Music Helps Raise IQ

I am in love with music. In fact, my Facebook status is all about music or movie soundtracks. I always rely on music in expressing how I feel in a particular situation every single day.

Growing up, music has helped me cope with the many dramas I encountered. The first love, the first broken heart, the loss of my father, and the happy times with friends and family. Even at work, I relax myself from all the stress by listening to the music of Enya. I played the guitar but never really formally took lessons. I just learned how to play so I can socialize with each circle of friends I got to meet.
Recently I discovered that music is actually helpful in the development of our IQ and mental development. Researches on how music affects the brain and mental development are available in musicology and music advocacy sites. It has been observed through the use of advanced technology such as the PET scans and MRI imaging that new neural pathways are created when an individual is engaged in a musical activity. Activities referred includes but not limited to composing musical pieces and playing musical instruments. It has been observed that ALL sides of our brain literally lights up in the monitors as opposed to only a part of the brain lights up when engaged in any other activity. Ive heard of parents making their babies listen to classical music even when theyre still in the womb so that they will grow smart but it was only recently was I informed of the science behind it and the studies that back the claim. Indeed passively listening to music helps. But measurable mental development is mostly attributed to composing and playing musical instruments.
There are, however, many other benefits that can be derived from music. Socially, music is an ageless hobby creating interaction with great people. It can be observed that creativity and striving for excellence is developed and embraced among musical groups. Discipline and organization are also honed. These are traits that prove valuable for us in later life. Think about having children develop these traits early in life, wouldnt it be neat? Sharon Burch, a music teacher and creator of Freddie the Frog book series thought it would be a great idea to get our children interested in music to reap these benefits and help them raise their IQ. She wrote fanciful books with the mission of breaking down big abstract concepts into developmentally appropriate pieces for kids. And she made these books interesting by introducing fascinating characters and places so children can easily retain the lessons in memory.
I wish we had the same resources before when I was younger but then these helpful books are meant for the next generation and my future children. Help raise your kids IQ by engaging them in activities related to music as early as preschool so we can have a future filled with creative, vibrant, and smarter citizens.

Internet Buzzwords and Newbies: Proceed With Caution!

Learning the ropes of Internet Marketing is one of the
hardest things to do; even more so if you are a Newbie
to computers and the Web.

I remember watching the movie "The Flim Flam Man" and
heard the quote "You Can't Con an Honest Man."

The above quote, taken in the context of the movie,
did make perfect sense. The movie dialog implied that
the selfish desire to gain an unethical edge was the hook
the experienced con man used to snare his victims or
"pigeons." In the end, the victims fell for the con
because they had a disregard for the Golden Rule!

I'm bringing this up because the thinking implied by
the quote doesn't fit many of the offers the Internet
Newbie will encounter while searching for a business guide.

You can be a good, honest and hard working person and
still fall for many of the traps awaiting you in cyberspace!
The most appealing target for the experienced Web con
man, is the Newbie's lack of experience and knowledge!

All over the Net there are offers constantly bombarding
Newbies with the latest systems and applications; "new"
methods that will grow a business with a minimum effort!

Some of them are given fancy names: "the K-15 System
Will Make You Wealthy!" or, "You Have a Ground Floor
Opportunity with G-ZAP, get in now because it won't be
available tomorrow...."

The above offers should be investigated from heat to
toe! Many of them are simply more of the same re-hashed
information aimed at Internet business Newbies.

One of the main reasons Internet Marketers continue
coming up with so many new programs, applications and
systems is known as "Internet Time." Internet products
have a very short shelf life; what was the latest thing a
year ago will now be old news!

That isn't to say there aren't good systems and
technology. However, due diligence is a requirement to
ascertain the value of any offer presented.

Take your time and look at the offer to examine it with a
fine tooth comb! You should check out any buzzword
filled business offer with extra caution!

Ask all the questions you need answered until you're
sure you understand what you're getting into. If there
are no straight answers to be had, perhaps you should
reconsider.

Vennello Hai Hai Telugu Movie Review Rating

Release date : February 05 2016

AuthorRating : 2.25/5

Director : Vamsi

Producer : D. Venkatesh

Music Director : Chakri

Starring : Ajmal, Nikitha Narayan

Senior director Vamsi, needs no introduction. After making some memorable films in the past, he is back with his latest venture Vennello Lo Hai Hai which has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Story: -

Susheel (Ajmal) is a software engineer go lucky happy to work in Mumbai. His parents set its alliance with a girl named Satya (Nikita Narayanan) and ask him to meet her. Meanwhile, the relatives Susheel present his horoscope to their spiritual guru. To their great shock, they discover that their son is already married. They reveal the same thing that gets Susheel also shocked. Angry against this, he suddenly remembers his childhood where he married Tanuja during a fun game kids. A curious Susheel now starts looking Tanuja.Tanuja is this? Susheel will finally find? and what happens to Satya during this time? Which forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points: -

The concept of marriage and the various aspects of the relationship were presented. How Ajmal is on its research and meeting different people in different areas of life was treated decently. Nikita Narayan is ok in his role. The rural establishment and the typical characters that are known are all Vamsi film was presented to some extent. Music given by the end Chakri comes as a huge relief in the film. twist interval and the highlight was well managed.

Negative points: -

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the story boring and outdated. Policymakers have taken a routine story line and presented the film in a battered the formula of death. Thus, all the scenes and situations that come during this period are below par. There is absolutely no emotion in the characters. Moreover, the logic go for a draw and the performance by the support team leaves much to be desired. The fun and simple comedy that is expected in all Vamsi films is lacking big time in this film. After a moment in the film, you begin to wonder if a renowned filmmaker like Vamsi has actually made this film. Yet another drawback is the main leader Ajmal. It has sleep walked through the film and his facial expressions clearly present its disinterest in the project.

Technical aspects: -

As said before, the Sri music is pretty impressive. All the songs sound good and some numbers are drawn from a well experimentally. the camera work is decent and showcases the journey in a good light. The edition is also correct that the manufacturers have managed to remove the delays that the film was made from recent years.Coming to the director Vamsi, he did a very poor job with the film. Its management is below par, as he did not tell the interesting way of film or a novel. Everything looks so tired that Vamsi has failed in all departments of film.

Verdict:-

Overall, Vennello Lo Hai Hai is probably one of the weakest film career Vamsi. The brand of the legendary director is completely missing from the story, narration and also performance. Except for some decent songs, this film has nothing to offer and can be easily ignored this weekend.

A cigar box purse or handbag is a unique fashion accessory with a touch of old world charm.

Theres an unmistakable charm about a cigar box purse or handbag. Neat, petite and elegant, and decorated with romantic, quaint and quirky images from a bygone era, these design gems are becoming increasingly sought after fashion accessories. You can buy cigar box purses and handbags made from real cigar boxes, or they can be decorated with just about any image you can imagine, including classic movie stars, fashion photographs, dancers, animals, flowers or abstract designs. If you shop around online, youll find a huge range of cigar box purses and handbags, many of them uniquely designed and sold by the artist who created them. You can even have a cigar box purse or handbag custom made using a favorite image of a pet, a special place, person or thing, or perhaps a cherished old photograph of a great aunt or grandmother taken in a bygone era. Any image is suitable, so long as its your own, and there is no copyright existing in the photograph or artwork. Or if youre particularly creative, you could even make the purse or handbag yourself.

Making your own cigar box purse or handbag.

Its very simple to make a cigar box purse or handbag yourself, and youll have the satisfaction of having something which is absolutely unique. A handbag or purse youve made yourself also makes a lovely gift for someone special. You can buy a simple wooden box, or a real cigar box if you can find one, some paint and lacquer, and the hinges, corners, handle and clasp from purse hardware suppliers which youll find online. Of course, youll also need a photograph or piece of artwork to use on the box. Choosing an image, a color scheme and purse hardware pieces which work together artistically is great fun, and very satisfying when it all comes together. Its a very simple job to paint the box, glue on the image, cover the whole thing with a few coats of lacquer, then attach all of the purse hardware components.

Easy Movie Access is a movie downloading service. After a friend told me about it, I immediately signed up and haven't thrown away another dollar for a movie since.

What is it?
Easy Movie Access is a movie downloading service that is available on the Internet. Anyone can sign up and get access to over 5 million movies and thousands of TV shows.

How Do I Sign Up?
All you do is fill out a quick form and you immediately have access to one of the largest movie databases available today. It only took 3 minutes for me to sign up and I was downloading before I knew it.

How Much Does it Cost?
The service cost a little more than $1 a month. That is about the third of a price of renting a movie at Blockbuster, something I have done for years.

What if I don't Want to Watch Movies on my Computer?
That's fine. I don't like watching movies on my computer either. The downloads are DVD compatible, meaning you can burn them to DVD's and watch them on any DVD player. Once you do this, you have the movies forever. It's a great way to add to your movie collection.

Is it Easy to Use?
It's incredibly easy to use. The site offers a search button where you type the movie you want to download and click search. The movie will appear and with one more click the download begins. If you ever have any questions, customer service is available all day, everyday, via telephone and email.

Does it Take Long to Download?
Downloads take a few minutes. Long movies take a little while but nothing to worry about. Once you start the download you don't need to sit at the computer and wait. You can walk away for a few minutes and when you come back, the movie will be ready for you.

Any Negatives to the Service?
Easy Movie Access is one of the fastest growing sites on the Internet. Since the time I signed up a few months ago, the movie database has grown incredibly as more and more users are joining. The only topic people complain about is having to wait a few minutes for the downloads to finish. This is a valid point, but it will never take as long to download a movie as it would to go to the store and rent a movie.

The movie Apocalypse Now is considered to be of the greatest movies not only about the Vietnam War, but also one of the best movies that described the psychological and personal side of the war witness and participant in the world cinematography.  Making the movie, Coppola faced a lot of difficulties and troubles, but still the work was done, despite enormous cases of tropical fever happened to the actors, huge expenses that could make him a bankrupt and awful, unbearable conditions in jungles, the place where the most of the movie takes place.  In 1980 Pauline Kael wrote, with some justice, Trying to say something big, Coppola got tied up in a big knot of American self-hatred and guilt, and what the picture boiled down to was: White man -- he devil. (Jonathan Rosenbaum Now and then Chicago Reader 11/2001)custom essays

The idea of making an epic, all evolving movie about the war was  well-realized by Coppola, because the mass public needed to see what this dark page in the American military and social life was about, to feel the core of the tragedy and better understand those returned form the war.

As Norris Margot says: Francis Ford Coppola rejected historical verisimilitude and reference when making his Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now. Instead, he chose the mythical approach of modernism. In fact, the films many surrealistic scenes and moments give a strong insight into the incomprehensibility of the Vietnam War. Coppola clearly recognizes that the film is not war, or a simulation, but a representation that must problematize itself. The film played a key role in forcing Americans to reconsider events in Vietnam. (Norris, Margot.  Modernism and Vietnam: Francis Ford Coppolas Apocalypse Now. (Modernisms and Modern Wars) Modern Fiction Studies v44, n3 (Fall, 1998):730 (37 pages))

Truth on Film French director Francois Truffaut once said, I demand that a film express either the joy of making cinema or the agony of making cinema. I am not at all interested in anything in between and what Coppola pictured was a real truth, it was even more realistic that anyone could imagine.

The main point I want to highlight is that this great and terrific movie, primary made as an anti-war movie, hadnt even a hint on such a thing as morality and ethics in war time, which gives it a lot of truthfulness to the movie but at the same time makes it bloody and cruel.  The hard-boiled hero in Apocalypse Now, however, lacks the moral certainty of his American model, and lives to see his ideal exposed as corrupt. (Hellman, John. Vietnam and the Hollywood Genre Film: Inversions of American Mythology in The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. American Quarterly, vol. 34 no. 4. 1982 Fall. pp: 418-439.)

The plot is quit mosaic: officer Willard is ordered to be sent to Cambodian jungles to solve the issue with renegade Colonel Kurtz, who established some kind of a kingdom in the virgin jungles of Mekong and organized a well-armed army from the local aborigine tribe, who worship him like god. Willard agrees, fulfills his duty and returns back.

The atmosphere of the movie can not be reproduced in common words, but to understand the characters better its just enough to quote the words of the main heroes, how the war changed them:

Every time I think Im gonna wake up back in the jungle. When I was home after my first tour, it was worse. Id wake up and thered be nothing. I hardly said a word to my wife, until I said yes to a divorce. When I was here, I wanted to be there. When I was there, all I could think of was getting back into the jungle. Im here a week now. Im waiting for a mission - getting softer. Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker. And every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around, the walls moved in a little tighter. (Willard)

I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. Thats my dream, its my nightmare. Crawling, slipping along the edge of a straight razor and surviving....But we must kill them, we must incinerate them, pig after pig, cow after cow, village after village, army after army, and they call me an assassin. What do you call it when the assassins accuse the assassin? They lie. They lie and we have to be merciful for those who lie, for those nabobs. I hate them. I do hate them. (Colonel Kurtz)

But the whole movie has much more to say, then to depict this quiet usual war-time situation. There is a proverb A fish rots from the head, in this case it rots from inside. Willard hadnt any way, but to give agreement for this task. Looking through the profile of the colonel, a successful military man in the past, physic and rioter in the present, and dead one in future, Willard perfectly understood his victim, and more over he agreed with the rioting colonel. The war that had no idea, was fought by unwilling soldiers, who were ruled by unqualified commanders and more over by unqualified politicians, broke and destroyed the existed personality, it released the hidden savage and beast, that is lying in the bottom of everyones soul and that makes an animal and a human similar. And colonel was such one, Vietnam changed him forever, made him different and the only way he had is to become one of them, one of the enemies he fought against and he changed his broken by war life on worshiping of wordless people, on power and hidden fear.

The atmosphere of the war in Vietnam can not be transmitted by similar picture and scenes of typical movies, thats why Coppola uses surrealistic effects, Vagners music (the flight of the Volkirias), napalm effects, blood and pains, that make every spectator to be a witness of that terrible and awful events and go through that purgatory and hell.

The core of the Vietnam is getting brighter when Willard at least reaches the kingdom of colonel Kurtz. Kurtz realized his situation quite well and he understood that once the end will be put to his rebelling behavior, if not when Willard came than later. Thats why he didnt kill Willard, who came on a boat, but had long conversations with him, and at the end he gave Willard the axe to kill him. Understandably that this murder crossed out all the life of Willard, and he never remained the same he had been before.

Coppolas movie brought to the mass spectators the realities and horrors of the Vietnam War, the shock and stress standed by the veterans of this war and gave the explanation to the vets of the reasons of psychological sickness they had when returning back to peaceful life back in the USA. The darkness of the war that covered the hearts of the soldiers was shown through the episode with colonel Kurtz and captain Willard.

But despite all the horror and massacre described the idea of the movie remains as it was first set by Coppola, to show the immorality of the war and to make the man think about it in future, to give something to think about when one will decide to solve a problem by the military way.

Field of Dreams: Getting a Homerun With Your Keywords
By: Janet L. Hall

If you build it they will come, from the movie Field of
Dreams has become a popular phrase among newbies to
the Internet, uneducated web site owners, and those filled
with dreams of getting rich quick. That phrase is far from the
truth when it comes to your web site.

Many factors and variables come into play when trying to get
people to come to your web site, one of which is your choice
of keywords.

If youre using Microsoft FrontPage or a similar software
package to create your web pages, guess what? Keywords,
page titles, descriptions, and META TAGS are NOT
automatically put on your pages. These important variables
may be missing from your pages unless you enter the
information yourself.

Even worse, if youve hired someone to design your site and
pages for you and they dont know how important these
variables are and arent including themno one will find you,
your services, your productsno sales, no business.

The key to STARTING your field of dreams is to determine
the keywords people are using to find your web site OR the
number one keywords that are getting your competitors the
top rankings in the search pages. Please remember, this is
just the beginning, you have a lot more to learn, such as
where to place the keywords on your web pages, how many,
and much much more.

In turn, each search engine has it's own set of criteria or
requirements to enable your web site to be ranked near the
top of the search pages. And some, you can even buy your
way to the top of the pages.

So, how do you determine what keywords you need on your
pages to make a home run?

Seven Homerun Keyword Strategies:

Game Plan: Write out a list of keywords and have your
friends, family, and client's review for suggestions. Select
two to three dozen that are the most important for your web
pages. (NOTE - Each page on your site should have it's own
keywords.) If you already have keywords - this is a good
time to * OverHall * them .

Batting Order: Put your most important keywords near the
beginning of your TAGS (more about TAGS next time) and
at the top of your page.

Field Position: Know where to place your keywords
throughout your pages.

Double Play: Look up your keywords in a Thesaurus, such
as Roget's Internet Thesaurus at http://www.thesaurus.com ,
and use some of the alternative words as your keywords.

Signals: Don't forget to check out and use regional
terminology and common misspelling of words.

Clean up: Keyword and Statistical Software can be
purchased to assist in choice of keywords and the weight
(sometimes referred to as keyword density) of your
keywords.

7. Stealing Bases: What are your competitor keywords that
are ranking at the top of the search engines?

I hope you can get a Grand Slam!

I am certainly one of the people who was really looking forward to watching this movie because the book, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, did have a significant impact on my life when I read it about 15 years ago. I was not disappointed.

I was impressed with the level of talent that was brought to it. I thought Nick Nolte was great as Socrates. I also liked Scott Mechlowicz and Amy Smart in their roles.

Of course, as a big fan of the book, I couldnt help being a little disenchanted that it didnt follow it more closely. I realize that was destined to be the case though. The key messages still made their way to the audience in a poignant manner.

I have to admit that there is much I cannot remember now from the book because after I read it I lent it to an acquaintance and never got it back. After renting the DVD I bought it and will buy the original book again as well.

The one missing piece that I had truly hoped to see on screen was the long speech Socrates made at the end of the book as this had the most profound effect on me. Then I remembered that Dan had also put this speech in another book of his that I purchased, No Ordinary Moments. Here is an excerpt.

these concerns can monopolize your attention; you think, Ive got no time for bliss right now; I have to get this report in by noon tomorrow! So the truth that sets you free gets buried at the bottom of the in box. You look for immediate solutions to lifes little problems. Drowning in a deluge of details, you grab for anything that floats, when, with a simple shift of attention, you could enjoy the water. Right now, in this and every moment, you are engaged in a great battle! The shadows of fear and insecurity sing you to sleep, call you into the cocoon Why do I tell you this? Its to let you know youre not alive! Not yet. Now is the time to wake up.

As I re-read it I realized that the path I have decided to take in my life is not only in accord with the Heros journey but is also in harmony with the way of the Peaceful Warrior!

I highly recommend both the book and the DVD!

The quotes in the movies are so dear to our existence and in our hearts and that made them famous. Throughout in our conversations, we pop in some famous quotes from the movies and that influences us from time to time in how we chat and converse. One way of saying goodbye is using the line of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his film The Terminator (1984) "I'll be back". If somebody ask you what life is, then just tell them that "Life is like a box of chocolate; you'll never know what you gonna get" by Forest Gump. Even the children these days, they are able to quote the well-known line of "Bond, James Bond".
Be frank in saying "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" in Gone with the Wind. To intensify more ambiance in a bouquet of roses, why won't you attach a letter with a famed line up from The Notebook "The best love is the kind that weakens the soul, that makes us reach for more, that plants fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds and that's what you've given me that's what I hope to give to you forever" and "love means never having to say you're sorry" from the movie Love Story."
Call your wife or your girlfriend "My Precious" and don't forget the accent. Sitting in a plane and the Flight attendant just inquired you "Is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?" Airplane (1980) that will be a nightmare for anyone. If anyone asks you how a husband be supposed to be, just quote one of the lines of Clue (1985) "Husbands should be like Kleenex: soft, strong and disposable".
Make sure to remember the lines that are catchy, you may not realize perhaps one day they'll be popular in the near future. Have fun watching movies! Asta la vista baby!

Why You Might Still Want an Optical Drive

An optical disc drive (ODD) is a disk drive that uses a laser light to read data from or write data to an optical disc. These include CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. It allows you to use CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs to listen to music or watch a movie. Most drives also allow you to write data to a disc, so you can create your own music CDs or create of back-up copy of important data.

The Optical Disc Drive is also known as "optical drive, ODD (abbreviation), CD drive, DVD drive, BD drive, disc drive" and most optical drives can play and/or record onto a large number of different disc formats. And also, the popular optical drive formats include CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, BD-R, BD-R DL & TL, BD-RE, BD-RE DL &TL, and BDXL.

PC manufacturers have good reasons not to include the drives. Unlike CPUs and SSDs, optical drives can’t shrink much and they add bulk to laptops, and nobody wants a bulky laptop. They shouldn’t disappear entirely. We need ways to access older media. And because they’re read-only, CDs and DVDs just might prove in the long run to be an excellent archival format. But that will only be the case if drives remain available.

An optical drive also needs a loading mechanism. Two general types are in use:

• A tray-loading mechanism, where the disc is placed onto a motorized tray, which moves in and out of the computer case.
• A slot-loading mechanism, where the disc is slid into a slot and motorized rollers are used to move the disc in and out.

An optical drives have some advantages are,

• The cost -per-bit of storage for optical disks is very low, because of their low cost and enormous storage density.
• The use of a single spiral track makes optical disks an ideal storage medium for reading large blocks of sequential data, such as music.
• Optical disk drives do not have any mechanical read/write heads to rub against or crash into the disk surface. This makes optical disks a more reliable storage medium than magnetic tapes or magnetic disks.
• Optical disks have a data storage life in excess of 30 years. This makes them a better storage medium for data archiving as compared to magnetic tapes or magnetic disks.
• Since data once stored on an optical disk becomes permanent, the danger of stored data getting inadvertently erased is not there with optical disks.
• Due to their compact size and light weight, optical disks are easy to handle, store, and port from one place to another.
• Music CDs can be played on a computer having a CD-ROM drive along with a sound board and speakers. This allows computer systems to be also used as music systems, whenever desired.

And also for optical drives, some programs, such as VeraCrypt, still require them for emergency boot tools. You still occasionally get music on CDs—as gifts or when you buy them directly from the artist at a concert. And when you do get an audio CD, the first thing you want to do with it is rip it to MP3s.

But what if you want a small, light laptop and an optical drive? Make the drive detachable and also you can buy an external optical drive for less than $40, and use it only when you’re at home.

The other night, I watched the movie "The Family Man" starring Nicholas Cage. I enjoyed it very much, although that's not intended to be my point.

The story takes place in two locations: New Jersey and New York. When Cage's character takes his wife to New York City for dinner, the camera shows a shot of the city's sky line.

Fiction quickly turned to non-fiction.

What a strange, ominous feeling. I was relaxing and suddenly I was reminded of what no longer was -- what was now a ghost. The Twin Towers.

I thought about how they looked so beautiful in the evening sky line of New York City. I thought about the shooting of this film and how back then no one ever would have dreamed that these buildings would be the target for the worst attack in history.

God, life is different now. Isn't it?

I was filled with sadness. I was drawn from the movie and back into thinking about all the lives lost. What I was looking at on the screen was, in fact, no more. It was a ghost.

The ghost of the past. The ghost of security and the ghost of life in America as it was. All innocently captured on film by camera operators who had no thought that this may be the last time they'd ever film these buildings.

There was a scene in the movie where Cage's character takes his wife to the city for dinner because he forgot their wedding anniversary. I recognized the restaurant immediately. It was the one in the Twin Towers. I remember seeing it on the news and watching the interview with the owner. The feeling of overwhelming shock and disbelief came over me again. There were extras, film crew, etc. in that restaurant during the shoot. Never in a million years would they have thought it was the last time they'd be there. The last time they'd ever see it again. They never dreamed it would become the target for a mass murder.

Who would have?

Every day I am seeing how life is different. Examples like the one above clearly demonstrates this.

The next time you catch "An Affair to Remember", or "The Family Man" or any movie shot in New York City, you will be reminded of what was.

You will be reminded of the saddest day in our history and become witness to a ghost.

Valentines Treats that are Good for You

Nowadays we're trying to be healthier than ever. Unfortunately it usually feels like bad timing when holidays like Valentine's Day come around. Let's face it. We all like homemade goodies. They're like our favorite song or movie. We like them and don't mind getting too much of a good thing. So how do you get the goodies without the guilt? It's easier than you think, and tastier too.

Some holidays, like Valentines Day, are just made for cookies, cakes and the best baked goodies we can imagine. Unfortunately, it also comes along six weeks into our New Years weight loss resolution. So how do you have your cake and eat it too? It's easy with a few tricks that temp even the most finicky taste buds.

Most baked goods have a few common ingredients; AKA, the usual suspects. These include types of shortening, oil, eggs, sugar and flour. This is great news for us because each of these has a substitute or alternate that is not only just as tasty, but also often saves us some cash depending on what substitutes we use.

Shortening and Oils: This is typically some sort of fat, butter or margarine, or vegetable/seed oil in the case of oils. For the most part these are just there to make a dry mix moist and add consistency. I like to use butter for it's other healthy properties and taste. However I typically like to use one third less than the recipe calls for and it always works out fine. If you really want to cut it out completely, consider select fruit juices or applesauce. Most cookie and cake mixes will provide substitution information somewhere on the package, explaining what you can use and how much you will need.

Eggs: If you have a recipe calling for more than one egg, it helps if you either replace one-half or more of the eggs with low-fat egg substitute or two egg whites for each egg being replaced. Replacing all the eggs usually cuts into the texture and consistency so leaving one or two is OK. By the way, you're saving 50 to 60 calories, 4 to 6 grams of fat and a lot of cholesterol for each egg you replace with this method.

Sugar: I don't like to drop name brands but Splenda has a pretty good foothold on sugar substitutes available in volume for baking. They also provide substitution tables so you use just the right amount. If you like actual sugar, just go for the natural type.

Flour: Flour itself is not the big problem here; the bleached all purpose white flour that is the problem. Unfortunately substituting all that processed stuff for wheat flour usually alters enough consistency that people notice. That said, I find splitting the difference and substituting half the bleached flour with half what flour does the trick nicely.

That's it. Happy baking!
