I've had a lot of time to think about the phenomenal success of stories like Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings trilogy - and why these stories resonate so with me.

It's not the magic.

It's not the wizards and elves, hobbits and Hogwarts.

It's not the dazzling special effects.

Those things are all wonderful. They add charm, magic and mystery. They're just ripping good fun!

But the real staying power of these stories lies in The Message. And it's the same Message that runs like a whisper throughout all great literature - and, for that matter, not so great literature.

The Message? Things are not as they seem. There's more to us - and our world - than meets the eye.

We are, indeed, magical!

Living, as we do, in the sunlight world of mundane reality, we forget who we are. We're afraid of our own shadows. Afraid to step out and spread our wings. We wrap ourselves in our fears and limitations and live, as Thoreau said, "lives of quiet desperation."

And that's why the Harry Potter stories and Tolkien's tales of hobbits and Middle Earth strike a chord with me. They remind me that I need not be afraid, that I have hidden powers and untapped reserves.

And, boy oh boy, do I need that message. Constantly and always!

There's Harry Potter, a poor abused orphan who's maintained his spunk in spite of it all. But Harry doesn't have a clue. He doesn't know who he is or what he's got. J. K. Rowling's novels are all about how Harry finds out who he is and what he can do.

Do you know who you are, what you've got and what you can do?

I sincerely doubt it!

Then there's Bilbo Baggins and his nephew Frodo. Two hobbits, lovers of comfort, security and all things domestic. Or so they think. They don't know who they are or what they've got either, do they? Tolkien leads us on a very long and convoluted tale to show how they find out.

Or at least, they start to find out. Because, you know, there's always more to learn.

There are thousands, if not millions, of self-help, motivational, and inspirational products out there. Books, tapes, seminars and workshops.

But nothing, absolutely nothing, has the power to move, inspire, encourage and uplift like a well-crafted story, poem, or song.

I'm not suggesting that you become a Harry Potter or a Tolkien fan. But I am suggesting that you use art to remind you of how very magical you are - how very strange and incredible the world around you is.

I want you to remember how deep your reserves are.

There's more. There's always so much more!

Heoffers up logical reasons to explain these occurrences. Before too long thingsbegin happening that are not so easy to explain away.

Then suddenly one evening something is captured on one ofthe security cameras while the family is sleeping. It happens quickly and thenits over. But it definitely occurred. Then the next night something elseoccurs that we the audience can see, but which is unknown to the sleepingfamily.

Director Todd Williams and writer Michael R. Perry thenbegin our decent into the world of terror. Each night the audience findsthemselves scanning all four corners of each security camera, looking for thenext happening. We watch as the pranks slowly turn from mischievous toworrisome to horrific.

Paranormal Activity 2 is reminiscent of the 1975 movie Jawsin that in the beginning much of the chills occur off screen, such as thefamily dog growling at something out of site, or the baby Hunter seeming tostare at something in the room that no one else can see. The danger of thesituation is initially only hinted at.

Then the safety of the daylight hours is shattered in adevastating way, and all heck breaks loose.

Paranormal Activity 2 is a well made, well acted horrormovie that is sure to have audiences talking about the violent and terrifying endingfor years to come.

Recently I was reflecting on what it took to be successful in real estate and life. My mind recalled a movie from the early 1980s called Buckaroo Bonzai. One of the characters in the movie had a saying that caught on in my circle of friends at the time. The saying was where ever you gothere you are. Now it was a cute little saying at the time, but the truth is most of us have to struggle to live it.

How many times have we gone to show a property, list a home, go to work, spend time with our family, and we werent really there? Where ever you gothere you are. But are we really there? We are certainly there in physical body, but are we mentally there?

Let me share with you the four rules of real estate.

1. Be there. This rule means to show up on time. Being on time to a listing appointment can often mean the difference between getting the listing and not getting the listing. It means preparing before you go on an appointment so you are ready. Being there also means treating your real estate career like a real job. Show up at work everyday at the same time. My day started at 7 a.m. during my sales career. It was very rare for me not to be in the office at that time.

2. Focus mentally. Focus mentally means to be in the moment with intense concentration. The better you focus mentally the more results you will get for your time invested. If you need to listen to the clientfocus on what the client is saying. If you are formulating your answer or response, you are not listening to the client. Learning to focus is one of the most valuable skills you can acquire. Focus always comes before success. Focus means to pay attention to what is happening around you, to pay attention to the details of success. It is usually a small thing that separates success from failure. Just ask the United States womens soccer team or better yet, ask China. One penalty kick made the difference between first and second place. The difference between the number one PGA tour player, Tiger Woods, and number 150 is about one stroke per 18 holes and over four million dollars in earnings. Focus mentally in the moment you are in.

3. Tell the truth. In every situation tell the truth. Agents are often given the opportunity to tell people something they dont want to hear. For example, their home is worth $150,000, but the seller wants $165,000. What do you do? Many agents will take the listing at $165,000 and deal with the $15,000 price reduction later. My belief is to tell the truth. You may not get the listing, but at least you will know you were honest. Too many of us hedge or shade the truth. Understand there will be a time of reckoning. It may not be now, but it will come. It may be when the market slows and you have a bunch of listings that will not sell. Remember the truth will set you free.

4. Accept the results and move on. Too often agents let the highs get too high and the lows get too low. We need to accept the results we get. Work to understand them and the reasons why, then move on to any necessary changes.

Mark McGuire realizes that striking out is all part of playing baseball. He knows he will have other opportunities. He will have other times at bat, some today and some tomorrow. If a pitch fools him he learns from it, so as not to get fooled again. We are all going to strike out. We are going to strike out with buyers and sellers, other agents, and our broker. It is just part of life. We must learn from our mistakes and move on.

If you are worried about the lost deal, you wont be able to focus on the one that is currently in front of you. The process of your daily disciplines and improvement of your skills are what you can control.

Gustav Klimt and the Power of Danae

When watching the 2010 Hollywood movie "Clash of the Titans", masterworks in the world of art are not the first thing that comes to mind, at least not the visual arts. Yet the story has its roots in a story that has inspired artists for centuries. The story about the daughter of the king of Argos and Eurydice who was foretold that he would be killed by his daughters son and subsequently locked her a tower of bronze.

Here she was visited by Zeus, in the form of a shower of gold, who thus impregnated her, leading to the birth of Perseus. The king threw them both into the ocean in a wooden box, but they were rescued and thus begin the epic movie about the legend of Perseus.

Except that for most artists, the best part of the story is already over. The slaying of medusa, the travel to the underworld, the rescue of Andromeda and such are all well and good, but for the true artist, another part of the story carries much more interest, namely the impregnation of Danae by the shower of gold.
This part, which The Clash of the Titan actually ignores instead placing Zeus human shape in bed with Danae, has been the subject of numerous artistic depictions. From the artists of antiquity to Titus, Rembrandt and Klimt, Danae has been depicted on numerous occasions as she receives the shower of gold. Titus alone painted four versions. But what is it that strikes a chord with artist in this story. What is it that makes it so appealing to portray this particular scene?

There is of course the duality. Did Danae know about the shower of gold and what it would do? Did she enjoy this contact with the god or did she shun it? Was there any love involved? Titus e.g. has Eros included in one of his depictions, while in the work of Klimt, there is little done to hide her sexual ecstasy. Still, we are dealing with forbidden love and feelings, of going against the wishes of her father and of giving herself away. There is a loss of innocence in the scene, of letting go and maybe dealing with the consequences afterwards that many an artist finds fascinating. It is partly an expression of the hooker - Madonna complex as the virgin is turned.

At the same time, there are also strict parallels to another virgin who was impregnated by a god many years later. And while the church certainly did not in the mid-twentieth century allow the graphic depiction of that scene, Danae was still fair game. As such, some depictions of the scene do allude to that other later event, creating a somewhat ambivalent expression.

The re-emergence of interest in the classic arts and legends during the renaissance also contributed. With this re-emergence came the legends and heroes of old. Gustav Klimt also had a well established love for Greek myths and portrayed not only Danae but also Pallas Athene herself.

However, in the end, with all the other legends of Perseus and his exploits taken into accounts, why is it Danae that we see time and time again? No one has said that Sony knew their purchase of ... Music would put them in the drivers seat of the powerful story of Gary Revel's ... of the ... of Martin Luther King Jr.

No one has said that Sony knew their purchase of Acuff-Rose Music would put them in the drivers seat of the powerful story of Gary Revel's investigation of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. but neither have they denied it.

In 1977 Gary was covertly investigating the assassination of MLK and he and attorney Mary Noel wrote, 'They Slew The Dreamer', a song about the related conspiracy and agreed to have the record of the song released on Rebel records and later as a cut on Star City Records Inc. As far as the world knew Gary was only a struggling songwriter with a young family living in Nashville who had a few songs signed at Acuff-Rose Music's ASCAP arm Milene Music Inc. With only a few independent releases to his credit it didn't look like he'd be shaking the world with his talent any time soon. 'They Slew The Dreamer' was produced by Johnny Erdelyan at the Acuff-Rose studios in Nashville and when released it didn't shake the music world but it did shake up the powers that ran the government of the State of Tennessee as well as the United States and for good measure some powerful Organized Crime figures.

The legal consequences of the record became apparent to Gary and Acuff-Rose when a picture of the Jack Kershaw AKA Karl designed record sleeve with the title 'They Slew The Dreamer' and Gary's name appeared on the front page of the now defunct Nashville Banner with the caption 'James Earl Ray Promotion Gimmicks'. The front page news story also included a Tee Shirt with the slogan 'I Didn't Do It' and a picture of James Earl Ray. Gary, Mary Noel and their partner, Attorney Jack Kershaw met with a number of other attorneys and all agreed it would not be helpful to sue anyone because the Federal Government said Gary's lyrics to the song had no factual basis. The official government position was that there was no conspiracy in King's assassination and any words from Gary Revel that disagreed with their position was purely fiction. The deadly accuracy of the lyrics on Gary's record sleeve contain the elements that spell out King's murder and the conspiracy that killed him. They tell the 'true' story of the conspiracy and assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and by virtue that the song and record are a copyrighted work of Gary Revel and protected as such by the Federal Courts provide a juxtaposed and complicated scenario that is refuted and protected by the government at the same time. However the published caption 'James Earl Ray Promotion Gimmicks' could not be a cause of action for suit because all the State and Federal laws related to it protected the newspaper in that it was for their purposes a truthful statement.

Now enter Sony and their subsidiary Columbia Pictures. Recently Gary has been talking with Sony and Columbia Pictures about making the movie. They have asked for a copy of the William Sachs' screenplay 'MLK' that is based on Gary's song and investigation. The story of Gary's investigation has been on the verge of being made into a movie several times over a number of years but each time there has been a glitch just before Gary was ready to sign a purchase agreement for his story. Now that anyone who makes the movie will ultimately have to purchase a license from Sony Music because of the song's unique nature to the project, Sony and subsequently Columbia Pictures have found themselves with an in-house project. If Sony didn't know what it was buying when it bought Acuff-Rose you could say they were lucky or it was a coincidence; whatever the truth, Gary's song and somewhat tragic story of intrigue and murder that is the basis of Sachs' MLK screenplay is a movie that is their's for the making. There are others who want to make this movie and still more have been trying to get it made for years but at this time it looks like Columbia Pictures is the most likely suitor.
