Maybe we should refer to managing our finances as a road map instead of a budget. It doesn't sound quite as bad and it identifies what you are doing more clearly.

Budgeting is exactly like taking a trip in your car. You  know where you are and where you want to go but you need a road map to find out how to get there. You are simply developing a plan or route if you prefer.

This ability to suspend aspects of the way we think is played upon by copywriters who target people looking for ways to make money online.

If we were not willing to believe (at least for 90 minutes or so) that the hero in the latest action movie is a real person, we would not enjoy the movie to any great extent. A good storyline, great scenery and impressive special effects do not make a gripping movie. All of these things would be wasted if we did not believe in the characters. It is only when we care about or identify with the characters that the movie successfully moves, interests or excites us.

If you think about some of the greatest movies of all time, you will know what I mean. Take Gone With The Wind: this is only a compelling movie if we believe (for the duration of the movie) that Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler are real people. Without that belief and consequent interest in the fate of the characters, the storyline alone would not inspire generations of people to watch the movie over and over again. When you watch Jaws, you have to believe the characters are real and are in danger of being consumed by the (also real) shark; if you don't employ this belief, you won't enjoy the film because there would be no excitement in it for you. Whether you are viewing a love story, a "person in peril" situation or a fight for justice in a courtroom drama, the same thing applies: you must be willing to believe in the characters for the story to have meaning.

The human brain is a strange and complex mechanism which allows us to "turn off" aspects of thinking which are, in effect, integral parts of our personality. This suspense of disbelief is what enables children to enjoy games of imagination: if you ask a three-year old whether her teddy bear can really talk the reply will most probably be "of course not" but the knowledge that she is pretending, does not remove the child's enjoyment of games where teddy "talks" to her.

Once you have planned and implemented your improvements, use other promotional tools to raise awareness of the new Intranet features, encourage disillusioned users back and to drive the usage and value of the Intranet. You could consider using screensavers, news feeds, alerts, electronic magazines, quizzes and polls as promotional tools with click through links to relevant Intranet pages (as well as other more traditional mediums).

Can We Handle the Truth?

Most people in America are busy with the details of achieving their goals and making their own place in the world. They have little time for themselves and don't want to spend it on some lost cause that most people don't care about. So it is with the injustice of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Even though most don't believe James Earl Ray killed Martin Luther King Jr. or at least not by him-self, they also don't have the time to try to figure it out. Some would say they just don't care; so what's the use of making a movie of the story of my investigation of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination?

What good will it do to have a full-length feature movie presented throughout the nations theaters that explores this matter when nobody has the time to care about it in today's environment? This is a question that I have asked myself for years; and continue to ask. Many believe very strongly that the story needs to be told and it needs to be told in just such a motion picture. Some believe that it is a story that has historical importance and is best served by being written in conjunction with a treatment of the civil rights movement and presented in a non-fiction literary work. Still others tell me that it should be a TV movie done in the tight commercial presentation that is best suited for today's contemporary television audience. Some would like to see it as a documentary or docu-drama. There are also those that just don't care about anything related to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and would rather everyone just quit talking about it.

If it is to be done in a film there are those that believe it can only succeed if it is a big budget, major studio production with the top producers, writers, and stars directed by the hottest new director. Others believe it can only be done independently with lesser-known talent and production entities.

There are also those who believe that the music is the key to the success of the film. The song I wrote in 1977, "They Slew the Dreamer" is now published by Sony Music. Sony has an opportunity to bring a successful music project to bear via the marketing of the movie. It's a little like which came first the chicken or the egg, and so the question; which should come first the music or the movie? The truth is, the music came first.

Of course to many, none of this should matter at all, a good cover-up deserves to stay covered. The director has patterned themafter classic video games. Included are punches, reversals, hit combinations,guitar wars, swords whips and more. When contact is made, say a punch to thehead, we see the actual words such as baam or slap appear at the point ofimpact. Then as the fighting continues these word bubbles fall to the floor andshatter. Simply amazing.

Each of the evil exes bring their own special skill set tothe fight, and that helps in preventing the fights from becoming too similar as Pilgrim must findunique ways to defeat each foe. Also, like a video game each evil ex (ie;level) is tougher than the previous one. When an evil ex is defeated theyimmediately collapse into a pile of game tokens, which Pilgrim must collect anduse in the next round.

Michael Cera is perfect as the slacker who will do anythingto hold onto the girl he loves. Kieran Culkin practically steals the movie as WallaceWells, Scotts gay roommate. Wells has many of the movies bet one-liners, andthese are sure to be quoted over and over in the coming months. All of the 7 Evil-Exsare very good, with Satya Bhabha (ex #1) and Mae Whiteman (ex #4) outstanding

With everything going on in this movie it is easy to loosesight of the real message, that every relationship comes with some baggage.Unlike other movies where the relationship participants rarely have much of apast, Pilgrim and Flowers both do. Its how they deal with them that determinesif they remain a couple.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World probably wont win any awards,but it is sure to be one of the most talked about pictures of 2010.

How did Hotmail gain over 12 million subscribers in 18 months? How did the very low budget movie The Blair Witch Project become such an incredibly successful phenomenon? The answer lies in the power of buzz.

Buzz or word-of-mouth marketing influences more people to buy, or not to buy products and services, than most other forms of marketing. Why is it so powerful? Basically, we have a need to share information as a means of communication and also as a way of understanding the world around us. Often, we base many of our purchasing decisions on information gleaned from friends and well-respected associates. We tend to listen to them more readily then most mass-media messages.

In his book The Anatomy of Buzz, Emanuel Rosen states, most marketing today ignores the power of buzz and tries to influence each customer individually. He believes that buzz travels through invisible networks that link people together. Noise, skepticism and connectivity all influence todays buzz.

As exhibitors you need go no further than the tradeshow floor to find a network that creates a real buzz. It starts prior to the show, gathers momentum at the show, and then slowly dissipates after the show ends. Every exhibitor has the power to influence the buzz. It all depends on product/service quality, marketing savvy and the decisions made.

I recall visiting a telecommunications show a couple of years ago when the buzz on the show floor concerned a Fortune 100 company and major player in the industry, (who shall remain nameless). The talk centered around the image of their booth which wasnt quite up to expectations. The buzz went like this: The ABC Company has gone cheap. They must be having financial problems. Its gossip like this that starts the wheels of the rumor mill turning and can even create havoc on the Stock Market. Remarks like this often have very little bearing on reality, but people make assumptions and decisions based on what they see and hear. Obviously, the originating source of the buzz plays a key role in its basis for truth.

Im sure that you would much prefer any tradeshow buzz to be positive. Since talking about products/services makes economic sense, how can you use the buzz to add to your existing marketing efforts? Ive put together ten guidelines for you to consider:

1. Brainstorm all possible groups of people who might be interested in your products/services. Consider including the media, opinion leaders, influencers, lead users, politicians, analysts, etc. Dont forget chat rooms and newsgroups although buzz still spreads primarily by personal interaction.

2. Research how information spreads among your customers. Ask them how they usually learn about new products/services. Who are their major information sources? Whos information do they value? Youre primarily looking for groups of people rather than individuals. However, dont discount individuals, as they may well be a powerful opinion leader.

3. Develop a clear and concise message highlighting the product/service benefits you want to filter through these different groups. Zero in on your products uniqueness and what it can do, for example, to help save time and money two basic elements most people seek.

4. Think about ways to tap into these groups to spread the word about your products/services. Use these in addition to your existing marketing efforts. Never rely on just one means of connecting with you target audience. Your credibility is enhanced through different marketing mediums. For example, exhibit marketing could include pre-show advertising, at-show sponsorship and post-show, a trade publication article. The more ways people can hear and see you the better.

5. Offer prospects easy ways to try your product/service. For example, the makers of Pictionary gave demos in parks, shopping centers and other gathering places. The tradeshow floor presents excellent opportunities for this.

6. Come up with other creative ideas to enhance tradeshow show demonstrations. What can you give people to take away to remind them of your company, products and positive show experience. Think about something that will help create the buzz. Itll have to be more creative than a keychain or stress ball. The more product-related the better. You want people to remember and talk about you positively!

7. Look at special groups whom you might offer a product discount, a loaner or even for free. Youre looking for groups/individuals where the direct product experience will help spread the word. For example, when FedEx started out, it offered free shipping to show people how their program worked. America Online continuously finds ways to offer hundreds of free hours of trial usage to entice new users. I recently saw a display of free CDs at WalMart.

8. Use press conferences for major announcements, new product introductions, but only if they are truly new or improved, or general industry trends - whats hot and whats not. Realize that editors are interested in timely newsworthy information; industry trends, statistics, new technology or product information. The media get very upset attending a press conference which is poorly organized and where theres nothing newsworthy.

9. Use sneak previews at tradeshows to build anticipation and help create a buzz on the show floor. Give people a fun experience and a behind the scenes view of whats coming. TV and the movies have got this down to a fine art with their coming attractions. Siemens just did this extremely successfully at the recent CTIA show in Las Vegas. They organized a live marketing presentation with a futuristic theme that featured a digital phone prototype. They certainly created a buzz, which had people, including myself inquiring about the products availability.

10. Make use of tradeshows to educate your target audience. People are hungry for information. Investigate opportunities to speak either during the workshop sessions or incorporate an educational session into your display.

The power of buzz far exceeds many conventional marketing vehicles. It is probably the oldest, most well-used and valuable one out there. Look at how you can make it an integral part of your existing marketing plan to influence the voices in your industry.

Blu-ray Media And Covers

Movie covers represent a film and usually work in convincing the consumer to buy. Just what is behind a cover, and how are people making their own?

High Definition is slowly taking the world by storm. When consumers were first introduced to the mind blowing visuals of HD, they were simply amazed. Blu-ray is leading this new innovations with its ability to read HD video. Of course the Blu-ray Associations faced its challenges, having to compete with HD-DVD which also provided the ability to read HD media. After a long race to the finish, HD-DVD developers, Toshiba had no choice but to back out after Blu-ray gained higher levels of support.

Blu-ray discs store much more than regular DVDs and this allows the media to carry high definition video. Blu-Ray technology enables the full support of 720p, 1080i and 1080p High Definition videos. When videos and audios are in High Definition (HD) formats, they have increased clarity and fidelity. High Definition produces such a beautiful picture that it feels like watching a movie in a cinema. The increased fidelity of the sound when played in a 5.1 surround sound system makes watching movies at home more pleasurable. As a result many inidividuals are slowing changing over to Blu-ray. This is a fact made evident by a February 1, 2008 article that shows that Blu-Ray movie titles hold an 80 percent market share for the month of January.

Compared to DVD the selection of movies is low, however you can expect the number of titles available to rise dramatically over the new few years. Warner, along with other movie studios have announced that high definition movies will only be released to the Blu-ray format from May 2008.

Blu-Ray movie titles are more popular than its competition, the HD DVD (High-Definition DVD) as shown by 80 percent of HD movie buyers. The popularity of BD movies may be attributed to the increased clarity of the movies and may also be attributed to the Blu-Ray cover arts that are included when you buy these BD titles.

Blu-Ray covers are the cover art that represents the movie being purchased. The artwork that is found on a Blu-ray case is in many cases responsible for attracting a buyer. Blu-Ray covers usually have the movie title in the front with a cover art that is related to the movie. The front images may also have many screens from the actual movie to preview what the film is about. The front cover is designed for the purpose of attracting a potential buyer and making that buyer want to watch the movie. The rear of a Bly-ray cover presents the synopsis, credits, special features, screen captures and much everything else which is found on a regular DVD cover. Blu-ray technology has captured the market and wowed many with its ability to deliver High Definition visuals.

One has to wonder about borrowers signing up for a new Option ARM (Adjustable Rate Mortgage) with negative amortization and low teaser rates really know what is ahead of them. The slick computer models showing what if scenarios make the case based on given assumptions. The term negative amortization is something that will be in front of their faces real soon.

This was somewhat palatable in a rising market, but now as the market goes sideways or even down and more borrowers are finding themselves upside down while owing more than the property is worth. Much like the movies, one might take it upon himself or herself to honk at title companies, escrow officers or real estate attorneys to try and dissuade anyone from going ahead and signing a new ARM that has negative amortization. A mounted speaker on top of the car could also be employed to spout the warnings Watch Out!. You can be sure puzzled looks would find its way in the direction of the warning, wondering if this person is in their right mind. But, alas, the borrowers sign up anyway.

Fortunately, the borrowers have options. They can pay a minimum payment and let it go negative as the mortgage increases, they can pay a fully indexed interest only payment for a while with no negative amortization, a thirty year fixed payment or a fifteen year fixed payment. Each month the statement is received in the mail the borrowers have the opportunity to chose one of the options. Only the minimum payment option will give the negative amortization. For a suitable and a well financially educated based borrower this might work if there was a place for the money savings such as a business or other safe investment that is yielding a higher rate of return than the negative growth of the mortgage amount. Later on, lump sum payments can be made to offset the negative amortization from the profit gains from the investment. In that case, the money would be working harder in an alternative investment. Baring that, a borrower can be neck deep in financial trouble real quick. Qualifications for this niche product are at the fully indexed rate for debt to income qualifications. Borrowers can protect themselves, to a degree, by dealing with a lender/broker who will squeeze down the margin to a razor thin amount to keep any increases at the absolute lowest incremental amount.

As an example: Borrowers Bill and Linda have a new $300,000.00 Option ARM (Adjustable Rate Mortgage). The index for the first payment is 4.75%. The set margin as outlined in the ARM Disclosure signed and agreed at mortgage settlement is at 3.25%. Thus the fully indexed rate for the first month is the 4.75% index + the margin in 3.25% = 8.00% representing the fully indexed rate. The minimum payment option is at a rate of 1.00%. If this option is selected, the mortgage would go negative by 8.00% - 1.00% = 7.00% on an annual basis. This option would go negative by $300,000.00 x 7.00% = $21,000.00/12 = $1,750.00 negative the first month. Then the new balance is $300,000.00 + $1,750.00 = $301,750.00. This minimum 1.0% payment rate for the first month with this scenario would lead to a payment of $964.92/month with the mortgage amount going up. This is the minimum payment option. The 30-year fixed payment based on the fully indexed rate for the first month would be $2,201.29/month. The 15-year fixed payment based on the fully indexed rate for the first month would be $2,866.96/month. The interest only option for the fully indexed rate is $300,000 x 8.0% = $24,000.00/12 = $2,000/month with no amortization of the loan (no increase either). This again is the scenario with a built in 2.75% margin, which remains constant for the life of the loan. The maximum negative amortization, depending on the mortgage product can be 115% to 125% of the original balance as two of the more recognized run up limits. In this scenario it could go up to $300,000.00 x 115% = $345,000.00 or $300,000.00 x 125% = $375,000.00. Once the selected trigger limits on run up are reached, the trip wire is initiated and the loan will need to be amortized from then on at the fully indexed rate as calculated monthly. House wins. Borrower loses.

Tommy and Tammy are a little more astute and aggressively negotiated a margin of 2.25%. This half point difference in this scenario will be for the life of the loan. The margin is carved in stone and never changes. With the MTA index at 4.75% plus the 2.25% margin then the fully indexed rate is at 7.00% a full 1.00% below the prior example. Right from the get go the $300,000.00 x 1.00% = $3,000.00/12 = $250.00/month less than per month on the running interest meter. Again, the minimum payment at 1% the payment would be $964.92. The same as Bill and Lindas loan scenario. However, the negative amortization would be 7.00% - 1.00% = 6.00%. The original loan amount of $300,000.00 x 6% = $18,000.00/12 = $1,500.00. The new loan balance would be $300,000.00 + $1,500.00 = $301,500.00. Because of the margin difference, Tommy and Tammys loan is a better deal. The 30-year fixed loan for the first month is $1,995.91/month. The 15-year fixed loan for the first month is $2,696.48/month. The interest only option at the 7.00% fully indexed rate would be $300,000.00 x 7.00% = $21,000/12 = $1,750.00/month. This loan scenario would go negative a lot slower than Tommy and Tammys loan.

The two loans are summarized as follows: (*negative amort.)

So if anyone is entertaining an Option ARM they will need to fight like a tiger to get the lowest possible margin as possible. If not deterred by all the warnings of the dangers of an Option ARM product with the audience yelling at the top of their lungs-Watch Out, then a borrower needs to get the lowest possible margin available on the planet. If not, bad news will follow. The next step is to lock into the most stable and reliable index possible available after exhaustive research. The broker/lender can take their fees and compensation on the front end of the mortgage origination and keep the margin as low as possible with this Option ARM product.

In conclusion, if anyone is looking at an Option ARM caution needs to be the keyword to this consideration with eyes wide open with full due diligence. If the borrowers are going to be in the home for a few years and the property is in a slow appreciating market, later resale may be in peril if the minimum payments are made each month. If the borrower is going to be in the property for a longer term, the threat of hitting the trip wire for the maximum loan amount of 115% or 125% will kick in and payments will drastically go up on a forced basis. It should be noted Option ARM products contain at least a 2-year prepayment penalty. This would amount to a six-month interest on 80% of the balance. This loan of $300,000 would be with the Bill and Linda scenario: $300,000.00 x 80% = $240,000 x 8% (or at index at payoff) = $19,200.00 for the whole year or six months would be $9,600.00. The Tommy and Tammy scenario (again index at time of payoff) would be $8,400.00 if either would be paid off in the first two years.

Again borrowers watch out. If only they were listening. When things go bad with this product the credit and all that goes with it hits the fan. Foreclosures have accelerated drastically in this niche product and Congress is holding hearings. Never a good sign.
