I've often been on the receiving end of someone who has cared enough to dosomething really nice for me without being asked or even knowing who I am. AndI return the favor many times over. In this day and age, people want morepersonal connection, as technology and our fast-paced world typically drive usapart. Don't you find there's nothing worse than trying to have meaningfulshared experiences while on the run? It's like catching glimpses of what'sreally important in life - the time we spend with each other and the ways we loveand support each other.

Aswomen, we have an innate sense of giving, so in many ways, we are programmed tonaturally pay it forward. Here are some thoughts on how you can make aconscious effort in your everyday life to make a difference to those around youby paying it forward:

1. Mentor ayoung woman. The world can seem a little scary to our female teenagers andyoung women. Their families may be a good source of support but as they growand start to become who they are, they can use all the guidance they can get tounderstand life and make choices that will serve them well today and in thefuture. Do you have a younger sister in high school, a niece in college thatyou cangive your time and advice to? Is there ayounger colleague at work you could take under your wing? As well, there are a lot of community organizations like BigSisters that are ideal for helping our younger counterparts.

2. Perform a random act of kindness. This concept can sometimes make usthink we need to get on board with a majorly important cause like helping thehomeless. But little acts can still go a long way. Your neighborhood and yourcommunity are all great places to start. Do you know of an elderly neighbor whostruggles with getting to the grocery store? Maybe you can organize someone totake them (if you don't have time). Next time you're on the bus and someonedoesn't have enough change to make the fare, pay it for them. Even just helpingsomeone reach the top shelf of the pasta aisle in the grocery store fits thebill!

3. Become a Volunteer. Volunteering is one of the most recognized waysto pay it forward. Oftentimes volunteering in an area of personal interest canbe very rewarding and satisfying. Do you have a hobby you can share withsomeone? If you're a rower, offer to help the local rowing club to publicizetheir events or be the one in charge of the inventory. Love to dance, garden,or read history books? Whatever your interest, there is bound to be a groupthat could use your help. But again, you don't have to go the group route. Youcan find connections with like-minded people in so many places; at work, at thenight school course you're taking, at the gym, etc. Just offering to help oneperson get ahead with what they want to accomplish has plenty of pay it forwardstyle!

Usually the first thing that pops into someones mind when they think about marketing is, I've got to place an ad. Place a few ads and soon your marketing budget has totally dried up. Statistics say that someone must see your ad six times in the same publication before thinking of using your business. If its a weekly or monthly publication, that could be six weeks to six months down the road, and you can't afford to wait that long!In order for the public to find your field of dreams, here are ten inexpensive ways to get started:

1. Define your USP--­your Unique Selling Proposition--­and use it in everything that you do. Make sure your customer knows what it is that you do that is unique to you and your business. Don't make them struggle to answer the question of why they should do business with you instead of your competitor.

2. Create joint ventures with other businesses that complement yours. For example, if youre a real estate agent, team up with a cleaning service, an interior decorator, and a personal chef to offer a nice packaged deal to a new home buyer.

3. Stress the benefits of what you do, not the product or service. Theres a great story thats passed around about the worlds most successful insurance salesman, who, when asked what he did for a living, responded, I buy life assurance. Most people responded, What do you mean? to which he replied, I buy life assurance for my clients at the best possible price. Would you like me to buy some for you? Make your potential customer think, I've got to get that!4. Become newsworthy! Send out media releases to announce a new service or product or sponsorship of a charity event. Create an event or a special day. Link what you do to an existing trend or news event. Talk about your personal story in the business, i.e. if you went broke and bounded back, started to create one product and ended up with another, etc. Issue an award or give something away. Conduct a survey and report the results. Write a letter to the editor.

5. Talk to your customers. Call 5 previous customers and find out what they liked and didn't like about their dealings with you, and how you might better serve them in the future. Have them write testimonials that you can use. Ask and reward them for referrals.

6. Love what you do and become a model of what youre selling. If you don't absolutely love what you do and feel passionate about it, your customers are going to see right through you and not be convinced to buy what you are offering. For example, if youre a car mechanic and your shop sits on a parking lot full of clunkers that don't run, why would anyone hire you to repair their car? Or, if youre a landscaper and your lawn is full of weeds and crabgrass, who wants to hire you to beautify their yard? If you don't truly feel passionate about your business and become a living model of that business to everyone you meet, then find another business!

7. Network, network, network! Join organizations, such as Chambers of Commerce, professional groups, civic groups, etc. and any type of organization to which your target market might belong. Attend community events like business open-houses or neighborhood picnics. Sales master Joe Girard lives by his Law of 250, which states that everyone knows about 250 people well enough to invite to their wedding or to be in attendance at their funeral. Lesson: Perhaps the person youre speaking with isnt interested in what you offer, but theres a good chance s/he knows someone who is ­250 of them!

8. Use attention-getting devices -- make yourself visible. Always have business cards on hand to distribute. Have a t-shirt personalized with your business name and wear it when you run errands. Wear an outfit or uniform that shows the world who you are. UPS has taken their identity as seen in their brown trucks and uniforms and embraced it with the tag line in their current commercials, "What can brown do for you?"

9. Talk and teach. Approach local organizations about being a guest speaker at their next meeting. Give a workshop that is open to public and is low-cost/no-cost for participants and discuss a particular aspect of your business, or demonstrate what you do. Offer them valuable information, but leave them hungry for more. For example, a financial planner might offer a free seminar called, Planning for Retirement as a Thirty-something or a bank loan officer might offer a workshop in conjunction with a real estate agency called, Everything a First-Time Homebuyer Needs to Know But is Too Scared to Ask. Or, work with your local college or recreation department and get paid to teach what you know.

10. Implement 5 a day. Make a list of all the creative ways you can market your business, and implement 5 of them per day.

Is it really hard to imagine teens sending and receiving more text messages than their adult counterparts? Just watch a teen grab a hold of a mobile phone and do some rapid-fire texting, all while talking to you, Twittering, listening to their iPod, and watching a movie on cable. They are the quintessential multitaskers!

Sending or receiving an average of 3,339 texts a month, or roughly 1 message for every 10 minutes? Is that even possible? Yes, according to the latest Nielsen study. The company analyzed mobile usage among American teens and some of the figures are simply eye-popping, to say the least. Check this out:

13-17 year old teen females send and receive 4,050 texts per month.

18-24 year olds send and receive 1,630 texts per month.

Texting currently ranks high among teens most preferred mobile activity. In fact, 43 percent admit that it is their main reason for living buying a cell phone in the first place.

In 2008, CTIA and Harris Interactive released the results of a study wherein 47 percent of US teens (54 percent if female) claim it would be the end of their life existence social life if they would be deprived of their cell phone, while 57 percent say their mobile phones improved their life in general. as an "expert." It's also a subtle way of getting your message
out , well let's be honest here...it's free advertising. (I'll show

The "Tips List" is the easiest article to write, which of course is
why they are so popular. Each tip consists of around 2-4 sentences,

From there you write a sentence outlining the tip and 2-4 sentences
to explain each tip.

Once you write a tips list that is current and focuses on a new idea
or new concept, well champ..."you're in there" because everyone
will be interested in reading it.

Step-By-Step Tutorial

Another "bang on" form of article that is ALWAYS read. If "step-by-step"
scares you a little (I may be wrong here, but I thought I heard you suck in
your breath there...) then how about refering to it as the "How To" article?

Everyone and their dog wants to know "How To" do something. We
want to have instructions broken down into little bite sized pieces
that we can easily understand and follow. For example, if you
were writing a "How To Write an Effective Auction Listing"
your first step would be to explain the headline and continue
with as many steps as it took to complete the task. Pretty easy
stuff, huh??

Interview

Another good form of article and again this one which takes
very little time. Write 10-15 questions on a particular topic
you know is hot right now, approach an "expert" that is well
known in that area and ask them if they would mind taking
the time to answer you questions.

For example, you have done some research and found that
the hottest topic online with respect to running an eBusiness
is how to build traffic. You know there are a few good "experts"
out there, so you design 10-15 questions and then go to one
"expert" and explain what you are doing - send them the
questions...and Voila - it's a done deal!

If you're eBusiness happens to deal with health issues,
find out what the hot health issue is right now, design the
questions and go to the "expert" in that area.

The best thing about this form of article is that all the work is
basically done for you. The 10-15 questions are answered
by your expert and all you have to write is the introduction
and conclusion.

And you didn't think you could write...

Now...where does the free advertising come in? It comes in
the form of the Resource Box. A resource box is about 3-5 lines
and follows your article. This little box lets people know who wrote
the article with a bit more info on what you do and where you can
be found. That my friend, is an advertisement promoting you and
your business.

After you have written your article, let it start working for
you. Get it into the hands of as many ezine publishers as you
can. Publishers are always looking for new, quality content
for their issues. Approach them with your article!

You are building trust, creating rapport and being pegged as
an "expert." Plus the more exposure that article gains...the

So what is framing and reframing? We constantly put frames around the things we do and the things we believe. Consider how you view your previous successes and failures. What kind of frame did you put around it? Was it a useful one?

I remember talking to my wife about learning to drive, and it was interesting to hear her say that when she was first learning, her frame was "I'll never get this!" Whereas mine was, "Oh this is a cinch!" Two completely different frames and as a result two different behaviors occurred. It took her quite a bit longer to drive a car. As we talked some more, I realized that there were differences in our mistakes as well. When she made a mistake, she would say, "Oh great I did it again!" Whereas I would say, "Oh I need to remember to do that (the right way) next time!" And I usually did.

Reframing is changing frames that have already been created. Now some of you maybe thinking, well isn't that kind of like lying. Well you have to realize that your initial perception was not really the "truth" to begin with. It was just how you framed it at the time. If it wasn't useful, then change it now. When I first learned about reframing, I utilized it to help her with her original frame she had about her driving ability. Now notice this often happens. She went from framing her experience of driving to her ability of driving. Now she had a less than useful frame of her driving ability. It had gotten to a point where this frame was making her accident prone. She would always avoid the interstate too. So I took her to an empty parking lot one evening and in thirty minutes taught her to drive my manual shift car. And as she began developing new beliefs about her driving abilities and while having a positive driving experience, I looked over at her as she came to a stop and all I said was "How much easier will driving your car feel?" She looked back at me, smiling, and said, "Yeah!" That is all it took. She reframed all her previous perceptions of her skills and abilities about driving and made them more useful.

You can either reframe the context or the content. When you reframe the context, you find a particular context in which the belief or behavior is more useful. You want to ask yourself "When/Where would this behavior/belief be useful?" When you reframe the content or meaning, you change the meaning of the particular belief or behavior. You may want to ask yourself questions like, "What else could this mean?" "What is the positive value of this behavior?" "How else could I describe this behavior?"

Examples of Context Reframes:

=> Instead of procrastinating getting started cold calling, procrastinate stopping cold calling.

=> Instead of eating to fill emotional needs, eat only when you feel really hungry.

=> Instead of relieving stress by smoking, relieve stress by going for a jog or spend an hour in the Jacuzzi.

Examples of Content Reframes:

=> Don't sell people on the benefits of your products, help them buy the benefits your product offers.

=> Working hard doesn't lead to success, working smart does.

=> Strong leaders tell their troops to advance backwards, never retreat.

Start playing with the frames you have about your successes and failures and begin to make them more useful. Remember to keep the lessons you originally learned, but what else could all your previous frames mean. How much more can you learn now!
