Hall in New York where the film was setting box office records. It turned out that every few days the theater management had to replace seats. . . due to excessive wetness.

With digital snaps you have the capability to use softwaresimilar to Adobe Photoshop sumptuous and Microsoft image to edit photos andcreate corrections.
Important thoughts when selecting adigital cameraare: What do you desire the camera toperform? What features do you need? How much do you desire to use on yourcamera? There are expert elevated end cameras that price thousands of dollars, contemptible casual cameras and an enormous selection of mid-level camerasobtainable to select from. Will you be snapping pictures for the internet andfor electronic mail? Will your photographs be printed? For usual print sizephotographs and web photographs a 1 to2 megapixel digital camera will perform. In truth for the web a lesser megapixel would be enhanced as elevatedresolution pictures are measured to download.

Do you desire a point-and-click digital camera? Are yousomebody who just needs to get the photo taken with the smallest amount of trouble?Do you desire a camera that does the whole thing mechanically and you easilyhave to press a button? Otherwise, are you somebody who would quite shape outthe most excellent settings for your digital camera and create the adjustmentsphysically? It's always most excellent to discover a camera that suits yourreason, require and capability. High end, elevated resolution cameras areexcellent for photos that are to be printed. The bigger the number of pixelsthe elevated the resolution. High resolution does not create intelligence onthe web as the additional resolution does not create images show any sharper. Also, elevated resolution photographs are slow to download on the internet.

To produce your photos you will require a good excellencecolor printer. If photographs are to be printed, elevated resolution does create adissimilarity depending how big you want the image to be. The New Movie Technologies

Movie presentation has come a long way since its beginnings. Undoubtedly, the most significant advancement is the introduction of digital cinema. It's this technology that makes 3D movies worth watching.

Three D (3D), with its funny glasses, is nothing new. Surround sound has been around for a long time, too. For those of you as old as me, remember the curved cinemascope screens?

All of these advancements have been made to enhance our feeling of being there when watching a movie in a theatre or cinema. But they were all missing something....something, Im pleased to say, that has now come to a theatre near you.

Digital cinema, in my opinion, is the only important development in the industry in decades. The reasons are obvious.

You can now watch the equivalent of high definition television images on a screen the size of a house.

No longer do you have to watch a washed-out looking third generation film print that comes complete with scratches, burn holes and grain.

The image is stable as a rock, since theyre not dragging film sprockets over registration pins as in a traditional projector.

Because the movie originates on a hard drive rather than big reels of film stock, the presentation is not limited to the jittery 24 frames-per-second rate. Smoother pans are now possible since, in the digital domain, algorithms can be applied to correct such artifacts.

No more pops and clicks. Again, sound originates from an entirely digital source.

What really motivated me to write this was my recent viewing of Avatar. The story line didnt get my bum into the seat at the theatre. It was interesting, but not the most compelling movie Ive ever seen. As a contractor for one of the companies that makes digital cinema projectors here in Ontario (and that supplied my local theatre), I was keen to see what digital projection, coupled with 3D technology, could do.

It was immediately clear to me that the same effect could not have been produced with film-based 3D. The timing was definitely right for Mr. Cameron to release this epic. Technology made it work. Any artifacts I detected were minor, brief and probably undetectable by the general populace. This was a perfect experience, flawless from corner to corner. I even found myself twitching to dodge a projectile that seemed to fly off the screen and whiz right by my head!

So whats next for the cinema experience? In my humble opinion, the quality and resolution of the visual presentation is now approaching the limits of what we humans can discern. So, maybe the wrap-around screen will make a comeback, or holograms. How about the stimulation of other senses, such as smell and touch?

And what about the home theatre? If the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is an accurate indicator, 3D HDTV will soon be coming to a living room near you. Think of it. Not only will you have to find the remote in the couch, but maybe your 3D glasses as well.

When we talk about RPG games or role playing games there are two different types a person can participate in. There are either the single player versions or those that require a number of different players more commonly referred to as multi player RPG's. Below we will take a look at what exactly these two versions of what has become a very popular past time for some people today.

The role playing games where one person is playing (single) will often not require as much creativity on the part of the player as would those that multi player ones do. Also with these particular games the player is actually required to conform to the rules that have been defined by the developer of the game initially. So in most cases you will find that there is no one to monitor play (the games master) and who can also help the player create interactions with his character and those that are on the board.

So when it comes to participating in an RPG game the solo player will instead find that they have a very few limited solutions to choose from. It is the predetermined solutions which will then help them to make a decision on how to rectify the problem they are faced with.

Those players who prefer to play solo games rather than multi player ones can either do it through use of adventure books or by playing video based versions of the games. But with both of these types of solo RPG games the player will find themselves having to interact with characters that are predefined and will be included within the game.

Whereas multi player games requires 2 or more people to participate in the adventure as it plays out. Players find that the more of them that are participating in a particular game then it will increase in its complexity and which makes for more of a challenge for those participating.

But as well as the players participating in these games many will generally require a games master also who can monitor the action of the game as it takes place closely. It is this person who will ensure that the rules of the game are adhered to as well as it is these people who choose when to add any new scenarios to the game for the players then to work their way through. Some times if there are large numbers of players taking part in one particular multi player RPG game often referred to as MMORPGS (Massively Multi Player Role Playing Games) then more than one games master will be required to monitor the action.

So as you can see from above when it comes to RPG games you have a choice. You can either go for the single player or multi player games. Certainly if you are someone who is just starting out and learning to understand the nuances of this particular form of gaming then it may be wise to start off by playing single player RPG games first.

A Georgia Superhero!

One thing Ive loved since I was a little boy were superheroes. Believe me, I read so many Superman and Batman comic books when I was a kid that its not even funny. I loved their varied super powers, and how they constantly got out of scrapes that would have destroyed any normal man. I was so into them that I also became big fans of the Flash, Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, the Green Lantern, and several others. Im also quite excited that theres a new Batman movie out, Batman Begins, and its early reviews are outstanding! To say that Ill see it more than once is an understatement, the Batman character is terrifically fascinating, and I hope thisll be the start of a whole new string of Batman films.

All that having been said, Ive started wondering if I could create a superhero. A superhero whos different, a Southern superhero, and more specifically, a Georgia superhero. A superhero that we Georgians can claim as one of our own. And, if I think really hard about it, if I think of all the unique things that Georgia has to offer, and if I think about the kind of superhero that would excite me enough to go out and buy a comic book, one potential superhero fits the bill. Readers of this column, yall are about to be the first people ever to hear about our newest superhero, yes, our first ever Georgia superhero - ladies and gentlemen, let me proudly introduce you to....

Red Clay Man!

Yes, thats right, Red Clay Man! Faster than a man whos just eaten a large helping of aged jalapenos! More powerful than a Okefenokee gator in heat! Able to leap tall fire ant mounds in a single bound!

Isnt he the most? And dont laugh, Red Clay Man is endowed with powers far different than that of the average superhero. All Red Clay Man has to do to get ready for some crime fighting is to go out into rural Georgia and fill up his Crackerjack Back Pack with handfuls of red clay. Armed with one of our most precious natural substances, he can go out and fight crime like no ones business! Just think of it - a criminal holds up a bank in Metter and decides to drive out in the country to count the loot. He pulls over on some little back road somewhere and starts counting. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, a big glob of red clay hits him smack between the eyes! Hes blinded! And, if he happens to have the presence of mind to try and run away, well, two globs of wet red clay splash down on the ground right in front of him, causing him to slip and fall. At that point, Red Clay Man slaps his kudzu cuffs on the evildoer and renders justice to him, Georgia style!

Okay, there may be a couple of minor flaws in Red Clay Man, but hey, every superhero has his or her weaknesses. I guess he could only fight crime out in the rural parts of Georgia because hed have to keep his supply of red clay continually replenished, but hey, rural Georgia has crime too, right? And I suppose hed need a way to get around our state in order to fight crime, so what better vehicle for him to ride around in and terrify evildoers with than the Maypop Mobile? And, since most crime fighters need a sidekick, a partner, someone to help get him out of those tight superhero type scrapes that all the great crime fighters get into, I guess Ill need to create him one. Folks, I have the perfect one in mind, Ill team Red Clay Man up with our newest superhero sidekick, the Boiled Peanut! Put those two together, and you have one heckuva crime fighting team, two superheroes thatll put the fear of our previous state flag into any evil doer that challenges them!

Red Clay Man and the Boiled Peanut, our two newest superheroes and Georgia ones to boot! Hey, if we can host the Olympics in Atlanta, and if we can elect a President from here, well, we can have our own superheroes, too! And, its in our economic best interests if Red Clay Man catches on - just think about it. Batman is out there selling tons of t-shirts, toys, and more, just think of the red clay samples we could ship out of here on account of our newest superhero! Why, the proceeds from these sales might be so great that they could even help get the City of Macon out of hock!

Emotional Affair - 3 Steps To Stop The Haunting Images After An Affair

One of the biggest heartaches for someone who found out about their spouse's emotional affair is the haunting images of their spouse's lover, playing like a horror-movie in their head.

For victims of cheating, there are many reactions to this onslaught of images:

• Loss of sleep
• Loss of urge for food
• Inability to focus on tasks
• Find it difficult to save the marriage

It's not unusual to carry around these images in your mind, but it is possible to get rid of them. In the next paragraph you will learn 3 steps that will give you the strength to stop he haunting images so you are able to regain your normal life while healing your shattered emotions .

Dealing With The Pain of Post-Emotional Affair Images

First of all, you need to understand that eventually, the affect these images have on you is not permanent. The horror film inside your mind will finish, and your life will go on.

However, in the early stages--when you have just found out about your spouse's emotional affair--is where it hurt the most. There is no need for you to know any specific details to get the horror movie to start playing. You, as lots of other injured ones will create parts of the movie yourself in heart-rending detail.

The only thing that you are sure of is that your spouse is having an affair, and probably a few other uncertain details. But that won't necessarily stop you from having images that include:

1. A picture of the other person as being perfectly attractive, funny, charming, etc.

2. Both of them hugging, kissing--and more intimate scenarios.

3. Your spouse gazing at the other person in a way they've never looked at you.

4. The other person being treated better and valued more than your spouse has ever treated or valued you.

The haunting of these images are truly disturbing, viscously devouring your focus on life, evoking nightmares in your restless sleep and altogether drowning you in depression.

Everything you imagine is apparently a good illustration of every emotions that you are also experiencing, which include fear, distrust and betrayed. The haunting images and the negative emotions start to feed into one another, forming an abuse cycle that will leave you feeling totally drained.

This is the rollercoaster of emotions so many victims of an emotional affair are talking about. Ultimately, this can derail any efforts or strides you've attempted to make to survive the affair and save your marriage. You are just too exhausted..

Stop the Emotional Drain of Haunting Images

As the cycle of recurring images and negative emotions drain you, you begin to feel more vulnerable and find the images even more difficult to escape. The further down you go, the longer it takes to climb back out.

From wherever you're starting from today, it's going to take a big push on your part to stop the cycle. But remember: you own your mind, and only you have the power to take charge of it. The following steps will help you regain that power over your own mind, while eliminating the power of those haunting images:

Step 1: Put the Haunting Pictures on the Clock

To start the process of regaining the power of your mind, set a specific time in a day and only let the images come to you during this period.. This might not work every time, but if an image begins to come up at a time outside of the set schedule, remind yourself that it's not time for haunting images yet.

This exercise will help you to start managing what will be allowed to come into your mind, and the appropriate time for it to be there. It is a shift that not immediately obvious, but can give absolute power to your mind. Think of it as standing up to a bully.

Step 2: In the Specified Time, Allow the Images to Appear

If needed, imagine yourself opening a door and greeting those images. Let the images troop in wearing whatever form they want. You are only temporarily tolerating these unwanted guests, and at the end of the designated time, you can push them back out the door. But not before you have had some fun at their expense.

Step 3: Rewind the Image

Take one of the images, and pretend it's on a movie reel. Start at the end, and imagine the whole scene running backwards. By doing this you are toying with the structure of the image, which may help you feel better because you will feel that you have the power to manipulate the image however you want to. You will realize that the image is nothing more than a conceit of your mind and you have the power to determine what to do with it.

Again, you will need some time to take charge over these haunting images, but the result will help you in the healing process of your shattered emotions.

Film training - Tips for making your movie within your means

It's easy to get grandiose ideas when you first start out in filmmaking. These film training tips will help you get grounded and work within your budget.

Many times people don't really get what is meant by this. I'm not referring to writing like a professor and using fancy dialogue. The writing within your means that I am talking about has to do with your budget. This film training article is to help you keep your script within the budget that you have available. It's very easy to get carried away by your vision of what you want you movie to be like. Beginning filmmakers find it easy to visualize the big picture, but the trouble comes when its time to convert it down to the details. Let's talk about your script. Here's an example of a simple line in a script: "The Firemen arrived at the scene." Ok, that doesn't really sound that complicated. But, stop and think about it for a minute. What does this mean to you? First off, it means there needs to be a fire truck. Does your budget allow for you to get one? If the answer is no, then what are the firemen supposed to arrive in? Maybe a delivery truck? Oh, wait, that's expensive too. Then there are the firemen. Does your budget extend to hiring a lot of firemen? How about their uniforms? Also, how big is the fire? I'm not going to go into how much it might cost to create the fire. Then you have to think about the equiment that's needed to fight the fire. This whole scene is enough to create major havoc with your budget. Now, imagine if your script read like this instead: "The army arrived at the scene." Just picture it - tanks, armored cars and jeeps, soldiers and their weapons, uniforms, etc. You get the idea, I'm sure. It only takes one line in the script to blow your whole budget. It will take some planning from you not to veer off into an Avatar adventure or other special effects productions. You don't want to end up with a movie you can't possible make. I mean, that's fine if you have an unlimited budget, but let's face it, that's not usually the case when starting out. The effects don't have to be elaborate to tell a good story. Movie making is an adventure as well as a learning experience. Some people shell out the dough and go to film school, which let's face it, is quite expensive. Other people prefer to learn as they go.

The importance of surround sound is often overlooked when it comes to building and creating home theater systems. You should never underestimate that power that sound holds over all of our television, movie, and sporting event watching experiences. Movie sound tracks are often used in order to create drama, heighten suspense, and even to enhance moods or themes within the movie. Surround sound is for more than mere movies and television however. This great type of sound also serves to bring great depth to our favorite music

Surround sound gets its name from the fact that you are literally surrounded with the sound. This is a vast improvement over the typical two speaker systems in the days of old (oddly enough not all that long ago). Surround sound works to imitate the ambient noises that we often hear during the course of the day. This is often done for the purpose of art imitating life. By hearing the roll of thunder from every side rather than merely the left or the right we are experiencing the real beauty of surround sound and enjoying the more realistic effects it lends itself to.

When you are looking into surround sound systems for your home or home theater you will come across some terminology that may seem foreign and unfamiliar. Surround Sound 5.1 indicates a system that uses five speakers and one subwoofer in order to deliver the sounds. This sound is often referred to as Dolby Digital. A new term that has been cropping up more and more often in movie circles is THX. This is known as surround sound 6.1, which involves the use of 6 speakers and a subwoofer. The center speaker in this system should be located in the center behind the listener in order to add yet another layer to the sound. Surround sound 7.1 adds yet another speaker to the mix in order to create an even more authentic sound. The more speakers in your surround sound system, the more realistic the sound will be and the better able you will be as an audience member to find your place within the action.

In order to get surround sound you need more than a set of speakers. You will first need a receiver in order to 'receive' and process the information and send the digital signals and sounds in the direction they should go. If you are building a home theater you will want to make a good receiver a key investment in your overall system. This is an important component as sound is vital to a true 'movie going' experience, which is what a good home theater is meant to imitate.

A good receiver is essential not only for a good home theater but also any surround sound system that you wish to install (many people use these exclusively for gaming as well and they are quite effective for this particular purpose). When it comes to gaming, surround sound can identify your location in the action of the game. This works much like it does when watching movies. The more speakers you have in your system the better able you will be to identify from which direction actions, sounds, and such are being made. In games this can provide important clues that those with lesser sound systems will miss out on. Talk about an edge?

While the main purpose of surround sound is to simply enhance the entertainment experience I can think of very few better things to invest in when it comes to either a home theater or the ultimate gaming computer. Do your homework on the systems that are available and remember that good quality speakers are essential in carrying out the sound properly and you should plan to make a sizeable investment in both the speakers and the receiver or other sound components (if you decide to go that route for even better quality sound). Whatever you are using it for be sure that you play around with the sounds to find the best level for your personal enjoyment of your surround sound system.

4 Reasons to use teeth bleaching gel

First of all, tooth bleaching becomes a widely-appreciated fashion for a lot of people. Others simply want to show off whiter teeth to others. Others would make use of a tooth bleaching gel and some would opt for other techniques.

Tooth bleaching becomes a widely-appreciated fashion for a lot of people. Some have opted to have their teeth bleached because they envy their favorite movie stars dazzling with their shiny white teeth on the red carpet. Others simply want to show off whiter teeth to others. Others would make use of a tooth bleaching gel and some would opt for other techniques. There are a few who are a bit reluctant to using the tooth whitening gel though. Hier (German word for 'here') are reasons to use one.

# 1 People want to use a tooth bleaching gel to hide teeth stains. This is precisely the purpose of all other tooth whitening agents. The teeth, when exposed to stain-causing elements, can look dark in due time. Coffee drinking, indulging in chocolates and even puffing smoke cigars are causes that are related to this condition. In order to eliminate such stains that are hard to look at, using a whitening agent such as the tooth gel is a good thing to consider.

# 2 It is also considered as one of the most popular tooth bleaching products. The tooth bleaching gel works the same way as the toothpaste that we make use to brush our teeth. This makes the agent simpler to use than teeth whitening strips and all other bleaching products offered in the market. It can even be bought over-the-counter, no prescription required. That makes the gel a very popular option. In some cases though, the gel may also be used by dentists in their clinics.

# 3 It gives results closest to professional whitening. As mentioned, a tooth bleaching gel can be used both at home and in-office. Since a gel provides that option for the tooth whitening process, expect that you'll see professional whitening results even when you use the agent at home. In hier, you can also make sure that other crevices are reached by the agent. Even if your dark teeth hide under covered creases of your gums, you can be sure the bleach will work on them.

# 4 Some tooth bleaching gel contains add-ons to make the whitening process faster. You can purchase these gels from online stores offering one. Special add-ons would include a light similar to what is used by a dentist for the tooth bleaching process. The light will make the results more permanent for your at-home bleaching option. One thing you must take note in hier, however, is to learn how to regulate the amount of light that passes to the gel. Otherwise, your teeth will be damaged by the ray of light. Likewise, you must not overdo the process of putting the gel on your teeth.

These are reasons for you to make use of the bleaching gel for the tooth whitening process. We have presented some of the facts above. You have seen how it may help you improve your teeth's look. One reminder in hier is to take necessary precautions. Yes, you are allowed to do the process on your own. Do not discount the fact that there may be risks you have to take when you do so. Get some good advice on how to do it.
