What Made Ben-Hur An Amazing Achievement

The academy award winning 1959 movie Ben Hur is a stunning cinematic look at the life of Judah Ben-Hur during the last days of Jesus Christ's life. The greatness of this movie was due to a combination of story, direction, and acting abilities.

With a legendary director like William Wyler, a 15 million dollar budget, full production support from MGM and an acting sensation such as Charleton Heston, its easy to see why 1959s Ben-Hur galloped out of the Academy Awards with 11 Oscars. Over the course of the nine month production, 300 man-made sets, thousands of costumed extras and one epic chariot race meshed together under the direction of Wyler to create a stunning, historically accurate portrayal of the life of the Jewish merchant prince, Judah Ben-Hur during the last moments of Christs life.

Wheres the emperor? is the first question that a history buff may ask themselves while watching this film. Many Hollywood Roman epics feature the emperor as a main character in the film. They exploit stories that historian and gossip hound, Suetonius, crafted about the lavish, hedonistic and often ridiculous tendencies of power hungry, sex-crazed violent emperors. The emperor is not shown in this movie and I think it is because he would take away from the story, after all, Ben-Hur is supposed to be about the life of Christ and the absurd antics of a cocky demigod emperor would only distract from the story and not allow it to focus on central characters such as Judah Ben-Hur and his faceless friend, Jesus Christ.

Jesus face is never shown in this film and after theorizing why this could be, I read that his face was deliberately shielded at the request of the author of the novel from which the movie was based. By only showing the back of Jesus head, Wyler managed to capture the power and influence of Christ by documenting the visceral reactions that wash over Hestons face when he interacts with Christ. It makes Jesus more of a respected every-man type character that still has the power to cleanse the lingering hate that Hur kept in his heart. It was a bold but effective stylistic choice.

The sets in Ben-Hur allow the audience to image a rich, hulking Rome paved with dirt and speckled with varying cultural venues from busy market places to private royal bed-quarters. All of the costumes were manicured and detailed to appropriate time-period accuracy but they still flossed a Golden Age of Hollywood-esque varnish that made them appear cleaner and shinier than they would actually be if worn by Romans in the filthy city.

They production crew used many props that seemed like they took a long time to acquire or create for very short sequences-a true sign of a large budget. An example of the aforementioned props are the golden nose diving dolphins lap counters during the chariot race, the golden serpentine horns blown at Ben-Hurs parade to power and the large, ostentatious finger rings worn by the Christ-committed merchant, Balthasar. Such accessories are true testimonies to attention to historical detail found in this film.

The exciting and quite climatic chariot race in Ben-Hur was filmed in basically a full sized Circus Maximus that was split open to allow the crew to move freely while filming the sequence. The entire scene took three weeks to film and everything about it from the glistening leather armor to the cracking of Messalas whip to the ornately decorated chariots leap alive off the screen and command the viewer to come enjoy the entertainment in Rome. Historically accurate as it may be, it is easy to imagine what an event like that could have actually looked like back then and it is evident that the production designers and researches used factual text to conjure this recreation with splendor.

The most impressive and historically accurate scene in the film is the infamous naval battle. The ships were constructed perfectly to match the period of Rome in which they were sailed. When the ships ram each other and the soldiers board the opposing deck, thats when the productions credibility skyrockets because they knew how actual naval battles played out during that time. The fire pits used to light the ballistas massive arrows and the metal pointed front of the battle ship tempered to ram at full speed all came together to portray a very historically accurate sea battle that would be fought in ancient Rome.

The tremendous budget, appropriate acting and dead-on historical details really raised Ben-Hur from a typical sword and sandal picture to a movie held to legendary status even by current standards. Colorful costumes and monolithic sets allowed director, William Wyler to shape the movie into a Roman epic that held such a sense of place and time due to its historical accuracy.

Instead he personally told them in his own spellbinding way the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which he intended to make into his first feature length film. It was a risk unlike any other he had taken before. The film would cost a million and a half dollars at a time Disney was spending anywhere from ten to thirty thousand on his short cartoons. Doubts came from his wife Lillian and his brother and business partner Roy, who were sure they would be in debt for most of the rest of the lives. Also nervous was Walt's backer Bank of America, who at one point interrupted the production by cutting off his credit. Then there were the heads of the other studios like MGM, Universal and Warner Brothers. They would gather for their weekly poker games at the Hillcrest Country Club and speculate that Walt, who they called "the Mickey Mouse Man", would never succeed, no one would sit still for an hour and a half to watch a cartoon. And the press referred to Snow White as "Disney's Folly".

Despite the doubters and his own health problems (he suffered from a thyroid condition), Walt pressed forward relentlessly for three years. The key to the film, as far as Disney was concerned was the evil queen/peddler woman. Snow White was sympathetic, the dwarfs were humorous, but the villain had to be horrifying to keep the audience interested. The vocals were performed by a renowned stage actress named Lucille Laverne. Her haughty voice was a great fit as the queen, but her playing of the character after she transformed into the old crone had some at the studio worried. "Wait, I have an idea", she said. She left the recording room for a few minutes then returned. "I'm ready". She delivered her lines in a way that chilled and thrilled the Disney staff. After she finished there was applause and she was asked what she did when she left. She smiled and said," I took my teeth out!"

Walt's calculations were correct, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs was a hit throughout the entire world in 1938 and for many years beyond, keeping audiences riveted. The only down side for Walt was that maybe the peddler woman was a little too horrifying, he was disturbed by reports from Radio City Music Hall in New York where the film was setting box office records. It turned out that every few days the theater management had to replace seats. . . due to excessive wetness.

The teasers and promotions of Tanu Nenu created a decent buzz for the film. Starring debutante Santosh Shoban and Avika Gor, this film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story: -

Kiran (Santosh Shobhan) is an employee of call center that hates America and NRI culture. One day he comes across Keerthi (Avika Gor) and falls for her. As time passes, even Keerthi approves his love and the couple spend some happy times together.On the other hand, the father of Keerthi (Ravi Babu) is a cunning man who dreams of sending his daughter to the United States for the big bucks. Twist in the tale arises when he decides to get his daughter married to an NRI.What is Kiran doing now? How could he stop Keerthi to leave the United States? Why Kiran hate America? For answers to these questions, you need to watch the movieon the big screen.

Plus Points: -

Santosh Shobhan impresses with its first film. The young actor highlights the good emotions and is also good in the comedy department. His dialogue delivery is neat and so well planned, it can go a long way in his career.Avika Gor is also good in the film. His chemistry with Santosh is decent as the pair look quite convincing on screen. First half of the film is quite fresh with an interesting range points.Friendship path between youth and NRI relationships were presented needs a special mention. While Ravi Babu is good, his role was brief.

Negative points: -

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film was the lack of emotion in the second half. After finishing the first half with quite an interesting range shot, sending the loose Director of the procedure in a stupid way.There are some scenes and situations in the second half which is a huge disappointment. In addition, the way the character Ravi Babu is finished and emotions presented after this incident immature.entertainment value is slightly lower in the second part. Nenu Tanu will appeal only to youth and multiplexes.

Technical aspects:-

Music by Sunny M R is decent and so was his background score. written dialogues and satires executed on the NRI culture were well written. Scenario is decent in the first half but wobbles slightly during the second half. The film's production values are very good. Although the film is made on a small budget entirely, camera and art work make the film a rich look.Coming to the director Ram Mohan, he did a pretty decent job for his first film. He chose a novel line of history and sets it up in age and present situations well. Ram even managed to develop a decent love story and extract good performance from its starting players. But the only place where it is through the second half that is pretty poor. he had taken care of that part, the result would have been even better.

Verdict:-

Overall, Nenu Tanu is an original love story that will appeal to the youth and the public multiplex for most. The simple and clean film content and impressive performances by the lead pair are certain assets. That said, the film is let down a little because of a poor second half and ends just watch ok this weekend.

The movie Sunset Boulevard depicts the callous and unworthy, to an extent wicked, attitude of the Hollywood film industry. The movie brings out the unwarranted treatment meted out to its own stars of the past.

When the silent cinema graduated to talkies, the film industry moved ahead, propelled by its selfish motives, leaving behind the legends of yester years to rot in their past glory, as they had no place or role to play in the present industry scenario. The most affected characters in the movie are Joe Gillis, a screenwriter, and Norma Desmond, an undisputed queen of silent cinema.

Joe Gillis, a modern day screenwriter known for his originality, find his scripts losing charm and not able to impress the customers. He is totally depressed and financially broke. His one time appreciated and acclaimed quality of being close to reality writing, no more generates any interest among the leading industry directors and producers. The burden of life is compounded by bloodhounds tracking him for running three payments behind for his car. He finds difficult to even afford a single room apartment, he stays in. With all doors shut, absolutely no work or support from industry or friends (including his agent), he accidentally comes in contact with Norma who employs him for writing screenplay for a script written by her. Considering his state of affairs and driven to the post, he stoops down to accept the offer, knowing the lowly credentials of the script.

Norma Desmond portrays a middle aged woman and a legendary star of silent movies. She lives in a desolate place, in euphoria of the past glory without accepting the bitter reality of her present day status in the film industry. She lives in a dream world of making a great return in the industry that has forgotten her. She is obsessed for the script that she has written for her return to silver screen. The emptiness and solitude of her life has driven her to mental instability.

Norma is the employer while Joe is the employee. Norma, being mentally unstable, has an obsession for all her possessions. Joe, compelled by the circumstances, falls prey to Normas obsession. She considers him to be her property and showers a handful of presents on him with an expectation of being loyal to her. Joe is unable to appreciate this gesture in his youthfulness and considers being trapped with his independence endangered. He is forced to stay with her like a puppet with the strings being controlled by Norma. He wants to live and enjoy his life and relations with Ms Banter, but cant pursue it owing to the jealous Norma, his employer.

Norma has an ongoing conflict with the cinema. She discards the latest developments in the industry and considers the silent era to be the best. She goes on to criticize the latest stars in the industry and believes them to be sub-standard when compared to her own self. She charges the industry for bringing disrepute and decline of the past stars and industry as is evident from one of her dialogues; Look at them in the front offices--- the master minds! They took the idols and smashed them The Fairbankses and the Chaplins and the Gilberts and the Valentinos. And who have they got now? Some nobodies----a lot of pale little frogs croaking pish-posh!

Why Encourage People?

Win taught me that whatever you focus on expands. This was long before the movie The Secret or before the Law of Attraction hit mainstream media. Win called it the first law of psychology. Whatever you focus on will expand.

When I drove Mandy Evans back to the airport, she asked me an interesting question:

"Have you always encouraged people?"

She had spent four days with me and observed me encouraging complete strangers to go for their dreams.

There was an author at a booth and I bought his book and advised him on how to market it.

There was a waitress struggling to get to all her tables and I tipped her more than the bill to encourage her to have a great day.

There was the newbie restaurant owners that I encouraged by designing and distributing an insert ad to tell the locals about their great food.

There was of course Diane Watson, who is now The Property Hugger.

So Mandy wanted to know if I was always encouraging of others.

"No," I instantly replied. "When I was younger I was angry at the world and didn't encourage anybody. I was into survival and focused on trying to write, get published, and just generally survive."

I knew what question was coming next, and I knew I didn't have a quick answer for it.

"Then when did you start encouraging people?"

I thought for a long time. I honestly couldn't come up with an answer by the time I dropped off Mandy at the terminal.

But I've been chewing on it ever since.

I told Nerissa about the question. As I free associated an answer, she said she heard the word "love" used a lot.

"Love is part of why I do it," I said. "I love seeing a person come alive with the passion they secretly want to express. But I also know that when you love a person with total acceptance, they feel free to become whatever they desire."

But I still couldn't pin-point the time when I began to do this encouraging on a regular basis.

Pat O'Bryan and I had dinner one night and I told him the above story. He then began to probe, trying to get me to narrow down the year and possibly the event that caused me to become encouraging of others.

"I remember reading books that awakened me to the idea that if we focus on the good, we'll get more good," I explained.

Marva Collins is a school teacher in Chicago who taught me, through the stories and books by and about her, that when you focus on the positive in a person, and nurtured and encouraged them, they would blossom.

Marva took inner city kids that were considered retarded, special, and/or illiterate and transformed them within months into kids who read Shakespeare and tested at grade levels five times higher than kids of the same age.

Decades ago I was teaching adult education classes in Houston for a company called Leisure Learning. I would try the Marva Collins approach in my classes. I marveled to see people get excited, take action, and go on to write and publish their own books. They needed encouraged, not just informed.

Pat listened intently as I went on to explain that I also studied Win Wenger, the creativity genius who teaches people how to raise their IQ with simple exercises he created.

"It didn't take long for me to begin using these methods on myself," I told Pat. "I'd encourage myself and focus on what I wanted. As it worked for me, I realized it would work for others. So I started encouraging people."

I was also lucky enough to have been married to a woman who was supportive of every idea I came up with, even when we were broke and taking risks could have been seen as a bad move. But Marian focused on the good in me, saw potential, and watered it with her love.

Over time it became easier to encourage people because it felt good, I saw results, and people loved it. So few of us get support that when we suddenly have it, we drink it up like a starving person in the desert.

I've taught my Miracles Coaches this same general idea. It's the prime directive of my life: Find the spark in a person and encourage it to come out in full glory.

During the meal, the waitress came to Pat and I and asked what we needed. Neither of us needed a thing. We were in the moment. We were happy. But I decided to ask what she needed.

"Nothing," she said. "One day I want to open my own restaurant but right now I'm just waiting tables."

Pat and I exchanged glances and he winked. He knew this was my opening. I turned to the waitress and began to encourage her to do something, anything, to make her dream come true.

I have no idea if she'll actually do anything, but she smiled big and thanked me for the encouragement.

Discerning the ghosts in hiding versus manifested ghosts in people

Raja-tama situations include places where people indulge in plotting against society in any form, alcohol, drugs, cigarette smoking, promiscuous sexual behaviour, dimly lit places, loud music etc. In such venues we see people behaving quite different from their normal behaviour, it is actually the ghost manifesting either partially or fully.

A ghost manifests many a time to intimidate, scare or disrupt family life by causing fights etc. Higher level ghosts also manifest when they want to create wider scale destruction through the person that they possess.

They also manifest to disrupt the spiritual practice of the person whom they have possessed. This is done by them so that they disturb or frighten those around, who may be in a spiritual meeting.

When ghosts manifest on their own accord, it is unlikely that the manifestation will go noticed unless the ghost wants it to be noticed.

How are ghosts forced to manifest?

Sometimes, ghosts possessing a person are forced into manifesting and exposing themselves. The reasons for these types of manifestations include:

The ghost is overpowered by the purity of the place such as in the case of a spiritual healing session and its spiritual strength is depleted.

The time has come for the ghost to leave the person because of completion of the give-and-take account (destiny) between the affected person and itself.

The time has come for the ghost to be destroyed.

A person possessed by a ghost manifests when he is under pure or holy influence, this happens because:

It feels uncomfortable when it comes in contact with a highly spiritually evolved person, place or item such as Holy water.

It manifests because the purity and sanctity of the place, person or item it has come into contact with is more than its own strength.

At such times the ghost tries to avoid such places by

Putting thoughts into the person that it is possessing to stay away from anything pure and Holy such as a spiritual meeting.

Going out of the body and vicinity while the person is in a pure environment or

Hiding in the physical, mental or intellectual body of the person by surrounding itself with a thick covering of its black energy to fend off the purity.

The most dangerous aspect of demonic possession

At the point of full manifestation during a spiritual healing session, the ghost is generally at its weakest.
