It should be no surprise that there are lots of theater andarts attractions in Carson, as it is located insuch proximity to Hollywood,the land of the stars. From musicals and fine arts to movie theaters andplayhouses, the Carsonarea has a lot to offer.
Located right in the center of Carson,is the Dominguez HillArt Gallerylocated on the campus of California State Universityon East Victoria Street.This huge gallery displays the art work created by seniors of the schools artprogram. The collection exhibited changes a few times during the year as a newclass graduates. There are also lectures given throughout the year as well asother art related events.
For those more interested in art history, you will want tovisit the International Printing Museumlocated on Torrance Boulevard.This unique museum features one of the largest exhibits of historical printingequipment and other pieces of historic book arts.
A few minutes from the International Printing Museumis the Torrance CulturalCenter located in Torrance, Californiaon Civic Center Drive.This huge arts center features a theater for performing arts that seats 502guests. There are also a few art studios and a beautiful, authentic Japanesestyle garden. Also in Torrance is the Torrance Art Museum,just down Civic Center Drivefrom the Torrance Cultural Center.This museum features permanent and traveling exhibits as well as lecturesthroughout the year. You might want to check out their calendar before planningyour trip if you want to catch a lecture you find of interest. Also in Torrance, on Albalone Avenue, you will find the Chen Art Gallery, a unique art gallery thatfeatures a large personal collection of Chinese art. The collection, whichbelongs to Dr. Tei Fu Chen, includes paintings and historic artifacts from theQing and Ming imperial palaces and the Neolithic Era as well.
A short 15 minute drive just southeast of the city of Carson will bring you to the Museumof Latin American Arts in Long Beach. Thishard-to-miss museum is located on Alamitos Avenue. Its large, unique architecture welcomesyou to browse through the Latin American inspired paintings and other works ofart. A large majority of the pieces on display in the Museumof Latin American Arts were created bylocals of the Southern California area andexude a rich cultural symbolism of their influence on the culture of the area.
Theater lovers will want to make a trip to the El SegundoPlayhouse, which is located in El Segundo on Main Street. The theater, which seats 850guests is a non-profit theater that puts on production of plays like Harvey,Emma and To Kill a Mockingbird, just to name a few. This is also the venuewhere the Civic Light Opera of South Bay performs. Tickets for productions andevents here generally range from $30 to $60.
Back in Long Beach,there are a few other playhouses to check out, including the Long Beach Playhouse.This theater features two different theaters, both of which have very intimatesettings where you can enjoy local productions of plays and musicals as well asconcerts. Ticket prices are quite affordable for events at the Long BeachPlayhouse, ranging from $12 to $27. While in Long Beach, you might also want to check outa performance by The Long Beach Opera, which has completed an amazing 28seasons. Past productions have included Powder Her Face, King Roger and Deathin Venice. Ifyoure a fan of Shakespearean productions check the calendar for the Long BeachShakespeare Company as they host several Shakespearean festivals throughout theyear.
Of course, the meccafor actors looking for their big break is Los Angeles,which is just a short 25 minute drive north of Carson. There are lots and lots of dinnertheaters, playhouses and concert venues. It is well-known that many famousactors have gotten their start in some of these playhouses, and it is also truethat some big name actors still like to perform in them every once in a while.
If youre just looking to catch one of the latest flicks,there are two movie theaters in the Carson area;the AMC Del Amo 18 located on West Carson Street, the AMC Rolling Hills 20 in Torrance.
