Dinner for Schmucks has raised eyebrows for its seeminglyderogatory movie title. But this film about humiliation is not as offensive asit could have been. The credit goes to its two stars, Steve Carell and PaulRudd. Watch Dinner for Schmucks online for free and see a very funny movie.

Paul Rudd plays Tim, an ambitious junior analyst at a Beverly Hills equityfirm. Hes a decent guy with a cute art-dealer girlfriend named Julie (playedby Stephanie Szostak) who is living beyond his means. Desperate for a promotionto impress Julie, he suddenly finds himself in a position to get one.

Tims elitist boss, Lance Fender (played perfectly by BruceGreenwood), has noticed Tim and invites him to the monthly executive dinnerparty being held at his mansion. This could be Tims ticket up the corporateladder. But during the invite, Fender explains further that each guest mustbring along the dumbest, most inept person they can find. The person whoattends with the biggest doofus wins the game and the bosss favor.

Tim realizes that the game is nothing more than a bunch ofpompous asses humiliating some poor sap just for kicks. But he figures that ifhe goes along he will become a member of the bosss inner circle and reap allthe rewards that come with that. He also hopes that by showing his girlfriendhow successful hes becoming that he will finally be able to convince her tomarry him.

Not sure if he wants play this distasteful game, his destinyis set when he almost runs down Barry Speck (played by Steve Carell), a tax manand amateur taxidermist who likes to dress up dead mice in little clothes andpose them into scenes from his life. Barry wears a mangy, Moe Howardhairpiece, has spectacles and buckteeth and looks like the perfect Schmuck. Barryaccepts Tims invitation to the dinner party (per the rules, the idiot cannotknow why they are being brought) and the game is on.

Now the title of this movie is somewhat misleading becausethe actual dinner occurs at the very end. A more accurate title would have beenWhat Happens Leading up to a Dinner for Schmucks, because the majority ofthis film occurs between the time Tim meets Barry and the dinner event. Barryinterprets the dinner invitation as an offer of friendship, and since he has noother friends he begins stalking his new best friend Tim.

Barry follows Tim around and then eventually home as he triesto inject himself into his life, inadvertently destroying every ounce of Timwith his buffoonery. Tim has to endure a series of ever-escalating incidentsincluding a severely injured back, a fractured romance, a reunion with a stalking,hypersexual ex-girlfriend looking for revenge (played hilariously by LucyPunch) and an IRS audit from hell.

Its almost too bad that this part of the movie is so damnfunny because the dinner finale just cant compete. Thats not to say theending is bad, but by that point the film is interested in getting its moralmessage across more than being funny.

Paul Rudd is excellent as the mostly moral guy who is justtrying to stay ahead and get the girl. His patient, slow burn as he watches hisonce promising life fall apart due to the mishaps of Barry is classic.

Steve Carell proves again that there is no role he cant do.He handles the slapstick and tender moments with equal ease. I have to figurethat the director needed many takes of some scenes due to everyone laughing onthe set. One example being when Barry sings the John Lennon classic Imaginebut gets the words wrong (You may say that Im a dreamer, but Im not).Funny.

There is no way you wont laugh all through this movie!
