How a Hacker Developed a Winning Golf Swing

This is about a business client of mine who had used Mind Movies successfully to help him develop his career. He then asked me if it would be possible to develop a golf Mind-Movie which would help a real 'hacker' like him to develop a good golf swing.

I'm probably erring on the side of understatement when I say that Bob was a hacker. By his own admission he was: one of those players who've never really had a proper golf swing.

The way he told it, his main concern was to give the ball a 'good whack'. As a result of his lack of technique, Bob had spent much of the ten years that he'd been a golfer searching for his ball in woods and long grass. High scores and a high handicap seemed to be his inevitable fate.

Bob and I first met when his employer asked me to coach him to develop his business and leadership skills. When we were working on 'communication' I used a technique that I call Mind-Movies. I taught Bob how to groove pictures into his imagination which showed him making successful presentations.

Developing Screenplay Ideas ... My well runneth --- in many directions!

Recently, I started a screenwriting and movie-making group here in Las Vegas. Our objective was to begin at, well, the beginning of the process and work all the way through to an edited movie. Sounds easy? Yes! Is it really? Not at all.

The one thing I ran into at the very beginning was the problem of demonstrating the development of an idea into something that could be used as screenplay material. The big question is, "what's the difference between regular material and screenplay material?" The only answer I could come up with was, "a beginning, a middle, and an end." They looked at me like I was kidding, but actually, I'm not.

Put simply, a screenplay is a dramatic story told with visuals and dialogue. The screenplay describes the actions, the environment, the dialogue, and the situations that move the story forward. Screenplays have a formula and a format that has been in place for many decades. Yet, the beginning screenwriter sometimes misses this point. I ran into one fellow some months ago who was writing a screenplay that was "325 pages" long! After further discussion, he began to realize that, instead of writing a screenplay, he had a novel with a story that meandered without end.

You can use any old idea for your story, but have a point. Don't just write for the sake of writing as the story will meander around into a traffic jam. If you have an idea, define a theme or objective for the story. What's the point? What is the main character's purpose in "life"?

Life? A character's life? Indeed, the character does have a life in the world you create, but a screenplay is not "real life". It's a metaphor of real life presented in such a way as to represent a particular theme. To write about a real life situation, you have to dissect the situation and find the underlying theme. Then, using that theme as a guideline, you must reassemble the original idea to best represent the theme. Indeed, some aspects of the true-story might be fictionalized to drive the story toward the point.

For example, my wife is working on a screenplay about medical debauchery in Nevada. After a few passes, she began to realize that the story roamed around in circles because of the many facets of the topic. After much coaching, she began to realize that she had to define one particular point and aim the story at it. As a side-effect, the physical issues of the story would be the driving force that leads the plot around to reach "the point".

After writing and reading screenplays over the years, I've given some pointers to folks that usually help them redefine and direct their stories to a solid point. One of the main problems, which I reiterate here, is that you have to "define a point". For example, we might come up with an idea that has a bunch of "cool" actions and situations. We then try to write a story to include these ideas because we want them to be in the story. But, this approach will usually fail because --- what is the point? Define a point, a theme, an objective that encompasses the feeling and direction of these "cool" actions and situations and aim your story in that direction.

To help to resolve the "meandering" problem and the evolution of the story toward the point, create a story where your main character is just this faceless being that quickly and easily achieves his goal. No dialogue. No rhyme or reason. They just reach their goal without effort or conflict. This is boring, but it creates a basis for the story.

Once you're satisfied with this straight-line story, add a specific characteristic that makes this goal have meaning to the main character. This would also mean that you would have to modify the environment and characteristics of your main character such that, to him, this goal means something. Now, with a call to action, he chases his goal with fervor!

Now, add in an obstacle that keeps him from achieving this goal. This would mean that somewhere in the main character's history, this obstacle came into being, but is now an obvious problem in his goal achievement. It could be a character flaw, a villain, or any issue that blocks the main character from his goal. How does he overcome this obstacle? Again, a character modification and backstory is required to show his ability to overcome this obstacle as well as some level of action to do so.

Once the core story is solid and directed, you add a conflict, a twist, and a resolution, one step at a time, until you begin to see your character and story evolve. With a story in hand, you can now add your dialogue to assist in the forward movement of the story, but only as needed. With this approach, you can slowly build your story while keeping your "point" in mind and following the formula for a solid screenplay.

It is essential that you keep an eye on the theme and objective of the story and that you work in that direction, otherwise your story will wander aimlessly. Keep it tight, start late, leave early, and follow the three-act formula. In the end, your screenplay will have the solid story and professional appeal that producers are looking for in creating today's interesting, original movies! --- About the Author ---

Is it really hard to imagine teens sending and receiving more text messages than their adult counterparts? Just watch a teen grab a hold of a mobile phone and do some rapid-fire texting, all while talking to you, Twittering, listening to their iPod, and watching a movie on cable. They are the quintessential multitaskers!

Sending or receiving an average of 3,339 texts a month, or roughly 1 message for every 10 minutes? Is that even possible? Yes, according to the latest Nielsen study. The company analyzed mobile usage among American teens and some of the figures are simply eye-popping, to say the least. Check this out:

13-17 year old teen females send and receive 4,050 texts per month.

18-24 year olds send and receive 1,630 texts per month.

Texting currently ranks high among teens most preferred mobile activity. In fact, 43 percent admit that it is their main reason for living buying a cell phone in the first place.

In 2008, CTIA and Harris Interactive released the results of a study wherein 47 percent of US teens (54 percent if female) claim it would be the end of their life existence social life if they would be deprived of their cell phone, while 57 percent say their mobile phones improved their life in general. Texting has become so much a part of teens daily life that nearly half of those surveyed swear they could do it with their eyes closed.

Of course, if you ask other teens how much other forms of social media mean to them they would probably say the same thing about instant messaging, Twittering, commenting on YouTube videos of Miley Cyrus, playing games on their mobile phones, ad infinitum, which prompts us to ask: Are teens simply voracious technology users able to multitask with lightning speed or do they simply have too much time on their hands?

Teens have become so attached to their mobile buddies and dependent on texting that parents started fearing that it would stunt the development of their social skills? Mere paranoia? Not really. According to the same study by CTIA and Harris Interactive, teens regard texting and talking as the same and spend an equal amount of time with both. In fact, some even prefer texting because it provides an option to multitask, avoid face to face interaction, and because texting is more fun.

That is not all. There is also the issue of distracted teenage driving of which texting is one of the major culprits. In a November 2009 report by Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., 1 out of 3 respondents admitted texting while driving. And in the September issue of Seventeen magazine, a survey of 2,000 teen drivers revealed that a third admitted to being involved in a near-crash because they or the driver was distracted. Distracted driving accounts for 16 percent of all fatal crashes.

Its role is neither stupid nor serious. It was completely left halfway. Surprisingly, Kamna Ranaut has solid debut. Apart from glamorous, it worked well too. It can be a good actress with the right choice of films in the future. Shakalaka Shankar and his snake comedy is something to celebrate. The rest of the cast has done justice to their roles. But unfortunately none of them remain in our mind the moment we walk in the theater. This also includes Nagineedu!

Techinical Team

G.Eshwer Reddy has weak leadership and failed to control the narrative. Obviously, he lost it as he was forced to stuff comedies and unwanted songs. Each song is an obstacle to the peak flow of the story. Forced comic episodes not even evoke smile on our faces. Scenario is even more pathetic. Things go haywire and the whole movie is like watching commercials during the movie break. Inexperience was completely obvious. Dialogues are witty and they are the backbone of the film. The music of Sai Kartheek is below par. In fact, the songs act as barricades. Furthermore there is no linear narrative between the first half and the second half. The production values are good. But everything falls flat when things become pathetic scenario. Cinematography was clean and simple. Nothing more to boast.

"Gothika," starring Halle Berry, Robert Downey, Jr., Charles S. Dutton, John Carroll Lynch, Bernard Hill, Penelope Cruz and Dorian Harewood; is a spellbinding film!

Some critics have entirely missed the context of this storyline, and have given this movie a bad review, I beg to differ. "Gothika," the newest production from Dark Castle Entertainment is the culmination of clairvoyance and poltergeist entertwined into one spectacular ride of an individual's innermost emotions and physical reactions.

Halle Berry stars as Miranda Grey, a criminal psychologist working in Woodward Penitentiary for Women. Counseling "Chloe," (played by Penelope Cruz), Dr. Grey, in her medical expertise, does not fully grasp Chloe's rantings and ravings. As she leaves work on a stormy night, she runs off an embankment, avoiding a nude girl standing in the rainsoaked highway.

Coming to her senses, she awakens to find herself as an inmate in Woodward, herself. Dr. Pete Graham (Robert Downey, Jr.) another staff psychiatrist and coworker of Grey, attempts to decipher Miranda's mindset and how she violently 'murdered' her own husband, Douglas (Charles S. Dutton) in the preceding three days. Having no recollection of the ensuing events after her car accident, Miranda is traumatized and nearly catatonic.

An unlikely friend, Chloe helps Dr. Grey to realize that neither of the two are insane, but are driven by an outside force beyond one's wildest imagination. As an open channel to clairvoyance and a medium to spiritual entities, Miranda soon discovers her husband's deep, dark secret.

A rivoting film that will leave you breathless and enlightened to clairvoyance in its most harrowing form. I rate this movie 3.5 Stars.

"The Secret" May Have Some Problems

"The Secret" is a best-selling movie and book about something called the Law of Attraction. From a Christian perspective, the movie has a couple problems.

There is a lot of fervor going on right now about the movie "The Secret." There are those who think that it's the greatest thing to come along in centuries and everybody should buy it. And there are those who look at it as evil incarnate and tell us that we should run away as fast as we can. And to be fair, I'm sure that most people are somewhere in between those two extremes.

As I Christian I do have one major problem with the movie. The idea that "the universe" is an all-powerful genie that will grant us our every wish clearly disagrees with the Bible. Scripture tells us that it is a loving, all-powerful God, and not some nebulous, impersonal force, who cares for us and provides all that we need.

When I consider the message of the movie from the standpoint of God's word, the problem is that it appeals to something Jesus called the "deceitfulness of riches". Which is not that we aren't supposed to have wealth, in fact it's quite the contrary. God has provides everything we will ever need or want, and Ephesians 3:20-21 tells us that He even gives us "super-abundance" above and beyond anything that we dare ask for or imagine.

The issue isn't wealth, but the false idea that it's really all up to us, that it is the power of our minds or our abilities that brings the riches to us. In Deuteronomy 8:18 says, "But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today." In the second half of John 10:10 Jesus tells us, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." The promise is there, but it is God who has given us the ability to receive wealth, and not our thoughts.

One of the other problems with "The Secret" is its marketing. And I think that there is a real advantage to saying that there is this information, a secret, that has been hidden and suppressed for centuries, and if you could just get your hands on it, your life will be nothing short of miraculous. In some ways it's great marketing, and shows that they understand their target market very well.

The problem comes from the fact that you are speaking to people who believe in scarcity and lack. If you look at it from a Law of Attraction standpoint, the marketing is attracting people who are happy to hear that the reason they are broke, sick, and married to a jerk is because wicked rich people and the evil church have conspired to hide something from them. But now, thanks to the marvels of modern communications and a few brave people who dare to expose it, the "secret" is out.

The truth is that this isn't a secret, and abundance has been available to every person on the face of this earth from the beginning of creation. The marketing creates a problem that the movie then has to try and solve, because it speaks directly to people who feel that they've been cheated and lied to.

I certainly don't want to imply that there haven't been conspiracies. But people who don't understand abundance and who, in that sense don't understand the "secret", have perpetrated those conspiracies. Because if they had understood it, they would have realized that prosperity is available to everyone and that there was no reason to hoard the wealth. Had they really known the truth, they would not have been the greedy, evil people that we often think of when we think about the rich.

The simple fact is that everything we could ever want is available to us. No one can keep us from it, and there is no hidden truth. What we do need to understand is that God is the source of everything in our lives, but He can't give us something against our will or beliefs. In order for God to pour out His blessings on us, we must first understand that they are there for us. And once we comprehend that truth with all our hearts, and give Him the praise that He is due for pouring out His grace and goodness on us, our lives will be truly miraculous.

And the Oscar for Best Movie Goes To--- Crash of Racial Stereotypes and Humanitarian Babel.

Last year we saw Crash running away with the Oscar, and was acclaimed for not only the best movie of the year, but for its exposure of race relations, bias and stereotypes in American society. Again this year, Hollywood, has by accident, created incredible teaching tools that can be used to raise our unconscious biases and stereotypes which can lead us to recognize unique, individual features of others.

Crash is a movie that makes us take a second and third look at our own biases. Crash involves several stories with an underlying theme of biases and stereotypes that exist in today's society: the white veteran cop who has a bias against Blacks, a Caucasian gun shop owner who has a bias against Persians, a Caucasian District Attorney's wife who has a stereotype of Latinos, Black car thieves who have a bias against Caucasians, a Black police detective who has a stereotype of Hispanics, and the list goes on. Each of the characters who acted upon their own biases is transformed in this movie to a hero, when they set aside their bias and get to know the others' uniqueness.

This year, we see a universal view of this transformation in Babel where people from different countries are transformed from acting on stereotypes to embracing people for whom they are. Will Babel follow on the heals of Crash and win the Oscar for best picture? Babel begins in the remote sands of the Moroccan desert, a rifle shot rings out--detonating a chain of events that will illicit biases and stereotypes such as the shooting of the American Tourist in Morocco is thought to be caused by a terrorist followed by the hunt for the perpetrator, a nanny illegally crossing into Mexico with two American children in order to engage into a night of partying and drinking at her son's wedding, and a Japanese hearing-impaired teen rebel who is shunned by peers because of her disability. Separated by clashing cultures and sprawling distances, each of these four disparate groups of people is nevertheless hurtling toward a shared destiny of isolation and grief caused, in part, by a stereotype, but in the end are reconnected through understanding and appreciation of the others' uniqueness.

Researchers have found that human being's have unconscious biases. Studies conducted by Stanford University, have concluded that even when we think we are compensating for our bias, it is not something we can easily remove or factor out of our decisions because it operates unconsciously. We are far better at spotting bias in others than in ourselves. Researchers in the Stanford University study concluded that there is an assumption that our own golden rule of objectivity works well for ourselves- but others' rules do not work for them. The Bias Blind Spot: Perception of Bias in Self Versus Others (2002) The same person who is fairly objective when judging himself or herself may be highly biased when assessing others or vice versa. And contrary to expectations, a successful career built on making carefully reasoned decisions may only reinforce the illusion of objectivity, for example attorneys.

We obtain biases and stereotypes from our surroundings, family, friends, neighbors, music, television, movies and what we read, as well as our own experiences. These experiences begin when we are very young children. The rules from our culture are not what is written but are learned from those around us, and as children we accept these unwritten rules without question. In order to eliminate a bias, we have to begin to raise the unconscious to the conscious level and begin to recognize our biases. Self awareness of how we react to "others" is vital to breaking conflict generating patterns caused by a bias. We should not be intimidated by engaging in a discussion regarding biases and stereotypes. We should recognize that familiar scripts do not apply, and modify our communication behaviors accordingly. Attention must be paid to the unique, individual features of others.

How can movies, like Crash and Babel, be used to help us get in touch with our unconscious biases? Do not be intimidated by engaging in a discussion regarding the biases and stereotypes that are portrayed in these movies. Explore the transformations that occur with each character as they begin to set aside their stereotypes of the other and they begin to recognize the unique and individual features of others. Begin to pay attention to how we communicate with the ethnic and racial groups that are depicted in the Movies. Broaden our understanding and enhance our sensitivity toward these races and ethnicities. Avoid generalizing about a culture based on past information or observations, apply information only to the situation in which you receive it. Make opportunities to interact with people with different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and abilities. Finally realize that transforming attitudes and behaviors can be challenging and takes time. Crash and Babel were not filmed in a day.

Instead, Plan argues that the best way to help is to combine monthly sponsorship subscriptions so that there is enough in total to afford worthwhile projects across a range of sectors including education, health, child protection, child participation, economic security and water and sanitation.
Each child is encouraged to participate in decisions about which projects to prioritise and to be involved in their execution. Donors enjoy seeing the children they individually sponsor regain their childhood and grow into healthy, well balanced adults. Letters and photographs are still hugely effective in helping sponsors relate to the children they are helping and the projects in which they are involved. The highlight of any sponsorship is understandably a visit by the sponsors to meet their sponsored children in the country in which they live.
