Movie Review - Ikiru

Ikiru, translated "To Live", is the masterpiece of the great Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa. It is very different from the Samurai films for which he is most famous in the West, but it is undoubtedly one of the greatest films ever committed to celluloid.

Produced in 1952, Ikiru tells the story of Kanji Watanabe (Takeshi Shimura), a civil servant who, as the film begins, discovers that he has stomach cancer, and only 6 months to live. His life has been defined by his job, one of soul-sucking monotony and inefficient bureaucracy. Kurosawa demonstrates just how ineffective this bureaucracy is by an amusing scene early in the film, where a group of women petition the department of public affairs to clean up a stagnant pool in their neighborhood. They are shunted from public affairs to engineering, and then further up the bureaucracy, until, eventually, they end up back where they began, having accomplished nothing.

The plight of these women in many ways parallels the life of Mr. Watanabe, who has dedicated himself fully to the bureaucracy. Indeed, he has not missed a single day of work in nearly 30 years, and yet, he realizes, he too has accomplished nothing. Watanabes son is ungrateful of the sacrifices his father has made, though the film points out that the son never asked for them. Mr. Watanabes life is empty and sad, and it is only through the revelation that he is dying, that he is able to truly live for the first time.

He goes out for a night on the town, with the help of a curious stranger who is willing to help him learn to spend his money. A young woman co-worker, who needs his seal so that she can resign, unknowingly helps him continue his journey. Watanabe admires her zest for life just looking at her "warms him up" - and he desires more than anything to understand how to live as she does before he dies.

Takeshi Shimura, a long time Kurosawa collaborator provides a nuanced and touching performance as Watanabe, far removed from his most famous role as Kambei, in Seven Samurai. Indeed, Shimura is able to effectively conveying not only the characters physical pain, but also his emotional pain, and Mr. Watanabes transition from broken despair to a hopeful sense of purpose is entirely believable and engrossing.

As one would expect from a master filmmaker such as Kurosawa, the film is beautifully shot, and the storytelling is impeccable as the director deftly uses a series of flashbacks to tell his story. The pace is very deliberate and ponderous, but never boring.

Akira Kurosawa is certainly one of the great directors in the history of cinema, and he made many more films throughout his career. Many of those films were great in themselves, but Ikiru, with its touching and poignant story, and skilled storytelling, is truly his masterpiece.

Not stopping at this, he then proceeds to slap and shove the old man around.

Holy cow! Pause. Rewind. Replay. Now that was a Ford India showroom and the car was a Mondeo.

Now you know why the Accord sells so much and the Mondeo finds it tough reaching double-digit sales. They beat up people at Ford India dealerships, not a statement that I ratify, but precisely the unfortunate message that came out of this movie sequence. The movie in question was Baghban, which was released a few years back and was a moderate success.

On a serious note, my friends in Maraimalai Nagar in Chengalpattu down south wouldn't even have noticed the movie, and even if they had seen it and felt infuriated, they could hardly have done anything about the issue. For, when once a movie with such a thoughtless sequence is released, the damage is already done and there is no point in raking the issue. Actually, raking the issue is just snowballing it into a controversy and getting the movie more eyeballs and ensuring more damage to the product. Most often the long reaction time of the judiciary to take up such issues will see to it that major damage has already been done to your company's repute even before the court can decide on stopping the screening or making necessary changes to the movie. Anyways, it is difficult to raise any objections against a movie on grounds of misrepresentation of products or a company and be taken seriously.

Ironically, I have a feeling that the director didn't even think twice before going ahead with the sequence. Ford India can take comfort in the fact that they are not the only victims of this Bollywood automotive ignorance. Most of us will remember the Road' sequence where a Tata truck catches up with a Tata Safari.

That's why they sell more trucks than Safaris.

I guess they would have accelerated the Safari Petrol programme after the sequence in Road came out. Such apathy towards, otherwise sound vehicles, has been common in Bollywood movies with numerous sequences of dogs, monkeys, horses, hero-on-a-cycle, hero-on-a-tonga, hero-on-a-bullock-cart and even hero-barefoot chasing sleek, fast cars and catching them, much to the horror of automobile marketing executives across the country. read more

What exactly do movie ratings mean?  Is a movie thats rated PG suitable for your four-year-old?  How about a PG-13 movie?  Should a child really be 13 in order to see it?

The Motion Picture Association of America has five official ratings for movies. These are:

• G for general audiences
• PG for parental guidance suggested
• PG-13 for parental guidance strongly suggested for children under the ages of 13
• R for restricted to children under the ages 18 unless accompanied by adults
• NC-17 for no one 17 and under will be permitted into the theater.

Youre most likely to G rating on strictly childrens movies. These will be movies that have happy endings and are completely without violence or any sexually suggestive situations and language. These movies are absolutely safe to lets children of any age watch.

PG movies are more along the lines of a family film, something that both mom and dad and the kids will enjoy. PG films may have some low-level violence such as a fistfight, mildly sexually suggestive situations such as a kissing scene or is slightly stressful situations such as when the bad guy has the good guy in a tough spot. Most children over the age of eight are more than capable of handling situations they see on screen in PG films. Children under the age of eight may be either frightened by or unable to understand some of the situations that happened in a PG film, depending on the emotional age of the individual child.

PG-13 movies are meant for a slightly older audience than PG films. In PG-13 films you are likely to find higher levels of violence such as gunfights and blood, more sexually suggestive situations, though not overly sexual, such as long involved kissing or some fondling and more suspenseful and intense situations. PG-13 may also have explicit language such as curse words or descriptive sex words. Parents should think carefully and perhaps preview the movie before taking children under the age of 13 to the movie. R movies are meant for adults. Rated R movies may have extreme violence, sexually explicit situations, extremely intense situations or a lot of extreme language. R rated films may also show drug use or more serious criminal activity. Children under the age of 16 should not be permitted without adults. Technically, movie theaters are suppose to ID children and verify that they have an adult with them but most of the time this does not happen. Parents should probably not take children under the age of 10 to these movies. For children between the ages of 10 and 16, parents should give serious consideration as to whether or not the child is mature enough to handle situations found within the movie.

NC-17 is a relatively new rating. It was created to replace the generic X rating. It is unusual to find a movie in theaters with a rating of NC-17. Perhaps not too much of it should be expected, since the purpose of a movie is meant to entertain in various ways (acting, glamour, music, cinematography, video editing etc) apart from a good storyline. If people were to keep expecting just good stories from movies, they might as well read a good novel instead.

Then again, the director should not have neglected the story so much to the extent that critics come up with endless lists to highlight all the flaws which are so apparent throughout the movie.

Story:

As mentioned before, the story is not really paid attention to. A mysterious their, who calls himself Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan), goes literally around the world stealing priceless items in highly sophisticated ways. The purpose of his behaviour is not explained. A hot pursuit by an ACP, Assistant Commissioner of Police (played by Abhishek Bachan), then follows and along the way, Mr. A finds himself a voluntary partner Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai) whom he later finds out that she is sent to spy on him. She finds out later that she has fallen for him in a typical Bollywood fashion and joins hands with him after that.

The star appeal of each actor has been highlighted through their respective introductory scenes which may seem unnecessary to most viewers. In fact, most of the scenes are unnecessary but that is because story is not the focus of this movie at all.

Screenplay:

Fun and entertainment are primarily the main attention in this movie. This movie is taken in a rather commercially appealing way right from the start till the very end. Probably this is where its success is attributed to.

Eye candy supplied by Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu are part of the fun factor which is simply meant to divert the audiences attention from wondering what the story is about.

Uday Chopra is the main entertainment factor as he does his comic antics to keep a smile on the audiences faces.

Cinematography:

Cinematography is awesome. Every robbery scene is well taken care by the camera angles and shots.

One is inclined to wonder why, whenever the name of Jesus Christ is mentioned, the name has the power to generate such controversy. Over 2000 years later, the name of Jesus still stirs up people, especially when the focus is the release of a major motion picture depicting the last 12 hours of His life.
I know why. Those last 12 hours are the reason He came to this earth in the first place. He came to redeem us back to God the Father by willingly laying down His life for us. By taking the punishment we deserve for our sin and thereby granting us a pardon from God the Father. Yes, I said He laid down His own life. Not one human being on this earth had the power to take the life of Jesus. He gave us His life so that we might have eternal life in Him.
You say, but the movie depicts Him being brought up on false charges by the Pharisees, and wrongly and savagely beaten and scourged by Roman soldiers. As if that wasnt enough to kill someone, he was then forced to carry a cross weighing 300 pounds up a hill. Granted he had help from Simon of Cyrene, but could you have even been able to lift YOURSELF up after enduring such torture and carry a 300 pound cross as far as he did ALONE? All the while being continually pushed, hit, spat upon, and whipped by the soldiers and for what? For us, humankind. Yes, humans did that to Him. However, they could not have, had the power not been given to them from God the Father AND Jesus obedience to the Father and willingness to do so.
Some have said this movie is anti-Semitic and they said that BEFORE even seeing it. In fact that was said BEFORE the movie was even released. Some have said it depicted the Roman soldiers as ruthless and brutal. Guess what? The soldiers WERE ruthless and brutal. The whole human race is and can be ruthless and brutal. Anti-Semitic? No, it is not. How can I say that? Because, first of all Jesus was a Jew. So was His mother. So were the apostles and most of His followers. The first Christians were Jews.
Some have said that Christians, and I am one, are promoting anti-Semitism by supporting and promoting this movie. You see, that is just not possible because those who ARE truly Christian, cannot be anti anyone. It would be a complete oxymoron to say I am a Christian and then be a racist. Anyone who is truly a Christian and abides in Jesus Christ will not and cannot be against any race. Like Bill Gallatin, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of the Fingerlakes, NY said, there arent any races other than the human race, just different nationalities. No, neither Jews, nor Romans put Jesus on the cross. Our sin was the reason He willingly laid down His life for us ALL. Why? Because He loves us, thats why and He wants us with Him for eternity. He became the perfect, sacrificial Lamb who laid down His life for our transgressions.
The movie shows Jesus finally making it up that rocky, craggy hill to Calvary. He is swollen, torn, and bleeding over his entire body. He has already lost massive amounts of blood due to the horrendous beating and scourging He endured. He had to have been in unbelievable agony and yet He is shown lying down on the cross of His own accord. He did not struggle and fight as all the others who were crucified. Your reply might be, How could He, he was already almost dead by then! Then tell me, if that is so, how did He live yet another six hours hanging on a cross? He WILLED it, thats how!
Many have said how unbelievably violent this movie is. Hmmm, funny thing to be said when most of the movies, video games, and television programs coming out these days are extremely violent; not to mention the Internet. Such as? Movies: Pulp Fiction, Bad Boys II, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Kill Bill, True Romance -the list is endless. Video games: Carjacked, Assassins, Hitman, to name just a few of the endless supply there. Television: Third Watch, NYPD Blue, CSI, etc., and that is just on regular channels cable and satellite have endless violence, explicit sex, etc., and that is okay with most people!
Yes, the movie is violent but I dont think that is why so many are coming out of the movie in shock, sobbing, and reeling from an experience unlike any other movie theyve seen. It is because we know in our souls, that our sin caused this horrifying torture and death to be necessary. Mel Gibson makes us feel as though we are actually in ancient Jerusalem watching this event unfold before our very eyes.
Was it bloody? You bet it was thats the point: the shed blood of Jesus for us all.
It may have been extremely difficult to watch, but the ending gives us all eternal hope in Jesus Christ.
Will I see this movie again? Yes, but not yet. Its too soon but someday, yes I will.
Does this movie leave people with questions? For those who dont know the scriptures, I hope so. I hope so enough that they will seek out the answers in the only place theyll find them the Bible.
