How Does Skywriting Work?

SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE. This was the message written in the sky by the wicked witch in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz. Ever since then sky writing has fascinated young and old alike. (Actually the witch's message was done with special effects in a 6 foot by 6 foot glass tank.) But skywriting goes back to 1922 where it was first done in England. That same year advertisers cashed in on the idea and skywriting became famous by Pepsi-Cola who used it from 1931 to 1953.

The movie The Wizard of Oz, a smash hit when it came out in 1939, had a scene where the wicked witch wrote SURRENDER DOROTHY OR DIE in the sky with her broom. How is the smoke made? Skywriting smoke is produced by injecting paraffin oil into the exhaust of the plane. As it heats in the exhaust, the oil produces an environmentally friendly white smoke that forms the letters as it lingers in the air. Of course, the pilot must select when to inject the oil so that part of a letter is formed.

The letters are about a mile tall and the message may be as long as fifteen miles. The drifting smoke only retains a letter for at most 20 minutes so the message must be written quickly and without mistakes. There is no such thing as a smoke eater to erase mistakes! The success of the mission is determined by several factors. First the skill of the pilot. He must be both skilled and artistic. Second, the plane must have sufficient maneuverability and power. The power is partly needed to produce sufficient heat (1500 degrees) to vaporize the paraffin oil. Some recommend planes with at least 450 horsepower engines because they are six times hotter than small plane engines.

Besides these factors, there is the weather. The wind cannot exceed three to five miles per hour. The sky must be nearly clear for the white letters to be visible against the blue sky. Since wind speed may vary at different heights, the planes will fly anywhere from 7000 and 17000 feet. At these heights, the message is visible for thirty miles on either side. Cooler air temperature makes more smoke, but the air temperature cannot exceed 95 degrees. The best months for these conditions are September and October.

The message usually contains four to six letters and it takes one to two minutes to form each letter. A shorter message is more likely to be visible at once. When a message is longer than this, then either the message is never seen together in its entirely, or multiple planes get involved. The two or three pilots coordinate their maneuvers so that their work together will produce the message visible in its entirety for a few minutes before it drifts away.

The American Impact Standard would also be effective under the carpet and pad, but is more suited for hardwood and ceramic tile floors due to its sheer mass. Lets talk about doors for a minute; if you are trying to keep the movie in the home theater, then a hollow core door could be your worst enemy. Most modern bedroom doors are hollow core and do little in the way of soundproofing. Your best bet would be to go to Home Depot or Lowes and purchase a solid core MDF or solid wood door. You could ad an automatic drop down transom seal to the bottom of the door and also a door perimeter seal kit to seals around the door where it closes into the jam. A real soundproof door could cost thousands, with a little time and careful planning; you can get the same results at the cost. The last thing we need to talk about are the windows in your home theater. If neighbors are a concern, then I would suggest building window plugs with the 2 America Mat closed cell vinyl nitrile foam mat. For example, if your window were 3 X 3, you would cut the foam to 31 X 3 1 thus giving the window plug and extra around its entire perimeter. This extra will help to hold the window plug tightly into the window frame much like a cork in a bottle. If the window is 4 or more on either dimension, it is suggested that the window plug be glued to a backer board, something like wood paneling or Luaan. The film's story is based on the life of two factional groups in the village Karlapoodi of Guntur district. Sivaramakrishna (Sathyaraj) leads a group and still faces opposition Trimurthulu (Chalapathi Rao) and his son. On the other hand, Srinu (Adith) is a young aggressive Sivaramakrishna disciple who falls for his daughter Gauri (Dimple Chopde).
Twist in the tale arises when Sivaramakrishna comes from knowing the love story of his daughter. This is also the time when the enemy decides to attack Sivaramakrishna group. Rest of the story is how the love story of Gauri and Srinu survives all these problems, and what happens to gang wars in the village.

Satyaraj is the major asset of the film and gives a decent performance. His expressions and screen presence during the height is good. Adith Arun is decent in his role, but gets limited scope to perform. Dimple Chopde seems apt as a beautiful town and gels well with the story.

Singing and music, in general, can just make your soul soar to new heights or bring you to the lowest low. There is something that makes even the sad parts feel good in a way. Musicals can be very cathartic that way.

But, there is something very different about plays without singing that can be just as moving. Living with and through the things that the characters go through on stage is so amazing. You get sucked into the circumstances of the play and go along for the roller coaster ride, the arc of the show. And I think that a truly good piece of theater is one in which all of the characters are sympathetic. What I mean is that there is no one that is completely "evil" and no one that is completely "good." This makes me think more about their reasons and rationales. It is more thought provoking and causes me to empathize more. In this kind of play, there are no easy answers. And, hopefully, it causes viewers to discuss it with the people that they saw the play with, asking questions like "who was right?" or "what would you have done in that person's situation?"

Sometimes, I become so attached to characters, I talk about them as if they are real. It's usually at that point that I realize how good the play is. If I am imagining the characters in situations outside the play itself, then I know that the playwright and the actors have done such an amazing job bringing the character to life, that I can think about what they would do in certain situations. This, I think, is the point of theater. To make the audience think and to make them question their society, their morals, and their values.
