I am fairly certain that Britta Wauers In Heaven, Underground may just be the most uplifting movie ever made about a cemetery. Lively (har har), charming, and gorgeously shot, this film details the history of Weiensee, the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. Built in the 1850s in (East) Berlin, it has remained completely intact despite decades of war and chaos, and is in fact one of the few Jewish institutions to be left untouched by the Nazis despite its proximity to the heart of the German capital.

The site itself is one of breathtaking beauty, as thick, lush foliage creates a green canopy over the grounds and camouflages the sometimes crumbling headstones. Wauer brings the grounds to life with detailed and vivid photography that highlights the cemeterys place as both a place of great spiritual and emotional importance, but also as a sort of living thing unto itself. Over the course of the film we come to see Weiensee as more character than place its sprawling grounds reveal personality, history and form of self-propagating resilience that allows the cemetery to in turn grow, change and heal.

This character of the cemetery wraps around the lives and histories of the many people that it touches and houses, as well as those who maintain it. The community of people that coalesce around it are committed to its survival, and also to its well-being. I dont know much about cemeteries in general, but I cant imagine that there are many others that have such a large group of people working so fervently on the restoration of monuments, the continued preservation of plants and animals, and upholding basic integrity of a single cemetery site. Most seem to fall into states of fairly serious neglect their monuments crumbled, their grounds unkempt and ugly. Here we see a genuine community formed around the spirit of Weiensee, an important cultural and emotional institution with a long history of service and community engagement.

Shifting from archival footage and vintage photographs to interviews with the various employees, volunteers and families that make up the Weiensee community, In Heaven, Underground is a subtle but touching portrait of a space that both evolves and remains timeless. Almost like a sort of bubble within a hectic city, Weiensee seems to act independently of its surroundings, growing and changing constantly, in its own self-contained way. Its history keeps it grounded while its spirit keeps it moving. The film is testament to the power of its character and is a fascinating study in the relationships that people develop with spaces. Interviews reveal powerful attachments to Weiensee ranging from troubled and tragic, to sentimental and joyful. Of course, with over 150 years and over 100,000 graves, the surface is merely scratched over the course of the film, however, the perspectives that we are presented serve to pique our curiosity and heighten the mystique of the place. That there is so much more happening here that is unseen only furthers the cemeterys character.

Of course, it is Wauers thoughtful direction and the salt-of-the-earth charm of her subjects that make this film so watchable. From a wisecracking old rabbi to a deeply reverent Gentile security guard, In Heaven, Underground is bursting with countless little narratives that wrap themselves around the larger story of a space that persists.

Yesterday, my husband and I saw the movie The Last Samurai. Usually I dont watch movies with a lot of violence, because it makes me uncomfortable. But my interest was piqued when I saw an interview with Tom Cruise, who was curiously unable to express the personal effect this movie had on his own life. It had clearly been an experience that had deeply effected him. To see him, usually so articulate, stumble for words made me want to go see the movie.

I wont be describing the story; thats not what this article is about. But there was something really impressive about it that I want to share with you. The movie portrayed the way of the Samurai, the Japanese warriors of old times. Tom Cruises character, an army captain captured by the Samurai, describes the concept of mindfulness of the Japanese people: when something is being done, it is done to perfection. He is amazed by their discipline and the focus they have on whatever task they are doing. Each action they take is based on this spiritual foundation of mindfulness.

In one scene the captain is practicing his fighting skills with a warrior. Tom is loosing time and again. Suddenly one of the watching warriors tells him: Too many minds! With this the warrior addresses the fact that Toms attention is diverted to many different thoughts: hes focusing on the watchers, on the warrior and on himself, which makes him lose. The sentence No mind! brings the captain fully into the present moment, which ultimately allows him to finish the fight in a draw instead of defeat.

In our western culture we often act from a different perspective. We feel that the more we multitask the more we are able to achieve and this makes us a better person. Its almost like we have to defend our right to exist by how much we accomplish! But one of my clients illustrates how we often dilute our own ability to fully live life. Josie had contacted me about a change in her career that she had wanted for a long time. She wanted to become more successful in her business. However, during our sessions she constantly came up against blocks that prevented her from taking the actions that we planned out. She told me how she often felt overwhelmed by all the things in her life. She had many unfinished projects around her house, which kept occupying space in her mind as well. And because she was constantly aware of them, she kept beating herself up about not finishing them. I feel like I never get anything accomplished. It totally drags me down and when I see everything that needs to be done, its just too much and I shut down!

I noticed the vicious cycle that her mind was in by how she described her problem. Her thoughts went from I should be doing this- I know I need to do this- but I have so many things to finish- I never finish anything- Im a failure. There was clearly old tape running in her mind. Most of us have this old tape running in the background of our thinking: its an old message we decided on a long time ago and now its an automatic cycle that keeps playing over and over.

Luckily, there are several ways to diminish this old tape. One of them is to become Fully Present. In Eckhart Tolles book The Power of NOW he describes Presence as being Here, Now. When you are fully here, now, your mind stops running its tape. In its place there is a deep and peaceful silence. Our mind is a useful tool for gathering information and designing strategies, but in our lives we usually are too identified with what we think. Most anxious feelings are started because we think too much. We worry, which is a thought based on either our past or our future. This takes us out of the present moment. Anxiousness doesnt have a space in the present.

Together, Josie and I started integrating some exercises into her life. Meditation was one of them, but Josie only had very limited time available. There had to be practices she could integrate during her normal daily activities. She finally settled for two specific ways. She stopped multitasking! In an interview Maya Angelou describes how multitasking doesnt really serve us. She was cleaning vegetables and watching her granddaughter play, when she suddenly cut her finger. Because she was doing two things at the same time, her attention wasnt fully focused on what she was doing and the result was that she damaged herself physically. To become present, she put both hands under the faucet and put all her attention to the one thing she was now doing. She fully enjoyed the feel of running water over her skin and with that she was fully present. Josie took this example to heart and made the commitment to really focus on what she does, one thing at a time.

The other way that Josie uses to become fully present is from Eckhart Tolles book Stillness Speaks. He gives the example to look at a tree and simply observe it standing. You dont have to describe it, just look. The tree doesnt do anything, its not taking action or trying to reach a goal or pretend that its something it is not. A tree just is. And when you observe it, you connect with that same stillness of being present. Another client told me about her experience. She said being present not only relieves tension, its much more personal than that. Being fully present, to me, is a very personal peaceful and calming experience. For myself, being fully present is an incredibly intimate and vulnerable experience, but without the fear of getting hurt. Fear is mostly about perceiving painful possibilities, which are projected in the future. Therefore, when you are feeling fearful, you are not being present.

Josie started using these techniques, including some other ones as well. She reported back to me a couple of weeks later. She felt more peaceful and more in control of her life. Over the next few months she got very good at stopping that running old tape. This enabled her to focus on the projects that had been waiting for her, one by one. It allowed her to see results, which ultimately made her feel much better about herself!

Now I am challenging you to observe your thoughts this week. Simply notice how often your mind drifts off again and again! No more multitasking; you are then diverting your attention, which makes you really not as efficient in living as you think you are. Just pull your attention back to what you are doing at that moment. Because, whenever you notice youre not present, in that moment you are present. Amazing how that is!

Ramki (Allari Naresh) and Lucky (Karthika) are twins who differ in every aspect. So Ramki is a fun loving simple person, his sister is a dare devil and tom boy nature. One day Ramki falls in love with his colleague Shruthi (Monal Gajjar) and revel about his case to his parents.
Ramki's father put a condition that if his sister gets married, he can not tie the knot. An impotent Ramki starts searching married, but her sister keeps dropping these games. Meanwhile, Lucky also revealed she likes an IAS officer (Harshvardhan Rane) and marry her at any cost. Twist in the tale arises when Ramki discovers that his brother would be entitled is getting married to someone else.Ramki is going to do now? How he married his sister? What happens to his love life? For answers to all these questions, you need to watch the movie on the big screen.

Plus Points: -

The angle between comedy and Naresh Karthika is quite new and came out well. Every scene and situation comedy that has been designed around them works well. Again, Allari Naresh proves he is a master of comedy films. He plays his role with the utmost sincerity, and even allows Karthika to dominate whenever the script requirements. Karthika is a wise choice for this film and its role supremely well. She is good with his dances and perfectly into the plot.
The entire first half is entertaining and is nicely set up for the second. Comedy, romance and fun elements during this period were executed brilliantly. Vennela Kishore is very good that the boss funny and plays its role. Srinivas Reddy and his group argue cleverly Naresh and make hilarious comedy punches throughout the film.

MinusPoints: -

With this film, he is once again proven that Tollyood makers like lots of formulas security zone. After the establishment of the first half quite interesting, the second half was routine drama and comedy that you see in almost all movies these days. History is moving to a small town, the entrance and false identities comedy Brahmanandam, here's what you get to see even in this film too.Climax of the film is cleashed and simply rushed on us. Monal Gajjar heroine has nothing to do in the film, and so is Harshvardhn Rane. Ali comes a few laughs, but disappears after a while. Some how the role of Brahmanandam Kona Venkat does not click this time. All his scenes are bland and just as in his previous films.

Technical aspects:-

With the budget that the film is done, until all looks good. Production values are decent and presenting the film beautifully. Camerawork is routine and does not take anything special. Dialogues need a special mention as they were written brilliantly. One liners are hilarious and those written for the acolytes of Naresh are very good. Music of the film is almost OK, all the songs have been shot decently.Director Chinni Krishna has done justice to the story for most films. He maintained the tempo throughout the first half, but wobbles slightly in the second. It is not the script or direction is wrong here, but it is the overall experience during the second half which is terribly routine and obsolete.

Verdict:-

Overall, the brother of Bommali has the right combination of interesting story and a funny comedy. Complete first half, Naresh Karthika and performance are huge positives. On the other hand, if you do not mind seeing the same old routine Brahmanandam comedy and foreseeable scenario, you can watch this movie safely and you will not be disappointed.

It's a Twister Dorothy!That's what they said towards the beginning of the classic movie, " The Wizard of Oz". Then, of course, all of the family ran for cover in the storm cellar, after they released the livestock and horses. Dorothy, didn't make it to the shelter that afternoon, and Auntie Em was really worried.Well, I am right there with Auntie Em. The only difference is that the "twister" I am worried about is the effect baby boomers are going to have on the two pillars of security that we call Medicare and Social Security. Now, that particular twister is going to do a lot more damage than the one in the movie. In the movie, little Dorothy's house was pulled off it's foundation, and dropped on the wicked witch all in one piece. The damage was minimal. At the end of the movie, Dorothy had a small lump on her head, but was otherwise un-harmed. All in all, there was a happy ending.The Baby Boom "twister" is real, and it is coming, and we had better start to get prepared. Especially since we are being forewarned once again. The Social Security program, along with Medicare have, once again, been "reviewed" by their respective "Trustees" to determine how soon they will be insolvent. It would appear that Medicare will become insolvent around 2019, and Social Security will be broke sometime around 2041. As a "card carrying member" of the Baby Boom generation, Medicare will be toast about seven years before I would be eligible for benefits. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to keep paying in to it knowing all of this.The Social Security Program, however; appears to have a little longer life span than Medicare. It wasn't too long ago the date was predicted to be sometime in 2032. So, I guess I should be happy about that tidbit of good news, given the way Medicare is working out for me. No matter how you look at it though, the message is pretty clear if you simply read between the lines. For those of you who don't, please allow me to decipher for you:The message is: Don't Count On Us.Just like Dorthy discovered, the Great Wizard (the government) cannot really magically provide a heart for the Tin Man, or a brain for the Scarecrow, nor can he provide whatever actually puts the "hot" in Hottentot, otherwise known as Courage. In fact, the Wizard pretty much told Dorothy and her companions that the very things they sought to obtain were already in their possession. They needed only to realize it and to believe it.Our government is, once again, telling us that we need to fend for ourselves because there is a storm coming, and we would be wise to get prepared if we hope to make it through. Not in so many words of course, but that's about it in a nutshell.For me, that means we need to save our own money, become debt free as fast as possible, and be self sufficient. You know, all the things your Auntie Em ( your parents and Grandparents)probably told you were smart things to do with your money. So, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! It is only me. But, if there really was a "wizard" , I suppose we would learn what we really already know; that the average American family can be come debt free without hurting their budget. Furthermore and henceforth, from this day forward, they shall have the power to do so, if they realize that they cannot plan for their future while they are so busy paying for their past.How much money you make is not as important as; how much of what you make will you actually keep? Getting out of debt is, without question, the single most important financial decision you must make in today's world. Maybe, we should listen to Auntie Em and not depend on Uncle Sam, especially if we want our story to have a happy ending?

Attacks On Traditional Values Are Not Selling At The Box Office

I have always believed in the right of free expression. People should be able to express an opinion without being punished for it. The exceptions to that rule are using an opinion to defame without cause, slander someone or attack their ethnicity. That goes far beyond the fair expression of an opinion. Could the current slump in movie ticket sales be the result of Hollywood's war against traditional values? Have liberal actors gone too far in their political expressions to remain marketable?

Many of this years films feature some of Hollywoods most liberal and outspoken actors. Most of the plots, it can be argued, have a decidedly liberal and even anti-conservative slant. It may be that liberals were encouraged with the financial success of Michael Moores film, Fahrenheit 9/11. However, that was during an election year when people were hungry to hear both sides of the issue. That hunger, it seems, has subsided.

Can be it that the liberals in Hollywood have become so philosophically disconnected from the average American that they no longer care about what their audiences really want to see? Almost every film released features characters that are divorced, separated or single with children. Traditional mothers, fathers and couples are portrayed as bored, worn out, soulless people who live meaningless lives. Todays villains are the CEOs of greedy corporations. Didnt anyone in Tinsel Town notice the popularity of The Apprentice?

I have been on this Earth for forty some years. During that time, many things have changed. The one thing that has not is that people go to the movies to escape. They dont want their superheroes trying to teach them a series of liberal social values. They do not want The Godfather trying to save the whales. They dont want every coming of age film to automatically include a gay or lesbian character. They want to be entertained. When films become dreary morality lessons and cease to entertain, people stop going to the movies.

With America going in a decidedly conservative direction, it does not seem unreasonable to ask for more films where people who dont leave, get a sex change operation or reveal they are gay get some credit. There are a lot of moms and dads out there working very hard to keep their family together. Many of them do not see their lives are empty, wasted or meaningless. Not all teenagers are joyriding, smoking pot or having relations with everything that moves. Some actually have some respect for themselves and know better.

There was a time when many Americans allowed Hollywood liberals to tell them how to think. They made the films and we were expected to simply show up at theaters because entertainment choices were limited. Thats no longer the case. With a zillion cable channels, an ever-growing volume of independent conservative films and portable media that fits in our pocket, we can now select our own entertainment.

One would have thought that this years lackluster ratings for The Academy Awards television broadcast would have sent a strong message to liberal filmmakers. With the vast majority of nominations having gone to dreary films that extol the perceived benefits of a liberal utopia, millions of viewers tuned out. They just didnt watch. Now, it seems, the same thing is happening at the box office. People arent watching by the millions. Those who do cant stomach the morality lessons enough for a second viewing.

Apart from liberal themes, there are the liberal actors. Sean Penn recently traveled to Iran to observe and report on the elections there for a major American Newspaper. One wonders why? Perhaps he hoped to find another dictatorial utopia for America to leave alone? He and many of his liberal friends seemed to feel that Saddam Hussein had created some sort of socialist Muslim heaven on earth that America had no right to disturb.

Liberal actors, musicians and artists all joined together in the past couple of years for what they were sure would be a successful effort to prevent the War with Iraq and keep President Bush from serving a second term. Most were devastated when these efforts failed miserably. Perhaps they felt that what they were doing was akin to the Hollywood Canteen and War Bond drives of World War II fame? If thats the case, they were wrong.

Bad mouthing the President and trashing our troops is not the way to win the hearts and minds of most Americans. Holding tyrannical dictators like Castro and Saddam up as socialist miracle workers is crazy. Creating entertainments that trash values held dear by any faction of Americans is wrong, counter productive and irritating. People dont go to the movies to be irritated.

What will it all come to? King Kong gets a non-traditional marriage to Godzilla and adopts Mothra who saves the whales from Republican Fishermen? Liberals have every right to share their vision of what America should be. Its no crime and never should be for them to express their frustration at prejudice faced by those living in non-traditional situations. Its also just as fair for those who beg to differ with their views to avoid entertainment venues that extol liberal values.
